Junction City, KY-July 10, 2009- Ponderosa Speedway returned to action after a seven week layoff and presented the 14th Annual Pete Abell Memorial for the O’Reilly Battle of the Bluegrass Super Late Models and Mike Marlar of Winfield, TN picked up $3,000 for his efforts in the 40 lap event. Other feature winners for the evening included Randy Turpin of Lebanon, KY in Clayton Homes Modifieds, Todd Coffman of Junction City, KY in Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Models, and Troy Scott of Hustonville, KY in Bob Allen Motor Mall Sportsman.

David Webb would take the lead at the start of the Pete Abell Memorial event, followed by Dustin Neat, Mike Jewell, Mike Marlar, and Eddie Carrier, Jr. Marlar would take third on lap 2 and move past Neat for second on lap 3. Webb and Marlar would settle into a battle for the race lead, with Marlar grabbing the top spot on lap 8 off of turn two. Justin Rattliff would battle with Eddie Carrier, Jr. for fifth and take the five slot on lap 10. Marlar would start working slower traffic on lap 11, while Neat and Jewell would battle for third on lap 12. The first caution would wave on lap 14 when Eric Wells and Jimmy Crabtree would tangle on the backchute and during the caution, tempers would flare among pit crew members in the hot pit area and Wells would be parked for the evening and Crabtree would be disqualified. Back underway, Marlar would hold the point, with Webb in second, Neat third, Rattliff would go to fourth, with Jewell in fifth. Neat and Rattliff would begin to wage a battle for the third spot until lap 21 when the battle would produce some contact between the duo, with Neat’s machine slowing in turn one with suspension damage. With action resuming the front five would be Marlar, Webb, Rattliff, Jewell, and Carrier, Jr. Carrier, Jr. would begin to mount a charge on Jewell for fourth and grab the spot on lap 24. Marlar would begin to stretch his lead over Webb to as much as 10 car lengths at times as the leader would again begin to work slower traffic on lap 30. The front five would remain the same until the final caution of the race flew on lap 34 as Buzz Williams looped his mount in turn four. With less than 10 laps remaining, a single-file restart would be in order, allowing Marlar to quickly scoot away from the field. Carrier, Jr. would continue his charge and would drive past Rattliff for third on lap 35 as Jewell began to pressure Rattliff as well and would eventually take the fourth position on lap 37. Marlar would remain unchallenged at the point and score the race win aboard his Doors-N-More/DWT Racing/G&R Hydraulics/Marlar and Sons Auto Dismantling/Performance Battery/Stephens Trucking/Wayne Bowen Racing Supply sponsored #157 Rocket Chassis, Estes Race Engines powered machine, followed by Webb, Carrier, Jr., Jewell, and Rattliff. The remainder of the top ten would be Jason Keltner, Whitney McQueary, Michael Chilton, Victor Lee, and Bobby Wolter, Jr. In preliminary action, Eddie Carrier, Jr. was the Racing Optics Top Qualifier among 26 entries with a lap of 14.201 seconds. Heat race checkered flags went to Neat in Wayne Bowen Racing Supply heat one, Webb in Graphic Impressions heat two, and Jewell in C.J. Rayburn Race Cars heat three. Bobby Wolter, Jr. would score the B-Main win, with series provisionals going to Jamie Ferguson and Bobby Carrier, Jr., while Jason Hinkle earned the track provisional.
In the 20 lap Clayton Homes Modified main event, Benji Lee would lead the first 13 laps of the event until his machine pulled up slow with mechanical problems on lap 14, handing the race lead over to Randy Turpin. Turpin would stave off the challenges of Jason Wheatley over the final third of the race to score his first feature win of the season at Ponderosa Speedway in the Randy and Josh Turpin owned Cedarwood Restaurant/Smith Service Company/Thomas and Son Trucking/All About You Hair and Nails/John Cox Martial Arts/Bell Machine and Fabrication/ Williams Repair/Dr. Rod Coxon Chiropractic/Kay’s Barber Shop sponsored #99 Bandit Race Cars, Dale Meers Race Engines powered mount. Rounding out the top ten were Tommy Gregory, Rocky Wilson, Todd Noel, Shane McKenney, and Tommy Carlton. Fourteen entries would see Turpin as top qualifier at 15.484 seconds, with Lee winning the dash, while Curtsinger won the heat.
The 20 lap Kentucky National Guard Pro Late Model feature would be the Todd Coffman show as the defending Pro Late Model track champion would lead from the drop of the green flag until the checkered flag waved on this feature event. Coffman’s winning effort came in the seat of his Coffman’s Photography, King Clean, Premier Limosine/The Muffler Shop/The Hackers/ Harrod Farms/Wayne Bowen Racing Supply/Woodrum Farms sponsored #35 C.J. Rayburn Race Cars, GM 604 Performance Crate powered mount. P.J. Feistritzer would claim runner-up honors, followed by Zane Morgan, Jeremy Hines, and Logan Whitis. Completing the top ten were Clarence Belcher, Jeff Johnson, Mike Covington, John Mulligan, and Chase McWhorter. Twelve entries would see heat race victories go to McWhorter and Coffman.
The 15 lap Bob Allen Motor Mall Sportsman main event would be a dandy as Logan Preston held on to the lead early on after a battle with Darrell Baker before mechanical issues sidelined Preston by lap 8. Baker would inherit the race only to lose it to eventual winner Troy Scott with 6 laps to go and Scott would hold on to pick up his first win of the season in his Chiffton Steel/Cookie Monster Power Plants/Scott Lawn Seeding/Grant Motorsports sponsored #T20 Chevy Monte Carlo. Bartley Grant would finish a close second, followed by Baker, Rick King, and Gerald Haynes, Jr. The remainder of the top ten would be Donnie Sullivan, Brian Elder, Shelburn Meeks, Johnny King, and Tim Cummings.
