FARMER CITY, IL (June 23) – Steve Kinser closed to within 31 points of leader Danny Lasoski in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series standings Monday when he led all 35 laps in the rain-delayed "A" Feature at Farmer City Raceway. The $51,600 event was originally scheduled for May 8th.

The $10,000 victory, Kinser’s 12th of the season, was his 18th single-digit finish in the last 19 main events.

"One thing about winning races is, it never gets old," Kinser said following the 483rd victory of his incomparable career. "It's a good feeling every time you win no matter how many you win. We had a pretty good car all night. When the night goes right, everything looks easy, but it's never easy with these guys. One little mistake and you fall back a couple of positions.

"The only thing you have to watch here is, it's so hot it keeps laying that rubber down. It finally laid it down there at the end in the middle, and I got down there and just sort of rode it out."

Kinser, the fifth-fastest qualifier in the 40-car qualifying session, won every race he entered. After winning the Fourth Heat Race, he won the Dash Race the privilege of starting the main event on the pole.

"The King of the Outlaws" started next to his 18-year-old son, Kraig, and drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim into the lead as the green flag fell. Kraig slid off the back straightaway midway through the opening lap, allowing seven cars to pass him.

Kinser was six car-lengths ahead of Lasoski when he entered lapped traffic eight laps into the race. "The Dude" lined up behind Kinser after his nephew, Brian Brown, stopped in turn four with a flat right rear tire late in the 12th lap.

Lasoski almost took the lead with a slide move between the third and fourth corners within seconds after the green flag replaced the yellow, but was unable to drive NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle past Kinser. Brown brought out the caution flag again early in lap 14 when he slid off the racing surface and stopped in turn two.

Donny Schatz, who started inside the seventh row, drove his #15 Parker Stores J&J past five cars during the first half of the race. The First Heat Race winner passed Jason Johnson and Jason Sides during the 15th and 16th laps to claim sixth place.

"The King of the Outlaws" held an eight car-length advantage over Lasoski when he caught the back-markers two laps later. "The Dude" caught the leader in dense traffic during lap 21, only to have Paul McMahan, Joey Saldana and Second Heat Race winner Daryn Pittman pass him during the next seven laps.

McMahan, who won Sunday’s main event at Tri-City Speedway, challenged for the lead throughout lap 32, but fell five car-lengths behind when "The King of the Outlaws" squeezed past Tom Busch deep in the fourth corner with 1 ¼ laps remaining. Kinser took the checkered flag with six car-lengths to spare.

"Once the rubber got down on the race track, I was just going to stay in the groove," Kinser said. "I didn’t want to try to get by Tom on the outside because I didn’t know what would happen if I got up there, so I thought I’d just try to follow him until I felt or heard someone behind me. He finally slipped up there enough to let us get by."

"I caught him right there at the end and I didn't know how much tire I had left, so I was kind of being careful not to burn my tires up," McMahan said. "When he was getting held up by the lapped car, I figured that was going to be my one shot. I got alongside him a little bit and he cleared the lap car going into (turn) one, and I couldn't. We just held on for second."

Saldana finished in third place, ahead of Pittman, Lasoski, Schatz, Sides, Jason Meyers, Terry McCarl and Kraig Kinser.

Lasoski set his 16th fast time of the season, circling the high-banked, ¼-mile oval in 10.789 seconds –

an average speed of 83.418 M.P.H. WoO
