(Warrensburg) Maybe a prelude to the Sunday night July 3 second Mighty Modified Special of the year --Chad Lyle starting from the third row beat a fast field of 31 Modifieds at Central Missouri Speedway on Country Kitchen Race Night. A late arriving crowd was just settling in when the 305 Sprints started with a make-up feature from a rain out earlier this month.

Unfortunately, the first lap produced a bad wreck in turn three when Joe Chevalier from Belton flipped over 4 times and ended up crashing through a fence before settling onto his wheels. The car did not take much damage, but Chevalier had to taken to the hospital for further tests for an undisclosed injury. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Chevalier family and hope for the best for this fine young driver. After a lengthy delay Randy Roberts quickly drove his 305 Sprint into the lead, but was challenged several times by Gabe Maycock, driving a back –up car and starting on the back row after suffering a blown engine the week prior. Roberts finally settled into the lead and took the checkers for his second feature win of the weekend after winning at LA Raceway on Friday Night.

Several of the 20 starting Street Stocks were pushing the limits with multiple re-starts for their feature race which pushed the front row of Jay Lyle and Wayne Stevens to the back for another restart of the Street Stock feature. After the feature was underway several cautions kept the cars bunched up after Nathan Himes drove through the hot pit lane. Wayne Harper, the current point’s leader, spun in turn four and later had to exit the track with mechanical problems. Herb Danner from Holden was leading when he had some problems and also had to be pushed off. Mark Carter then inherited the lead and never looked back for the street stock feature win of the evening. This was Carter’s second feature win of the weekend after taking the Street Stock Special at Grain Valley on Friday night. The j66 of Lyle ran a great race coming back all the way back up to finish third from the 20th position.

The Midwest Sprint Car Series (MSCS) 360 Sprints and the 305 CMS Sprints ran a combined feature event with 16 cars starting the show. They both ran their own heat races with Danny Billings from Topeka, Kansas victorious on a last lap pass in the 360 Sprint Heat race and Randy Roberts out of Mora and Matt Close from LaMonte taking the 305 Sprint heat race checkers. The feature started with the MSCS 360 Sprints at the head of the pack with the 305s lined up behind them. Randy Roberts started in the fourth row behind the MSCS Sprints, but didn’t take long to work his way up to second place by the fourth lap followed close by Gabe Maycock in his back up number 99 Sprint car. Maycock ended up pulling off the track with mechanical problems later in the feature to finish tenth. Chris Parkinson from Gladstone held the lead in his 360 Sprint for awhile, but could not hold off Roberts. This race did produce two feature winners with Randy Roberts taking the overall victory for the 305 Sprints and Parkinson, the MSCS 360 Sprint feature winner. For Roberts this was his third 305 Sprint feature win of the weekend after taking two features on Saturday night in the 305 Sprint division.

31 Mighty Modifieds registered at CMS and produced some hot racing action throughout the heat races. Numerous times the drivers were two and three wide on the track exciting the crowd and bringing them to their feet for several finishes. Dean Wille drew the first heat on the front row and stayed out in front for his victory. The second heat was a great battle for second place between Chad Lyle, Donald Danner and Richard Layne. Smoking Joe Walker won the second heat with Lyle close behind in the second. The rest of heats were full of exciting racing action with Dennis Walrath taking the third heat and Alan Deatherage victorious in the fourth. The B- feature was another exciting race with Lonnie Hibner from Chillicothe taking the B main followed by Terry Schultz of Sedalia. The battle for the final transfer positions resulted in Charlie Ebert making the A main event. The Promoters provisional went to Chad Staus to start in the final spot for the A feature.

The 20 lap A Mighty Modified feature event started with 25 cars and finished with 23 cars on the track on a smooth surface throughout the night. Dean Wille led the field to the green flag and held to the lead through lap five. Behind him was a battle for second and third with Joe Walker, Chad Lyle and Alan Deatherage fighting for position down low on the track. Finally, Lyle was able to get his nose underneath Wille to take the lead on lap eight after Curt Potter lifted over the bank in turn two. Deatherage later had to pull off the track with a mechanical problem, but the race continued with his car in the infield.

Lyle then settled into his lead with a comfortable margin at the end of the race with Dennis Walrath moving up from row two into second place and Dave Meyer finishing third. A nice run from Terry Schultz from Sedalia out of the B main starting from the twenty second position to an eight place finish in the A feature.

You don’t want to miss the racing events at Central Missouri Speedway next weekend with two big nights of hot racing action during the Weekly Farm and Home show on Saturday night with KMZU 100.7 Race Night and the Tom Wilson Memorial Mighty Modified Special and Limited Late Model Special Features on Sunday night, July 3.
