New Egypt,NJ 6-3-04
By Brett Emrick
Jimmy Mars of Elk Mound,WI captured his third Stacker2® Xtreme DirtCar Series sanctioned main event of the season Thursday taking the $10,000 to win “Jersey Jackpot 50” at New Egypt Speedway in New Egypt,NJ. Driving the Stacker2®/Heeg Well Drilling/Deppe Enterprises No. 28M Jimmy Mars Racing MasterSbilt/Pro Power Racing Chevrolet, Mars traded the lead with Earl Pearson Jr. throughout the early stages of the caution filled event until taking the lead for good on lap 21. Once in front, Mars used every inch of the semi-banked “D” shaped ½ mile to keep his car front taking the checkered flag one car length in front of 11th starting Brian Birkhofer. Pearson Jr. finished third with Ray Cook fourth and 12th starting Darren Miller fifth. Completing the top ten were 13th starting Jeep Van Wormer in sixth trailed by Matt Miller then Steve Shaver, 14th starting Jim Bernheisel and Dan Stone.
“Man, what a race”, stated the Mars in victory circle. “Earl and I had a great race going through the early stages of the race. Then, late in the race I could hear someone but I didn’t know who it was until Brian showed me the nose of his car. It was a tough race. I hated to see all those early race cautions. I’ve never raced this far east before but the track surface reminds me of a lot of places back in the Midwest, black gumbo. I really hope the fans enjoyed the race. This is a great facility. I hope we can come back”.
Mars and Pearson Jr. brought the field to the green flag with Mars inching ahead of Pearson Jr. as the pair exited turn two. But, before lap 1 could be finished Eddie Carrier Jr. and Stone got together in turn four bringing out the first of several cautions. Carrier Jr. returned to the race several laps later after making repairs while Stone rejoined the race. The second attempt at a start saw Matt Miller spin in turn two after contact resulting in a massive pile-up which involved nearly 10 cars. Both Sean Cosgrove and Scott Haus suffered enough damage to their cars they were done for the race.
The third time at getting a lap in was the charm with Pearson Jr. getting the upper-hand as he led Mars, Cook, Matt Miller and Shane Clanton at the end of the first lap. But, “yellowitis” struck again before lap 2 could be recorded as Clanton spun in turn collecting several cars. Clanton and Billy Drake both retired from the race with damage to their cars. With Clanton sidelined due to the crash, Donnie Moran moved into fifth spot for the restart. Caution would wave again on lap 3 when Steve Casebolt rolled to a stop with front-end damage to his car sending him out of the race.
Pearson Jr. brought the single-file field for the restart to the green flag and this time some green flag racing took place. Mars stayed right with Pearson Jr. racing side by side until grabbing the lead on lap 5. Moran moved past Matt Miller one lap later to take fourth and on lap 8 Birkhofer snared the fifth spot from Matt Miller and two laps later grabbed fourth from Moran. Mars entered lapped traffic on lap 12 which allowed Pearson Jr., Cook, Birkhofer and Moran to close. Mars did an expert job of getting through the backmarkers to separate himself from his pursuers. Birkhofer made a strong move on lap 13 to snare third from Cook and put the pressure on Pearson Jr. But, Cook came right back the next lap to take the third spot back from Birkhofer. The intense action would be slowed though on lap 17 when D.J. Troutman rolled to a stop on the frontchute.
With no lapped traffic between Mars and Pearson Jr. for the restart, Pearson Jr. stuck with Mars while Birkhofer again grabbed third from Cook on lap 18. The caution would again wave one lap later as Frank Cozze and Stone tangled in turn two. Pearson Jr. shot past Mars exiting turn two to reassume the lead on lap 19 with Mars coming right back to regain the lead the next circuit. Darren Miller was now into the top five at lap 22 while Mars began to open some distance on Pearson Jr. The caution would wave again on lap 24 when Cozze spun in turn one.
The top 10 at this point had Mars with the lead over Pearson Jr., Birkhofer, Cook and D. Miller with Van Wormer sixth trailed by M. Miller, Bernheisel, Chuck Schutz and Shaver. Lap 27 saw the yellow out again when Billy Pauch rolled to a stop in turn two and the yellow was out again at lap 28 for debris.
The race would remain green for the final 22 laps which saw several changes among the top 5 runners. Cook regained the third spot on lap 29 with Birkhofer taking it right back the next lap. D. Miller and Van Wormer both shot past Cook the next lap but Cook fought his way back into fourth one lap later. Mars had opened up a five car advantage by lap 35 leaving Pearson Jr. to battle with Birkhofer for the runner-up spot. Birkhofer worked his way past Pearson Jr. for second on lap 39 and set sail for Mars. Meanwhile, the battle between D. Miller and Cook continued. Cook and D. Miller traded the fourth spot three times in the final 8 circuits while Birkhofer moved in on Mars. With 2 laps to go Birkhofer was three cars lengths behind Mars but could only whittle Mars’ lead to a car length when the checkered flag fell.
The $42,000 event, the first ever DirtCar event in the State of New Jersey, attracted 29 drivers with Pearson Jr. establishing a new track record in RINGERS GLOVES Time Trials with a fast lap of 16.486 seconds. Heat race wins fell to Mars, Cook and M. Miller while Troutman copped the “B” Main and Mars scored the YJ STINGER EXTREME ENERGY DRINK dash.
