KNOXVILLE, IA (July 4) – Steve Kinser appeared to have lost the lead in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ Independence Day Preliminary Feature of the NAPA Classic at Knoxville Raceway Friday but, with a little stroke of luck, held on to beat Danny Lasoski.

Lasoski, who leads the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series point standings, passed “The King of the Outlaws” between the first and second corners early in the 18th lap. “The Dude” slid in front of Kinser, forcing him to hit the brakes and jump the cushion in turn two. As Kinser regained control of his #11 Quaker State Maxim, he collided with Lasoski’s nephew, Brian Brown. Brown spun, bringing out the caution flag and nullifying Lasoski’s pass. Kinser, who led all 25 laps, beat “The Dude” under the checkered flag by .7 seconds.

“That caution there gave me back the race,” Kinser said. “I just lost it there; I got up into the loose stuff. Maybe we had a little bit of a wrong gear in there, and if I got bogged down in the cushion it was tough to get it to take back off, but Danny’s nephew gave me the race. This (Hulk) car’s been running really good since we brought it out last weekend.

“It looks like it’s going to be Danny (in the points race) pretty much the rest of the way. We’ve pretty much got things going the way we want them, and it’s tough to really make any big changes during the season. That’s what the winter’s for.”

Kinser, the 12th-fastest qualifier in the 53-car field, won every race he entered – the Fourth Heat Race, the First Dash Race and the Preliminary Feature. His 17th Dash Race victory of the season gave him the privilege of starting the Preliminary Feature on the pole. The defending and 17-time time O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series champion has won five Preliminary Features this year. He is 17 points behind Lasoski in their battle for the points lead.

“The King of the Outlaws” burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the evening’s main event. Jason Meyers used a slide move in the fourth corner to pass front row starter Ricky Logan for second place late in the opening lap. Lasoski, who started inside the third row, passed Logan for third half a lap later.

The leaders who approaching lapped traffic midway through the fourth lap when Johnny Herrera stopped NASCAR Winston Cup crew chief Billy Wilburn’s #2W Heintz Brothers Maxim on the back straightaway with fuel nozzle problems.

Lasoski, who swept the feature races during Knoxville’s Sprint Classic in April, drove NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle to the lowest point in the second corner to pass Meyers for second place two laps after the race resumed.

Kinser was .6 seconds ahead of “The Dude” when he entered lapped traffic eight laps into the race. “The King of the Outlaws” opened a 1.1-second advantage within three laps, only to have Lasoski narrow the gap to .2 seconds by lap 14.

“The Dude” raced wheel-to-wheel with Kinser through turn four the next time around, but was unable to surge ahead. “The King of the Outlaws” pulled off a daring, first-corner move to pass Herrera in the first corner, and opened a 1.6-second advantage by lap 16.

Lasoski passed Kinser two laps later, only to have his nephew spin after colliding with the 12-time Knoxville Nationals champion. Flagman Doug Clark threw the caution flag and Kinser restarted in first place. “The King of the Outlaws” held off Lasoski throughout the final eight laps and Meyers finished in third place.

Tim Shaffer, who started outside the fourth row, passed Kerry Madsen and Logan with inside moves in turn four during the 20th and 24th laps to claim fourth place – the final automatic starting position in Saturday’s Dash Race.

Logan finished in fifth place, ahead of 12th-starting Joey Saldana, Madsen, Daryn Pittman, 17th-starting Terry McCarl and Danny Wood, who was driving Donny Schatz’s #15 Parker Stores J&J.

Logan rode an emotional roller coaster throughout opening night of the NAPA Classic. Gear problems forced him into the pits during his first qualifying lap, so he took one lap at the end of the session and was scored 17th quick. Logan won the First Heat Race and the Second Dash Race and finished fifth in the Preliminary Feature. WoO
