Any ‘opening night’ program at any, weekly race track can almost always come up with the ‘opening night blues’. It’s common. What the drivers and track owners had to do on this race night was anything but common.

What promoters Earl and Susan Walls had to experience to live up to it’s well known slogan…”if there’s a way to run, we race at CMS”… was a hard battle all the way. Rains all week kept the lights from going up on the new poles until the day of the event and made the race track’s surface look more like a cow pond thasn a speed-plant by Saturday’s race-day morning. And the fans and drivers participating in the “KOKO-J-98.5/ Sunoco Race Fuels Season Opener” knew it was not the norm for the ‘Fast-Action Excitement’, 1/3rd mile, high-banked clay oval.

All in all, however, after the huge effort to make it possible to run, the initial race night for 2003 at CMS turned into an outstanding, 19 race affair.

With the large contingency of rabid Concordia fans on hand, as always, the grandstands ‘rocked’ while they watched their hometown combatants run up front. Concordia’s ‘Movin’ Dave Meyer led the race off and on from start to finish in the 40 lap, Mighty Modified main event for the win and $700 in purse lucre. But it was anything but a Saturday night cruise.

Trying for his 323rd career victory, Bonner Springs, Kansan Tom Charles was all over Meyer’s rear bumper, passed him three different times and with a major car breakdown with but half a lap to go in the 20 lap event, Charles was lucky to finish with $600 in second place. Trying to pass Charles at the finish line but having to settle for third, and $500, was Sedalia’s Terry ‘the terminator’ Schultz, fourth was well earned by “Mr. Experience” Bobby Layne for a $450 payday and the $400 fifth place was garnered by Jason ‘trouble’ Thompson.

Fifteen-time CMS Street Stock champ, carded by many as ‘the king of Street Stockers’ John ‘the boomer’ Brooks from Warrensburg, made the tricky track look easy and captured the 15 circuit main event. Following Brooks across the checkers were Clayton Campbell, young ace Jesse Wheeler, Johnny Ebert and Chris Akers in that order.

For a long time in the 60’s and 70’s as a top, full-bore sprint car pilot, Kenny Potter from Raymore, decided to ‘un-retire’ and start running with the WOFC Sprint Cars at CMS last season. He knocked down six big wins, then turned around Saturday night to do start a new string this season. Cousin Kelly Potter was second, new driver Artie Lett shocked the tried and true open-wheel fans with a charging third, fourth was found by Joe Chevalier while his dad Dan, took fifth.

Last season Warrensburg’s Marc ’the dweeb’ Carter decided to add a Limited Late Model to his field of race cars. He started out slowly on the move up the ladder, but couldn’t score a win until the last few weeks of 2002. This time, his LLM win started right off the bat. Finishing second through fifth in the 15 lap LLM main were Kevin ’the kid’ Coyne, Ryan Lovercamp, Garry Billings, Jr. and David Finkemeier.

Hosting this coming Saturday night’s program will be Miller Beer for the “Miller Lite Race Night #1”.

A much more detailed and extended story of this event with accompanying pictures will be released later today (Sunday).
