"FAST RICHARD" LAYNE 'THE FASTEST' AGAINST 57 OTHER BIG-DOLLAR MODIFIED DEFENDANTS IN THE 1-DAY DELAYED 7th ANNUAL ODESSA POOL, PATIO AND SPA "MEMORIAL MODIFIED MAYHEM"!

Newcomer Hammon Wins in Street Stocks, Sprints to Dan Chevalier, 'the dweeb' Carter Scores Again in Limited Late Models!

For six long years, 6-time champion and all-time CMS feature win record holder "Fast" Richard Layne from Kansas City just couldn't win one of the three, yearly 'Big Ones'. Last season, however, he finally got the 'monkey off his back' when he won his first in the Independence Day 'Bar B Que Bowl' and then again in the Labor Day 'Mania'. He now has added yet another victory in the Odessa Pool, Patio and Spa's 7th Annual "Memorial Modified Mayhem" to now be the first to score wins throughout the 'trifecta'. And it was against the biggest and stoutest field of cars ever assembled for this heritage-filled special.

Rains postponed the big event the night before, and as always advertised, the Sunday rain-date worked wonders. One hundred-eight cars had signed-in on Saturday, 52 of them in the "Mighty Modifeids". Sunday night it grew to 118 total race machines and 58 mods.

Along with those numbers, the rabid fans were now overflowing from the stands.

WOFC Sprint car president Dan Chevalier from Belton captured the farm and Home of Warrensburg/ T-Mobile 15 lap main event making it a different named winner, beside Potter, this year. After winning the season opener in the Country Kitchen Limited Late Models, Warrensburg's won Marc 'the dweeb' Carter did it again ina time-shortened 12 lap affair. And a 'new-name' driver this CMS season in the illustrious Missouri Beef Industries Council Street Stock division, Steve Hammon from Pleasant Hill was never heavily challenged race-long for his first win.

To sort out the big pack of modifieds, it took six, 10-lap, mostly 10-car qualifying heats and three 'last chance' 'B' mains to shake-out the top 24 starters in the 40 lap Mayhem championshjip event.

Leeton's Tracy 'country boy' Wolf, Red Brush's 'chargin' Charlie Ebert, Eddie Bray, Jr. from Archie, "Fast Richard", Peculiar's Danny Scrogham and Curt Rackers from Holt's Summit captured the heat wins and made up the first three, feature starting rows. Tom 'rooster' Charles from Bonner Springs, Warrensburg's Dean Wille and Tim Karrick from Basehor, in his all-new, first time run short track car, found their way up to the 'A' with their 'B' victories.

The mods, being paced by Earl Walls recently, beautifully refurbished '57 T-Bird with Wolf, who happened to have done the beautiful, leather interior work on the 'bird', on the front-row-pole were fired up and 'ready to rock'.

The 'country boy' immediately grabbed a steadfast lead until he received the black mechanical flag on lap 5 as a huge spray of fuel was emanating from his new mount. The yellow was immediately dropped due to Wolf's gas cap sitting in the middle of the front-chute. Tracy was able to have the officials screw the lid back on and was able to rejoin at the rear before the green popped back up.

Charlie Ebert was the new leader for the next 6 rounds until Bray, running the lowest side of low, slowly eased by. Layne, in the meantime, worked his way into third riding dangerously close to the 'edge'.

While all of this scrambling was happening at the front, the crowd also kept their eyes on two tail-end starters. Well known hot-shoe David Trauernicht, all the way down from Beatrice, Nebraska and starting dead last, and Charles, who took the green in 19th, hustled hot and heavy through the three-lane-wide pack.

While that twosome tussled with the mid-runners for the next twenty laps, it appeared that Layne was staying comfortable in his own, high-side 'fast layne', but barely holding his spot. In the final 10 laps, it looked like Layne found the car's 'afterburner switch' and proceeded to ease on by Bray. The top five were still a big, close-running clump, then Charles and Trauernicht arrived on the scene from behind making it a 'group'.

"We had a problem right off the bat when the mud-plug broke in half and the wheel got mud stuck in one side," explained an elated Layne after the twin checkers. "Everytime I'd try to come out of turn hard, the car would spin the rear tires a bit and it would start hoppin'. So I went as fast as I could go but no more, 'cause we had a long way to go and I didn't wanna' shake Bobby's (Hunt) car apart early on".

"With ten to go, I got on it harder and crossed my fingers nothing bad would happen. It didn't, and here we are again!" Layne reiterated, while counting his $2,000 in winnings.

On the final circuit, with the over-capacity crowd going crazy, Charles squeaked by Bray for a more than fought-for second and $1,500, Bray got his well earned $1,000 in third, Trauernicht closed his first CMS visit with $900 in fourth while always a runner as a 'toward the front flyer', Concordia's Jason 'trouble' Thompson, pocketed fifth and $800.

Pulling down healthy lucre in finishing spots 6th to 10th were three-time consecutive NCRA modified champion John Allen from Chanute, Ks ($700), Ebert ($600), Bob Tesh from Jefferson City ($500), Sedalia's Terry 'the terminator Schultze, after starting 22nd from the 'B', ($400) and tenth ($300) to 21st starter Tim Karrick.

