(Lebanon) Terry Phillips can rest easier now that he has claimed victory in the 5th Annual Larry Phillips Memorial that was held at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway this Labor Day Weekend. The big two day event featured the Super Outlaw Late Models of the MARS and MLRA Series, and brought in heavy hitting talent from across the Midwest.

Terry Phillips made the winning pass on Bill Frye on lap 14 to the cheers of his many fans in attendance during the $10,000-to-win 40 lap Late Model race Saturday night. He rode the high line around turns three and four on the high banked red clay and shot past Frye on the straightaway. Phillips never looked back.

"They got to fighting on for the bottom, and I thought 'There's my opportunity'", said Phillips from Victory Lane about getting by Frey and John Anderson "They're trying to block each other, and they slowed down a little bit and I got by them."

"It's been a long time," Phillips said about his pursuit of a victory at the Larry Phillips Memorial at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway. "This is special, I don't know what to say."

The Lebanon I-44 Speedway was the site of many of Larry Phillips'
career victories, and Terry Phillips was thrilled to have won the big race named for his late father.

Frye Finished 2nd ahead of Anderson, who won the 20-lap qualifying feature on Friday night. Lebanon's Brandon McCormick had a strong run, finishing 5th from his 10th place start. Brad Looney finished 15th after having trouble during the race. Last year's winner, Brian Shirley, finished 19th, ahead of MLRA favorite Al Purkey. I-44 Speedway regulars Burl Woods, Chris Smyser, Larry Jones, and track champion Dustin Mooneyham finished 21st through 24th.

Friday night, the A-Modifieds flew around the high banks of the Lebanon I-44 Speedway in a 25-lap $1,000-to-win race, and Pea Ridge, Arkansas, native Johnny Bone, Jr., smoked the rest of the deep field of fast Modifieds.

Bone Jr. was thrilled to claim victory on during the Larry Phillips Memorial.

"I knew Larry when I was a kid, and I raced against when he ran dirt."

Bone Jr. got way out ahead of Terry Beckham Jr. and never looked back.

"You got to be worried about [Beckham]," Bone Jr. said about the 2nd place finisher. "He runs good wherever he goes."

Rex Merritt finished third, ahead of 2007 Modified champion Tony Jackson Jr.

Saturday night saw big money races in the Factory Stock, Bomber and B-Modified classes. Ben Solberg was strong all night, and claimed his first win ever at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway after running there many times during this season.

"I've wanted to win here for three years, and I'm just so excited that I finally got a win," said Solberg in Victory Lane. He thanked David Hendrix and Tony Jackson Jr. for helping him build his car.

Kevin Brown finished 2nd, ahead of Tim Rffle, Kevin Crider and James Ellis in the 15-lap Factory Stock feature.

Shawn Nations had a new body on his #14 B-Mod, and he left the rest of the field in his dust en route to his victory Saturday night, that put $400 in his pocket.

"Black's always fast, it's a good color,"

"It means a lot," Nations said about winning during the Larry Phillips Memorial. "Larry was a great guy"

JC Morton and Landin Johnson crossed the finish line side by side at the end of the 15-lap $200-to-win Bomber feature Saturday night.
Johnson thought he had edged Morton, and was shocked when the track officials awarded Morton the victory. Morton, who has run strong since entering the Bomber class late in the season at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway, was elated to claim his second victory during the Larry Phillips Memorial.

"I didn't know who won, it was pretty close," Morton said about winning the closest race of the year.

The Bombers will get the spotlight this coming Saturday at the Lebanon
I-44 Speedway during the Bomber 500, with $500 going to the feature winner. The B-Mods, Rookies and Pro-4's will also run. Then the season at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway comes to a close Friday September
21 and Saturday September 22 for the MARS-MLRA Fall Shootout, featuring Phillips, Frye, Will Vaught and all of the fastest Late Model drivers in the Midwest. Gates open at 5, racing begins at 730PM, and kids 12 and under are always admitted free at the Lebanon
I-44 Speedway, located off of interstate exit 135 on Old Route 66.
