Another week of the 2007 season is now in the books at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway (CMS). All total, there were 94 cars on hand competing in the modifieds, late models, street stocks and b-modified divisions. Local race fans from CMS and all over the country have come to know that Saturday night racing is reserved for the deep pool of local drivers to thrill the crowds and display their driving prowess. Hometown racetracks don’t have to buy over their fans with long and drawn out glitzy pre-race ceremonies, on-stage driver introductions with cheesy fireworks, or fly-by-night trend-of-the-week fans. On Saturday nights all over the U.S. area drivers let their talents do the talking and have done so for decades for grass-roots race fans. Saturday night at CMS was no exception to this rule as there were a total of 21 thrilling and hard-fought races competed on the high-banked track on a cool and clear night for KMMO FM 102.9 Radio Race night!

With arguably the strongest field of modifieds competing on a weekly basis in the Greater Kansas City area, the drivers on hand did not disappoint as Basehor, Kansas driver Tim Karrick returned to CMS victory lane for the first time since 2004! Karrick, one of the most recognizable names in area modified racing held a stellar field at bay to the claim the win and the weekly $1,000 first-place check from promoters Earl and Susan Walls. With 33 modifieds on hand, five heat races and one b-main took to the track in order to sort out the feature event starting lineup. Early evening heat race winners included Dean Wille, Aaron Marrant, Karrick, Dave Meyer and Jim Moody; Jesse Wheeler claimed the b-main. Only the top four from the heats and b-main transferred into the main event. Marrant and Wille paced the field at the start of the feature with Marrant taking charge of the field early in the race. A lap four pileup on the front stretch coming off of turn four bunched the field as Marrant led Wille and Karrick to the line for the restart. By lap five, Karrick made his way around Wille for second with Marrant leading as tight racing ensued for nearly every position. Another incident on lap seven in turn one again regrouped the field as leader Marrant began to feel the pressure from Karrick on the ensuing restarts. By lap nine, Karrick challenged for the lead and got it at the line from Marrant. Meanwhile, a little further back Terry Schultz was battling with Lyle for the sixth position as he continued to gain ground from his ninth starting position. As laps wound down Karrick began to pull away from the field but Marrant was determined not to let him too far out of his sights with Wille close behind. As the white flag was shown for one lap to go, Karrick held his line and was able to hold of Marrant and Wille at the line in his McCarthy Auto Group, Morse Chevrolet, Danny’s Bar & Grill, Hamilton Service Company, Engine by Dennis Millert, Skyrocket Chassis modified. Meyer looked strong all night in his ride and finished fourth with Schultz taking fifth, Lyle brought his car home in sixth.

A stellar field of 18 late model drivers was on hand in preparation for next week’s ULMA Duel Showdown. The full-bodied cars took to the track for 3 heat races, with Jon Binning, Brett Rollert and Steven Clancy grabbing the wins. In the 15-lap feature event Binning and Rollert led the field to turn one with Clancy and Chad Frewaldt and the rest of the field in tow. The drivers gave the fans one of the best races this year with a caution-free, 15-lap ultra fast main event. For several laps Binning and Rollert battled side-by-side for the lead with Binning on the low side and Rollert up high. After actually getting on his roof in a different car the night before at another track, Rollert was looking to regain some momentum heading into next weekend’s ULMA Duel Showdown. Once Rollert cleared the Binning machine there was no stopping him as he cruised to his second CMS feature win of the year ahead of a hard-charging Chad Frewaldt, who had made his way around Binning for second late in the event. Binning held on for third and was followed to the line by Clancy, Bob King and a smooth-running David Angell in sixth. The Memorial Weekend Duel Showdown night two is set for next weekend for the late models. Night one begins at Valley Speedway on Friday and concludes at CMS on Saturday. ULMA member drivers will be competing for bonus money put up by the ULMA and to see who comes away from the weekend being crowned the Duel Showdown Champion.

The Street Stocks never disappoint at CMS and once again the talent-field roster of competitors treated the fans to some outstanding racing action in 3 heat races and a 15-lap feature event. In the fast-paced heat races Ray Smith, Nathan Himes and Chad Eickleberry found their way to the winner’s circle as the heat race finishes determined the starting lineup for the feature event. The 17-car field was led into turn one by a determined Nathan Himes, who was looking for his second feature win in a row. However, Ray Smith had other plans as he dogged Himes for the first eight laps of the event until succumbing to mechanical issues while battling for the lead. On lap ten Brian Johnson, already a two-time winner heading into the night, had made a charge from his sixth starting position and made the pass for the lead and never looked back as he cruised on to his third feature win in 2007. Himes was able to hold off a charging Anthony Ward in third, followed by Brett Nail, Tammy Korff and Dale Atkinson to round out the top six.

With another large field of b-modifieds on hand it took no less than 4 heat races and one b-main to complete the starting field for the 15-lap feature event. Early heat race winners were Jeremiah Stephens, Chad Lebsock, Michael Mullins and Bubba Kline. For the 15-lap, 20-car feature event Stephens was supposed to start on the pole position but did not get his car to the staging area in time. Although he was able to join the field after a false start, Stephens had problems later in the event and was relegated to a 17th place finish. Scotty Martin was looking for his fourth win in a row but it was not to be as mechanical woes also sidelined him and any plans for another win. From the get go, Lebsock let it be known that his car was the one to beat. Jake Newman ran strong and made a pass for second place on lap 12 of the event and even led a lap before Lebsock regained the lead. Meanwhile, Tyler Lewis was lurking just behind the leaders and had moved his way into third by lap 13. Despite doing all he could to get around, Newman had to settle for second behind Lebsock. Finishing third was Lewis ahead of fourth-place runner Mullins. Bubba Kline brought his machine home in fifth and Ethan Isaacs rounded out the top six.
