The weather cooled down after Friday evening rains in the Warensburg area, but the racing action was hot and furious in several features at Central Missouri Speedway on Saturday night. Tim Karrick, Modifieds and Brain Johnson, Street Stocks continued their recent success. For the Late Models, Fred King and in the B- Modified event Brian Ziegler found victory lane during their features on Freedom Fun Night. Patriotic race fans and many drivers were more than generous with their donations of kid’s clothing, shoes and various toys for the Freedom Fun event. These items will be boxed later date and shipped overseas to support our military members. There were 90 cars registered for races in the pits that competed in four divisions during the pleasant weather after dealing with the hot and humid conditions the past few weekends.

The modified drivers used the races on Saturday night as their final tune-up for their September 1st $2,000 to win special event. The ‘Mighty’ Modified feature was another barn burner with twenty nine drivers checked into the pits for four competitive heat races. Last season’s track champion Aaron Marrant claimed his third heat race of the 2007 season as he bested Tom Charles and James McMillin in heat number one. Clinton’s Dennis Walrath steered his way to the win in heat two ahead of veteran driver Gene Claxton and Donnie Danner. Chad Lyle tallied the win in heat three ahead of Terry Schultz and Kyle Westerhold. The hot driver from Basehor Kansas, Tim Karrick triumphed in heat four over Jake Richards and Jason Bodenhamer. Promoter Earl Walls decided to field all twenty eight cars that were able to make the start for the feature event in the leading division at CMS. Marrant and Walrath led the field to green flag to get the 20-lap feature in motion. Marrant led early after several re-starts following a lap one yellow flag for cars leaving the tacky driving surface. Marrant hung on to the lead until lap seven when Karrick passed him on the low side and Karrick never relinquished the lead. Walrath, Lyle and Charles were attempting to gain positions as quick as possible behind Karrick. About this time Bodenhamer started to move up through the field from his twelfth place starting position into the top five. On lap eleven several drivers departed the track with mechanical problems including the point’s leader Joe Walker and Terry Shultz, the driver chasing just behind him in the points battle. A caution on lap seventeen once again regrouped the field after Dean Wille departed the racing surface. Karrick continued leading without a strong challenge from the final restart until the checkers flew and finished with his fourth CMS feature win of the year. Dennis Walrath finished strong in second place with Lyle protecting the third spot ahead the hard-charging Bodenhammer in fourth and Charles in fifth.

Fans were rewarded with another action packed night of Late Model racing. For the eighteen drivers signed into the pits, the evening was topped off with a 15-lap United Late Model Association (ULMA) feature event. The Late Models have come on strong towards the end of season with some great action on the track. There were three heat races for the eighteen cars on hand and in heat number one Fred King raced ahead of the pack and nailed his third heat race victory of the year over Steven Clancy and Tommy Cordray. Jon Binning maneuvered his car into victory lane in heat race two ahead of current ULMA point’s leader Brett Rollert in second with Kevin Coyne finishing third. In the third heat race Bob King guided his machine to the victory with his tenth heat race win of the year with David Angell and Brett Wood just behind. Fred King jumped out to the early lead with Binning, Clancy, Rollert and Bob King battling for the second through fifth spots with action on the high and low side of the track. Jason Estes broke his machine and was done for the night on lap four around turn one after some contact on the previous lap with Ed Griggs. Then Brett Rollert used the high side with Clancy and now David Angell on the low side working hard for positions in the top five. After a lap twelve yellow for debris on the track, Fred King held on to his lead to the end of race and crossed the finish line with the checkers flying to conquer the race with his second CMS feature victory this season. Binning secured second with Rollert in third after a late race pass around Clancy who finished fourth and David Angell with a solid top five finish.

It took three heat races to assemble the eighteen-car starting field for the street stock main event. Brain Johnson garnered his eighth heat victory this year in the first heat race ahead of Adam Bush and Herb Danner. John Miller held steady in heat race two to collect his first heat race of the year over Jeff Lazenby and Dale Adkinson. In the third heat Brett Nail took the checkers for his second heat win with Nick Bennet second and Scotty Dukes third. Johnson and Miller led the field into turn and from the beginning it was Johnson who shot into the lead ahead Miller, Nail and Lazenby. Chad Eicklenerry had to start in the Danny Iams fifty one car to gain some valuable points after some problems with his car in the second heat race, but drove into the pits on lap two. Johnson seemed to be in control early on, but Nail started to make some headway and was even slightly ahead of Johnson on lap eight. After a late race caution Nail tried several times to pass Johnson on low side and was side by side with him at the finish, but Johnson held on for his tenth feature win this year. Nail had his best run recently with a strong second place finish with Miller taking third ahead of Lazenby in fourth and Bennet fifth. Adkinson appeared to finish in fourth, but was disqualified during the tech inspection. The Street Stock feature was also delayed during the feature for about 25 minutes due to a power interruption.

The B-modifieds had another sturdy field of cars in the pits with twenty five drivers signed in for three qualifying heat races to position the line-up for the 15-lap feature event. C. J. Lyle grabbed the checkered flag in heat race one for this fourth this season ahead of Mark Evinger and Steve Evans. Point’s leader Scotty Martin captured heat two over Brain Ziegler and Gary Lewis with Cliff Owens taking heat three for his first heat race win over Michael Mullins and Dean Wille driving Chad Eickleberry’s car. Lyle and Martin led the field to the opening lap with Martin lurching into the lead. Lyle battled Martin until his engine let go on lap three with Evinger, Owens and Ziegler working over each other for positions up front in the top five. Joshua Jacobs and Jeremy Lile departed the track with mechanical problems on lap three. Martin then started to walk away from the field even when he encountered lapped traffic on lap ten. Martin encountered his own problem with a tire going flat around lap seventeen. Ziegler then moved up and closed in for the top spot. He finally passed him on the final lap for his second feature win which the thrilled the crowd. Martin had actually received a mechanical flag late in the race and was scored in thirteenth place because of the flat tire. As a result, Evinger moved into a second place finish with Wille moving up into a solid third place finish with Bobby Raybourn in fourth from a thirteenth place starting position. Owens was in fifth and completed the top five with a strong finish.

If this week’s racing action is any indication of the features for next Saturday night then you do not want to miss the third and final modified special $2,000 to win 40 lap event along with the ULMA Late Models, Street Stocks and B- Modifieds. Modified drivers are reminded they will have to pay a $100 entry fee, if they have not raced at least twice at CMS this year in the modified division for the special feature. The pit and admission gates open at 5 with hotlaps on the track at 7 and racing underway at 7:30.
