JACKSON, Minn. (Aug. 5) – The Jackson Speedway hosted the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour for the first time in four years Thursday night and the fans at the historic half-mile oval got a well-deserved treat for their long wait.
Polesitter Steve Wetzstein beat fellow front-row starter Jon Tesch to the first turn and led the first two laps of the WIX Filters “A” Main before the race’s first caution occurred on lap 2 when Ryan Gustin stopped on the track with a flat tire.
Gustin’s crew was able to change the tire and he rejoined the back of the pack.
Wetzstein powered out to a three-car-length margin on the restart and led through lap 17 before 2007 USMTS National Champion Jason Krohn made his move and took the reigns.
Five laps later, Wetzstein’s bid for his first USMTS victory were dashed by a broken axle.
Corey Dripps, meanwhile, was battling among the top 5 after starting 12th and Gustin worked his way back into the top 10.
Dripps was able to close in on the leader, but Krohn was too strong and took the checkered flag first to pocket the $2,000 winner’s share of the prize money.
Tommy Myer – a two-time winner at Jackson – finished third behind Dripps, Tesch held on for fourth and Gustin impressed the audience as he clawed his way back to a fifth-place finish.
Mike Hansen, Kelly Shryock, Zack VanderBeek, Don Gerritsen Jr. and DandyLand Farms Rookie of the Year contender Curt Myers rounded out the top-10 finishers.
With one race left to decide the Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region, Gustin leads Myer by just 8 points (988 to 980), but Gustin gets to take the full first-place points with him into The Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship presented by Bad Boy Mowers which begins next Thursday, Aug. 12.
The Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region champ won’t be officially decided until Sept. 5 at the Kasson Speedway when the rain-shortened event from July 14 is completed prior to a full program that night.
The rest of the top 10 in current regional points are also now qualified for The Hunt, as well as Chase Junghans who finished 11th in the standings but maintained perfect attendance in the region.
Krohn is third with 973 markers, followed by Shryock (940), Tesch (887), Tim Donlinger (865), VanderBeek (792), Doug Hillson (770), Dereck Ramirez (734) and Wetzstein (708).
Donlinger, who captured the Yeager Machine Upper Midwest Region title in 2008 en route to winning the USMTS National Championship, blew a motor in hot laps Thursday night and was unable to start his heat race or the main event.
The Dart Great Plains Region presented by Allstar Performance will crown a champion and advance another batch of competitors into The Hunt with the region’s final race on Friday at the Murray County Speedway in Slayton, Minn., for the 7th Annual Minnesota Summer Challenge.
This will be the 13th time the United States Modified Touring Series has invaded “Slaytona” and, once again, Shryock leads the all-time win list with four victories – all coming in back-to-back-to-back seasons from 2005 to 2007, including twice in 2006.
Donlinger was the first driver to capture a USMTS feature at the Murray County Speedway on May 24, 2002, and he won again in 2008 en route to winning the USMTS National Championship later that year.
Tommy Myer is also a two-time winner at MCS while Scott Drake, Tesch, Mike Sorensen and defending event winner Al Hejna have each tasted victory one time.
Gates open at 5:00, hot laps begin at 6:45 and the green flag is unfurled at 7:00.
Race fans can pick up $2-off coupons on Friday at Casey’s General Stores locations in Fulda and Tracy. Check out www.caseys.com for more information or to find the location nearest you.
The Murray County Speedway is located on the west side of Slayton on SR 30, then 0.8 mile south on Juniper Ave. For more information, call the track hotline at 507-393-3075 or visit www.murraycountyspeedway.net online.
