CARTERSVILLE, GA – Scott Knowles of Lanett, AL has clinched the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Championship. Knowles has accumulated 816 points based on his best 16 event point totals with eight wins, 20 top five finishes, and 22 top ten finishes in 24 starts driving the All-Star Graphics Warrior.

Knowles will be honored in December at the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Awards Banquet in Tampa, FL, and will receive a $1,500 cash prize, a new GM Performance 604 engine, and a new race car chassis. With the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region title, Knowles will pad his resume that already has some pretty impressive highlights.

In 2008, Knowles was the Sunoco Race Fuels Rookie of the Year on the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Tour, and he also finished third overall in the point standings. Knowles has announced his intentions on returning the to the National Tour in 2010.

Knowles will try to make history by becoming the only driver to win the Sunoco Race Fuels Rookie of the Year Award, a NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Regional Championship, and the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Championship. The only driver that has come close to that is Chip Brindle of Chatsworth, GA, who won the 2007 RoY Award and the 2008 National title.

Knowles will also receive an invitation to the 4th Annual NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Fall Nationals at Columbus Speedway in Columbus, MS on November 27-28. The invitation-only event for the top NeSmith Chevrolet WRS competitors pays $2,000-to-win. Knowles will also participate in the Race of Regions for the top ten drivers in the East and West Region point standings.

The only driver with a chance to defeat Knowles for the title was Larry Harrod of Plains, GA, who only competed in one of the two races available to him during Week 24 of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region season. Harrod drove the Harrod Logging Scorpion to his eighth victory of the season on Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL.

Harrod did not compete in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region event on Thursday night at Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, NC that was won by Jason Deal of Copperhill, TN in the Cougar Fireworks GRT. It was Deal’s fourth win of the season.

The most points Harrod can earn with just two events left on the East Region schedule, plus a NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Touring event where he could earn ten bonus points, is 814, two shy of Knowles’ current total. Harrod currently has 796 points based on his best 16 event point totals. Harrod’s two lowest event point totals are a pair of 46s.

Harrod has clinched the second spot in the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region point standings, and he will receive $1,000 at the Awards Banquet. Harrod also receives an invitation to the Fall Nationals, and will compete in the Race of Regions.

In addition, Harrod is the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Track Champion at East Alabama Motor Speedway, and will be eligible to compete in the Race of Champions at the Fall Nationals.

Behind Harrod, there is a four-way battle for the third, and final points fund paying spot, in the East Region points chase with just four points separating third, fourth and fifth-place drivers and the sixth-place driver is just 19 points away from third-place, that pays $500 at the Awards Banquet.

The 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Champion Adam Martin of Talladega, AL is currently third in the East Region standings with 760 points based on his best 16 event point totals in the Martin Racing Barry Wright. Martin can still earn ten bonus points, and net as much as 12 points to bring his point total up to a possible 782.

Montana Dudley of Phenix City, AL is fourth with 758 points based on his best 16 event point totals. Dudley can still earn ten bonus points, and net as much as 12 points to bring his point total up to a possible 780.

Nowell can earn ten bonus points at the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National event at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL on October 3, and can net as much as 16 points in the remaining East Region events to bring his point total up to a possible 782.

Eiland has 741 points based on his best 16 event point totals, can earn ten bonus points, and he can net up to 21 points to bring his season point total up to a possible 772.

In the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region, three drivers are still in the running for the 2009 championship. Two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS leads the West Region standings with 806 points based on his best 16 event point totals with eight wins, 24 top five, and 25 top tens in 31 starts.

The Friday night event at HMP was rained out on Friday night.
