LAKE PERRIS, CA (February 22) – Danny Lasoski grabbed a share of the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series points lead Saturday by winning the 51st “A” Feature of his career at Perris Auto Speedway.
Lasoski, who also won at Perris Auto Speedway early in the 2000 season, paced the qualifying session for the second straight night. The 2001 O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series champion started on the pole and took the lead when Sammy Swindell spun early in the sixth lap.
Beating Brad Furr under the checkered flag by a straightaway gave “The Dude” 288 points, tying him with Jac Haudenschild who finished third in his second consecutive race.
Lasoski, who set Perris Auto Speedway’s single-lap record with a 129.73-M.P.H. lap last February 23rd, paced the qualifying session with a 14.106-second lap Saturday. He finished fourth in the First Heat Race and earned the right to start the 30-lap main event on the pole by winning the First Dash Race.
Swindell, who won the Second Dash Race, beat Lasoski down the front straightaway as the green flag fell in the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series’ second “A” Feature of the year. Haudenschild, who started outside the third row, passed Joey Saldana and Brian Paulus during the opening lap to take over fourth place.
Swindell, who won O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series championships in 1981, 1982 and 1997, was eight car-lengths ahead of “The Dude” when he entered lapped traffic four laps into the race.
Brian Coelho and Jonathan Allard collided in front of Swindell the next time around, causing him to turn the #1 Ore-Cal Eagle completely around. Lasoski took the lead while five other drivers passed Swindell. Sammy spun and stopped in the fourth corner several seconds later.
Lasoski drove defending NASCAR Winston Cup champion Tony Stewart’s #20 J.D. Byrider Eagle ahead of the field as the green flag replaced the yellow, only to have Allard stop in turn two with brake problems early in the eighth lap.
“The Dude” controlled the ensuing restart and opened a 10-car-length advantage over Furr within four laps. Lasoski raced into lapped traffic as Shane Stewart passed fellow Oklahoman Daryn Pittman for seventh place with a high move between turns three and four late in lap 12.
Furr, whose crew replaced the engine in his #2 Sanmina-SCI Eagle after the qualifying session, closed to within five car-lengths of the lead in dense lapped traffic two laps later.
Stewart, who finished second in the World of Outlaws Gumout Series standings a year ago, exchanged sixth place with Steve Kinser during the 19th and 20th laps. Stewart drove the #4M MIN Motorsports car around Kinser high in the second corner, only to have the defending and 17-time O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series champion regain the position in the low groove between turns one and two the next time around.
“The King of the Outlaws” drove his #11 Quaker State Maxim past Joey Saldana deep in the fourth corner to take over fifth place late in lap 22.
Craig Dollansky, who won the first “A” Feature of his O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series career at Perris Auto Speedway on October 30, 1999, passed Stewart for eighth place with 2 2/3 laps remaining. Tim Shaffer drove the #83 Beef Packers Eagle past Stewart in the low groove between turns one and two a split-second later to claim ninth place.
Furr was racing down the back straightaway as Lasoski claimed the $10,000 first prize. “The Wild Child” finished in third place, ahead of Brian Paulus, Kinser, Saldana, Pittman, Dollansky, Shaffer and Stewart.
Tim Kaeding, who won the O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series 25th Anniversary Season opener at Kings Speedway Friday, crashed with Allard as the green flag fell in the First Heat Race. The California rivals finished first and fifth in the “B” Feature to qualify for the main event. Kaeding finished 22nd and Allard was 24th in the “A” Feature.
The O’Reilly World of Outlaws Series will sanction the $112,145 J.D. Byrider Outlaw Nationals at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Friday and Saturday. WoO
