Every racer has to go through a weekend in which no one would like to admit. This past Saturday at Toyota Speedway, 18-year old Kendell Lopez did just that. She started out the weekend with the usual practice laps on the day before the event and the track temperature was giving the High Point Racing Rent Your Ride #59 a few issues. With the track temperatures over 135°, it was very greasy and hard to nail down. The crew of the Tim Huddleston owned #59 adjusted the car to compensate for the high track temperature, but for the second time out the car was just a bit tight.<o>

“When the track got so hot, it just makes the car so loose,” explains Kendell. “We tried a few different things with the car to compensate and make things better, but we knew at the time of the green flag on Saturday that we would be good.”<o></o>
<o></o>
The team knew that the track would cool down come race time so they put the car back to original race trim and was ready for the Saturday event. <o></o><o></o>

As Saturday rolled around, the track did what was expected and left a good car for Kendell in her qualifying attempt. Young Lopez was able to set a fifth quick time in the High Point Racing Rent Your Ride #59.<o></o>

Kendell took off from the grid and on to the racetrack to make the pace laps, but before the drop of the green, a request came over Kendell’s earpiece from crew chief Catlin Leval to stop and get out of the car. The car was missing a critical component, the gas cap. As Kendell pulled out of the grid, fuel began spewing out of the filler tube and spilling on the track surface in which allowed a fire to start. Kendell quickly pulled down to the apron and got out of the car as the fire officials were there putting out the flames. <o></o>
<o></o>
The officials kept the race going as the High Point Racing Rent Your Ride machine was being pushed back to the pit wall and once the gas cap was installed, Kendell went back out on the racetrack nearly a ½ a lap back from the field of the Langers S2 Sportsman’s.<o></o>
<o></o>
Lopez was now nine laps down, which is never a good way to start a race, but she put the hammer down and was able to catch the field to pass one car before the checkered flag waived. <o>

“I felt very good going into this weekend,” says Lopez. “It felt like I had to wait forever to get back in the seat again after the 3-week split between races, but once I got back I felt better than ever and I want to do everything I can to make a solid attempt at winning this championship! It was very disappointing having the troubles that we did, but all in all I learn something new every week and I cannot take anything away from that experience.”<o>

Kendell sits fourth in the points chase only 18 points from leader, Randel King. With this only being the second points race in the Langer Juice S2 series, that leaves six races left for Kendell to climb her way up to the top.<o></o><o></o>

One would think that a disappointment like this past weekend would tarnish the spirits of a young rookie, but not Kendell. After this past weekend, she is more determined than ever to put her High Point Racing Rent Your Ride #59 in victory lane. With her complete focus and desire to win, that number one spot will soon come for the young Independence, Missouri native.<o></o>
