Tim McCreadie readily admits he’d rather be lucky than good and that in a sense is what happened Friday at Twin Cities Raceway Park in North Vernon,IN when the World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series sanctioned the $10,000 to win “Indiana Labor Day Classic 50”. Starting third aboard the Sweetners Plus/A&C Speedworld No. 39 Ann and Carl Myers Rocket Chassis/C&C Performance Chevrolet Monte Carlo, “T-Mac” grabbed second from Greg Johnson on lap 5 and then set off for race leader Billy Moyer. After a lap 30 caution McCreadie pulled alongside of Moyer racing side by side with the point leader for two laps until another caution waved at lap 32. Again, McCreadie pulled alongside of Moyer on the restart racing side by side for a lap until grabbing the lead exiting turn four to become the races new leader. Seven laps later Moyer rolled to a stop with a flat right rear tire.

McCreadie then held off a hard charge by 12th starting Chub Frank by 1.130 seconds for his seventh trip of the season to the YJ Stinger® Victory Lane. Steve Francis rode home third and regained the World of Outlaws Stacker 2® Late Model Series Championship points lead by six points over Moyer heading into Sunday’s event at Tri-City Speedway in Franklin,PA. Rick Eckert finished fourth with 13th starting Dale McDowell fifth. Sixth through tenth fell to 18th starting Clint Smith followed by Shane Clanton, Moyer, Josh Richards and Brian Shirley.

When asked if he could’ve caught the leader without Moyer having the tire go down McCreadie stated, “Nah. I don’t know. We were a little softer on tires than he was and when we had that long green flag run he got away. That’s probably the story. On a long run he was gonna’ get away and on a short run we could run right with him. I saw his tire starting to go flat and I thought he might pull up but then again I knew he wouldn’t. If the race would’ve stayed green for a long time I think he might’ve been ok. Having those yellows hurt him. I mean, we’re having a flat right now here in victory lane. We’ve just been lucky. Earlier today we were talking that it seems we’ve got a great car and we’ve jelled into a great team. Now the luck is coming our way. You have that combination working for you and it makes you hard to beat. To be able to run as well as we have with these guys, we just consider ourselves very lucky to be able to do what we have this year.”

Frank seemed to be satisfied with his second place run driving the Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance No. 1* Chub Frank Racing Rocket Chassis/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Monte Carlo stating, “We were on a little bit harder of tires and the track started to slow down a bit to where we could maneuver around a little bit and start passing. The car would go on the bottom but it really worked good when we ran the top. When I had to pass someone on the bottom it took a little longer but we were real fast on the top.”

Third place finisher Francis was realistic in his statement when he was asked for a comment about regaining the points lead. Said the driver of the MOPAR Performance Parts/Valvoline/Freeport Recycling No. 15 Steve Francis Racing Rocket Chassis/Stanton Racing Engines Dodge Intrepid R/T, “It’s far from over. Timmy and Chub are the two guys behind me and they finished one and two tonight. I mean, four of the top five in points finished in the top five tonight. There’s a handful of races left so it’s far from over.”

Moyer and Greg Johnson brought the field to the green flag with Moyer getting the break into turn one. Moyer led lap one with Johnson second, McCreadie third, Clanton fourth and Don O’Neal fifth. O’Neal grabbed the fourth spot on lap 4 as Moyer exteneded his lead to five car lengths over Johnson. Before lap 5 could be recorded the yellow was flying when Darrell Lanigan and Tim Prince got together in turn four. The top ten restart order was Moyer, Johnson, McCreadie, O’Neal and Clanton trailed by Francis, Eckert, Mike Marlar, Steve Casebolt and Scott James.

McCreadie dispatched Johnson to third on lap 5 with Francis taking fifth from Clanton on the next circuit with O’Neal taking third from Johnson on lap 7. Moyer had opened up a huge lead when he entered lapped traffic at lap 15. Francis continued to work his forward taking fourth from Johnson on lap 18. With 25 laps down, Moyer held a seven car margin on McCreadie with O’Neal third, Francis fourth and Eckert fifth then Johnson, Clanton, Frank, Marlar and McDowell.

The caution waved at lap 30 for debris and then things got interesting. Moyer’s car didn’t take off like it had before allowing McCreadie to drop to the bottom and race Moyer side by side for the lead for two consectutive laps before Shawn Negangard spun in turn four on lap 32 to bring out the yellow. Again on the restart, McCreadie pulled alongside of Moyer racing him clean for a lap. Exiting turn four to complete lap 33, Moyer’s car skated up the track giving McCreadie the lead which he would never lose. The deflating tire on Moyer’s car allowed O’Neal to take second on lap 37 and by lap 41 Moyer had fallen to tenth before rolling to a stop with the flat tire. The restart order had McCreadie in front with O’Neal second, Francis third, Frank fourth and Eckert fifth with McDowell, Clanton, Richards, Smith and Shirley sitting sixth through tenth.

