(Macon, IL) With Father’s Day fast approaching, Macon Speedway dedicated a night to some fathers…and reverends and pastors with the third annual Faster Pastor event. Eight area drivers, along with members of their congregation, filled Macon Speedway for a night of family and religious fun.
BJ Deal of Brownstown is not only a Street Stock driver, he is also a pastor of the First Baptist Church in Brownstown, and starting in the back of the field driving a 4-cylinder Hornet, Deal took over the lead from 2008 Faster Pastor Keith Jenkins and won the 6-lap event during the StarTek Intermission program.
Macon Speedway fans were treated with many specials and surprises through the evening, including double Pro and Amateur Hornet features. The final feature to be made up from the April 18th rain-out were given the green and checkered flag as Zach Dodd took his first Pro Hornet feature and Heidi Hames won her sixth and final Amateur Hornet feature. After the sixth feature win, Hames would move up to the Pro level.
In the regularly-scheduled features, Joe Reed starved off David Reed and Jeff Dodd for his fifth feature of the year, second in-a-row, and his points lead grew over second-place Jeff Dodd. Richard Johnson, driving David Reed’s car, took the Amateur Hornet feature, racing 20 feature cars.
The Touchstone Energy Sportsman feature had Taylorville’s Scott Landers taking his first feature of the year. Timmy Dick made the move for second, passing Mike Pickering and Terry Reed took fourth.
Kyle Logue grabbed his fifth Late Model feature in 2009. Roger Brickler had the pole after holding off Logue in the heat race but was unable to stay in front of Logue as the Cisco native and defending track champion grabbed the lead on lap seven and didn’t look back.
A nine-caution flag Modified feature finished with pole-sitter Jeremy Nichols winning for the first time. Kyle Logue, once again driving the 11, was behind Nichols from the start of the race and all the way until lap 20. Aaron Burcham started tenth and wound up third.
The second race at Macon Speedway for the CILSSS and $500-to-win feature started 21 of 22 cars and only needed three cautions to get a winner. The 25-lap feature saw two lead changes as Terry Reed passed Mike Pickering on lap eight. From behind the hunter to the hunted really was a tough thing to do for Reed. BJ Deal, the 2009 Faster Pastor, trailed Reed with CILSSS winner Troy Dodson in third, followed by Pickering, Blake Shelley and Steve Ewing also in pursuit of the leader.
On the lap 23 restart, Reed did everything imaginable to stop Shelley from overtaking the lead. Coming out of the final lap of the final turn, Shelley tried one last time but it would be the worst decision as he spun the car around and lost the chance of the win and would take second place.
An absolutely exciting evening of racing wrapped up and now the attention becomes focused on next Saturday night when Macon Speedway toasts the dads with the Dear Ol’ Dad program. Drivers will be available for autographs before the racing. Following another terrific night of racing, the points standings will once again shift and the races for track champion will get more intense.