Fifteen cars were still under power at the end.

Noted drivers who had bad luck for this event included 4-time 'Big One' winner Chad 'the gator' Lyle and 'smokin' Joe Walker, who both had early event mechanical malfunctions. This year's opening night CMS winner in the "Mighty Modifieds, popular 'Movin Dave Meyer, started the main in eighth place but shed a wheel and was scored at 18th.

The Limited Late Model feature run took seven complete restarts to get the ball rollin', and "the dweeb's" run was a hot tour from green to checkers in the Limited Late Models.

On one of the re-tries, Knob Noster's Jim Wilson got hooked up with anopther racer on the fastest part of the back-chute and side rolled his car four to five times, bringing up the red flag. Wilson walked away unscathed, he car needed assistance back to the pits.

Following the now two-time winner Carter across the line were second placer and points leader, driving the Finkemeier car for the night, Kevin 'kid Coyne', third was captured by Jason King, soon to turn 55 years old Buddy Blain, back after a crunching crash the week before, hustled to fourth while 2001 CMS LLM champ Bruce Curry corraled fifth.

The Street Stock grind looked to be yet another win for the 'King of Street Stockers', John 'the boomer' Brooks, but his drive shaft departed on lap five, also breaking his tranny and putting him on the sidelines. Unknown to most until now, Hammon drove a steady, well controlled race and was not denied the win, the always consistent Jesse 'the dealer' Wheeler, now the lone points leader, patiently settled for second, Cole Wimmer was in the top five for the third time in third, fourth was found by the other Ebert sibling, Johnny, and 2002 champ Scott Dukes floated to fifth.

Wayne Stevens of Norborne won the Wheeler's Trailer 'B' feature street stock event.

"Dad' Dan Chevalier's first WOFC Sprint win of the year may have been sparked by his sons Matt and Joe. The two chased hard 'the old man' the entire way. Why the Belton trio diced back and fourth, Jimmy Garner snuck his mount in to capture second. Matt 'the hat' and 'let's go' Joe had to settle for third and fourth while Robert Bogue consistently worked his way up to take fifth.

Early in the fracas, Raymore's Victor Atkins had his wheels go up, and over, for a single roll. He walked dejectedly back to the trailer with is car being towed behind.

Bits from the CMS Pits

Many heads were turned and a lot of close inspection took place when many noticed track owner and director Earl Walls' newly refurbished 1957 Thunderbird sitting in the pits before the races. The classic car, which he has owned for several years, was recently dismantled completely, powder painted then lovingly reassembled. Once white in color but now a very deep, candy-apple red, a color rarely seen around any more, was driven by former sprint car pilot and racing engine builder Rick Darling as the championship event's pace car. Many wondered why Earl put the immaculate car out on the tack-fast dirt. "That's what cars are for, and the race track is an excellent atmosphere in which to use it," Walls commented. "It'll be just perfect to have here when we have our fourth annual "Good Old Time Racing" night on August 23rd". It will again be the return as the fifth class on those special, yearly Saturday night with the 'real deal, real steel' 1950's race era coupes.

Speaking of Darling, all-time master scorekeeper Karen Darling had so much to score at such a fast pace all night that one of her pencils actually starting smoking. It didn't bother her a bit… she just kept on scoring. Nothing…. and I mean nothing.... ever stops Karen. Before the next 'Big One', plans to mount a fire extinguisher in the press box are under way.

When asked about what he thought of the 'quick-grade' part of manicuring the track at intermission by maintenance guru Jerry Boeh every week, Tom Charles had this to say: "I think it's great. When we run the heats, it's pretty tough early in the night and you really have to be precise to move up through the pack and still stay out of trouble. But that's just the way it is. When they get the track ready for the most important races, the features, it opens the track up to be a pole all the way to the top edge, very race-able surface. You can really use multiple grooves here, and it makes for good racing, and better driving situations." And when the 26 year, 323 feature winning, 27 time champion Charles talks…. everyone stops and listens. By the way, congrats to 'the rooster' ... his birthday was tonight… just add the number 20 to his total racing career years and that's his age. Walla.

Very nice to have so many people, from so many places attending the biggest ever 'Big One' special event. Some that were there include fast-pacing racing brothers Randy and Gary Don Ainsworth, two top asphalt racers for years, along with media reps Tim Williams from the Concordian newspaper, replete with a neck-full of cameras to aim, KC-Racin webmasters Dustin and John IV Layne, Central Missouri News sportwriter Mike Phillips and the very professional, racing radio and Racin-Boys master, Kirk Elliot. Elliot always seems to know where the best races really are, and actually WORKS during his visits as a job… which, in reality, it is just that. Kudos to all for being here.

All big four classes of cars will be at it again this Saturday for 'Country Kitchen Race Night'. Gates will fly open at 5 pm, hot laps at 7 and the first qualifier flagged at 7:30. Admission will be the customary Adults-$10, Sr. Citizens-$8, ages 6 thru 11-$6 and under 6, free. Pit passes will remain the same at $20.00.