McCreadie pulled away from O’Neal once the race resumed. Frank blasted past Francis for third at lap 44 and racing down the backstretch began to reel in O’Neal. Entering turn three, contact between Frank and O’Neal sent O’Neal spinning as cars went every way to avoid O’Neal. O’Neal kept his car moving but unfortunately lost tempers saw O’Neal retaliate during caution by ramming Frank’s car. That resulted in O’Neal being disqualified from further action. That prompted a two individuals in the partisan crowd to toss debris onto the speedway which resulted in they’re being tossed from the speedway grounds by track security.

According to Frank the contact was not intentional. “O’Neal had been running the bottom of the race track for three to four laps as I was coming up on him”, said Frank after the event. “I don’t know if his guy’s told him to go up, I don’t see how they could’ve done that, but he pulled up into the top groove as we entered three. Hell, I was going 40mph faster than he was at that point. I went to pass him and just clipped his right rear quarter-panel. I couldn’t really go out any further or I would’ve been over the cushion and into the wall. I feel bad about it but it was just a racing deal. If I would’ve gone in there with the intentions to take him out, I would’ve hit the left rear quarter-panel not the right rear quarter-panel.”

Once calm was restored and the race resumed McCreadie kept Frank at bay to score the win.

The $45,000 purse event attracted 28 drivers to the high-banked 3/8ths mile track with Clanton earning the fastest time in time trials with a quick lap of 14.387 seconds at an average speed of 93.835mph. Heat race wins fell to Clanton, Moyer, Johnson and McCreadie with Billy Decker copping the “B” Main and Moyer the dash.

NOTES: A very large crowd was on hand for the running of the “Indiana Labor Day Classic 50” and the crowd definitely did they’re part. One dollar of every gate admission was donated to the North Vernon,IN chapter of the American Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief. Donations receptacles were located at the concessions stands for additional donations and the WoO Stacker 2® Late Model Series drivers went through the grandstands during a break with their helmets collecting $1,356.29 in cash donations from the crowd. With the crowd donations, the one dollar of every gate admission and the collections from the donation receptacles, over $3,000 was raised to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

It was a somewhat quiet night at the race track as the spectator grandstand PA system failed to operate throughout the night. The system would work for a few seconds and then not work. Track personnel worked throughout the program to remedy the situation but could never fix the problem. The only announcements of the night were driver introductions and victory lane interviews after a temporary PA system was set-up.

Heat # 1: Fast qualifier Clanton got the break and lead all the way though he did have pressure from Casebolt over the last two laps. Eckert blasted into third from his fifth starting spot on lap 4 when Jacobsen who was running third slipped in turn one allowing Eckert and McDowell to move past.

Heat # 2: Moyer led all the way. The best race was for the fourth and final transfer as Billy Decker felt pressure from Brian Shirley from lap 5 on. Decker hopped the cushion in turn two while working lap 9 allowing Shirley to slip past for the the final spot.

Heat # 3: A strange race for sure. C. Smith broke out in front at the drop of the green flag followed by Johnson. James battled Carney for the third spot taking it on lap 3. Marlar got past Carney for the fourth spot the next circuit. As the field worked lap 6, Carney spun in turn two collecting Blankenship who fell from the race with front end damage. During the caution period, C. Smith suffered a flat tire forcing him pitside. C. Smith returned to the race before the green waved but couldn’t make his way back into a transfer spot. Johnson went on for the win.

Heat # 4: Front row starters McCreadie and Francis thrilled the crowd racing the entire 10 lap qualifier nearly side by side. McCreadie held a slight advantage on Francis exiting the turns as Francis pulled alongside in the straightaways. McCreadie held on for a half car length margin at the finish.

“B” Main # 1: Jacobsen and Decker jumped off the front row racing side by side for the first two laps. Decker then used the high groove to take the lead which he would never give up. Jacobsen, Barnett and C. Smith had a great battle going behind the leader. C. Smith used the low line to work his way into second with Barnett falling into third. Jacobsen then had to battle with Negangard only to lose the spot two laps from the finish.

Dash: Johnson seemed destined to win the pole for the main event until hopping the cushion exiting turn four heading for the white flag. That’s all Moyer needed as he shot past on the low side to grab the lead and the win.
