What a difference a night makes. On Thursday, Brian Leppo timed in seventh quick and was one spot short of transferring to the A-Feature from his heat race on the opening night of the Summer Nationals at Williams Grove Speedway. He then came up just short of transferring from the B-Main into the A-Feature and was forced to watch the event from on top of his hauler.

That all changed on Friday night, as he had the best seat in the house, leading all 25 laps to earn his first career World of Outlaws win and his first win of the season in the second night of the Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals Presented by Advance Auto Parts at the famed Williams Grove Speedway.

Leppo used a strong start from the outside of the front row to win a drag race with Steve Kinser into the first turn. He then opened a consistent lead over the 20-time World of Outlaws champion who was looking for his ninth win of the season.

“I don’t know what to say really,” said Leppo, driver of the Swope Salvage & Recycling JEI. “To win a World of Outlaws race after lining up on the front row with the ‘King of the Outlaws’ is a dream come true. I think we accomplished a great thing here tonight by beating 54 good race cars drivers.”

Leppo had to endure a red flag and five cautions, including one with just three laps to go, en route to his second career win at Williams Grove Speedway. On each restart, he had Kinser lined up right on his bumper and got on the gas at just the perfect second each and every time to power his way into the first turn and open up a comfortable lead.

“I told myself to not pay attention to the scoreboard,” said the winner, who was greeted by a throng of family and friends in the winner’s circle. “I didn’t want to get psyched out knowing that the guy behind me has far more experience than I’ll have in my lifetime. I had to keep hitting my lines, and until you mess up it is your race to lose.”

Several time over the course of the 25-lap event, Kinser looked to the low side of the track in turns one and two and the high side in turns three and four for a way around Leppo. On a couple of occasions he was able to close in on the native of Spring Grove, Pennsylvania but could not quite get even with him.

Kinser finished second in the Q Oil Maxim, after winning the first heat and the Crane Cams Dash to earn the pole position. He now has 29 Top-10 finishes on the season, with 20 of those being in the Top-Five.

Kinser began the night by winning the first heat to earn a spot in the Crane Cams Dash. He won the dash for the fourth time this season to earn his fourth pole position.

Lucas Wolfe finished third on the second night of the Summer Nationals, after starting sixth. He got around Paul McMahan early and then set his sights on Joey Saldana, whose night ended after there was some slight contact between the cars. Wolfe charged around Craig Dollansky and closed to within a few car lengths of Kinser several times.

“It was a pretty good run,” said Wolfe, driver of the Allebach Racing Maxim. “We were better than we were last night. I think a lot of it had to do with starting position tonight. It’s always good to run strong with these guys. The more I get to run with them, the better I feel that I get. The more comfortable I feel racing with them.”

Paul McMahan finished fourth on Friday night after he was ninth on Thursday night. The two-time winner this season now has 24 Top-10 finishes in 2007, as he continues his second season behind the wheel for two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart.

“We had a good race car,” said McMahan, driver of the Bass Pro Shops Eagle. “We went out fairly late to qualify and ended up 10th quick. We won our heat and drew our lucky number 8 (in the dash). We had a good start in the dash and got up to fifth and that made our whole night there. We’ll just keep plugging away.”

Craig Dollansky was fifth in the Karavan Trailers Maxim. The native of Elk River, Minnesota has 29 Top-10 finishes, with 15 of those being in the Top-Five.

Donny Schatz started 16th and finished sixth to earn the KSE Race Products Hard Charger Award. He moved into eighth just a couple laps into the race. The winner of the opening night of the Summer Nationals was working the line right near the wall for a portion of the race and tested several spots on the track as he warmed up for the $20,000 finale on Saturday night.

Kenny Jacobs was seventh in the Weikerts Livestock JEI, with Jason Sides eighth in the Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim. Sides accumulated the most points on the first two nights of the Summer Nationals and will thus start on the pole of the first heat on Saturday night in the finale, as the heat races will be lined up by the accumulated points earned on the first two nights.

Doug Esh, who won the National Open last season at Williams Grove to earn his first career World of Outlaws A-Feature win was ninth on Friday night in the Kinard Trucking J&J. Jason Martin was 10th in the NOS Energy Drink Maxim, after wining the fourth heat to earn a spot in the Crane Cams Dash.

After being so close to racing his way into the A-Feature on Thursday night, Leppo finished second in the third heat race on Friday night, to secure himself a starting spot in the Crane Cams Dash, where he finished second.

“This makes for a good weekend,” smiled Leppo. “I hope we have good luck tomorrow. This definitely covers last night’s flaws. We accomplished a good feat tonight.”

The finale of the Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals Presented by Advance Auto Parts, will be 30 laps and pay $20,000 to the winner. Williams Grove is one of the most demanding tracks on the World of Outlaws schedule, but with his experience at the track, Leppo is confident the team can keep up the momentum.

“It just takes fives more laps of patience,” he noted. “You have to keep the car underneath you for 30 laps instead of 25. That is the key to these races, to stay with your car and keep going forward.”

Wolfe was one of only 11 drivers that made the A-Feature on each of the first two nights of the Summer Nationals. With 54 cars signed into the pit area, it was by far one of the most daunting fields for a World of Outlaws event this season.

“It’s a tough deal here with all the cars,” said Wolfe. “The few guys that beat me tonight didn’t make the show last night so that shows you how tough it is. I was fortunate to take advantage of a good opportunity.”

McMahan was one of just three drivers with Jason Sides and Donny Schatz being the others, to earn a Top-10 finish in the A-Feature on both of the first two nights of the Summer Nationals.

“This is probably the toughest race track we come to, with the competition,” stated McMahan. “To make the show both nights and to be in the Top-three in points is a good thing. The big prize is tomorrow.”

The Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals Presented by Advance Auto Parts wrap up on Saturday night at Williams Grove Speedway, with the winner taking home $20,000.
