Long gone dragstrip

How many of us remember the dragstrip out in Pacific Missouri by the Nike missile base? It has been gone a long time but the old track was put to good use as subdivision streets! They are still there today. I remember seeing my first funny cars there. "The Lawman" was one that I remember. I think it was a altered wheelbase 65 Dodge Coronet but I could be mistaken. Anyone else have any memories of the place or pictures of it in operation?

Yep, been there a few times both when it was open and after It closed.
Not a very spectacular place.
The one day I do remember was when, I think it was, the Arfons bros ran a jet dragster there and every hot dog wrapper in the county was blown up the embankment
behind the starting line, and over the fence, into the Nike missile site.
I bet those GI's were policing the area for a week!!!!
After the joint closed we used to go out there for impromptu grudge racing.
People would line up on each side of the tract, right on the very edge. Of course those at the far end couldn't see who was at the line and would step out on the track for a better look-see.
Then as the cars traveled down the track the crowd would open up like Moses parting the Red Sea and as soon as the, Israelites, Whoops, wrong story. A soon as the cars went by the spectators were right back on the track.
Those were the days, my friends.

THANX RICH

PS I have no pics, because back then my phone was attached to the wall at home!!!

We were guilty of a few of those impromptu grudge races too! That place was bare bones but it was fun and close to home. Those were the days...….

I actually won my trophy class in a 57 Pontiac with a 347 2 barrel-against a tri power 58 Pontiac with I guess a 389--like a dummy I gave my trophy to some girl that went to Roosevelt--Kathy marx--sure wish I had kept it

I still have moments at Pevely remembering those straight line days..... and the old Gateway when Stages was still operating. I hated the old 2 lane JB bridge but it could take you places and you would remember for a life time. Too many foggy Friday night trips home Belle Ville.

Hey Fireball- do you know or have you known any Bauers there in Poky? I used to know a Don and his son Scott. Don worked at the MFA back then. His sister was a nurse at the
Greenville hospital.

only lived in pokey 18 yrs---if they go to the races then I am sure I know them---I ran the short strip at pevelly on a 360 Yamaha combo bike-on or off road--
