Money?

I am brand new to this and I would love to race. I was just wondering how much money does it take to keep these cars running? How much money does it take to get started in sportsman? I don't live far from I-55 so that is where I hope to race. How much money would it take to build a sportsman?

Thank you for all your help

depends on how well your do-it-youself skills are if you can't weld or don't have access to a welder or can't build your own motor don't even bother but just a heads up I have built a 340 mopar and have about 15,000 in the motor and it is not in the car yet hell the carb cost me 1,200 alone, cause if you think you can run (remember 2-brl only) a 500 cfm holly out of the box you are wasting your time . Tires only last about 2 races and are 100 each

But I might know where youcan get a frame for about 350-450 I think it is a rolling chasis

That price was a little outragous that Kick 4 gave you on the motor. You don't need a $15,000 motor for a sportsman. Plus if you have $15,000 in a sportsman motor you aren't legal. There is no way you can spend that on a sportsman more with our rules.

I have been racing 7 years now and just started to be competitive about 2 years ago. I have a almost brand new car right now (its a 2002 Brent Thompson Chassis). I built this car brand new 2 winters ago. I had pretty much nothing to start with cause i sold all my older stuff. So pretty much 90% of everything that went on my car was brand new. I found a few odds and in's that can be used parts that i bought and i did. I stuck almost $11,000 in it. That price is of it totally complete. From nothing but a frame to a complete car ready to put on the trailer and go to the track. I am currently running 6th in points have 8 wins so far this year counting a feature at Belleville. You really have to have you stuff together to run competetively at pevely though. It won't cost a whole lot more than this but alittle more. For that $15,000 motor kick 4 is building you can build a top of the line nothing but the best sportsman car. If you have any other questions feel free to ask and i will help the best that i can. You may also email me at smaldirt128@aol.com. Good Luck whenever you get into racing.

try a ministock, you can find them for around $1500 ready to run.they have low mantinence,my tires are 3 years old, change oil every other race.growing class and the pay is great, usually $150 to win AND LAST YEARS POINT CHAP. RECEIVED $600,I HAVE ONE FOR SELL IF YOU ARE INTRESTED,pm me,shannon-good thung about these vehicles you learn to drive before getting into a higher horsepower racer

1. I am not wrong about any price
2. I don't build small block sh*tys
3. Mopar parts ain't cheap
4. If you want to run up front It costs money
5. SPEED COSTS MONEY HOW FAST DO YOU WANT TO GO

I am not trying to start a fight just stating a point

1. Your nuts for spending $15,000 in a sporstman motor. Build a UMP modified for that price and damn near a late model motor.

2. SBC motors seem to do quite well.....I mean only about 95% of all the drivers out there run them so they must not be too bad huh? I will give mopar credit cause they do have really good motors but like i said $15,000 for a sportsman motor.

3. Mopar ain't cheap i know that but please refer to the end of #2 :D :D

4. I run up front in the sportsman class and i can build 3 or 4 motors for the price of your one.

5. Speed does cost money but the real saying is money can't buy a good driver. You can build an awsome car and motor but can you drive it good?????

I am just like you......I am not trying to stir up anything but i don't want someone thinking that it is gunna cost them $15,000 for just a motor for a sportsman car. Thats rediclious....sorry.....but really if you are gunna stick that much money in a sportsman car why not just go modified? You only run for anywhere from $200-$300 to win and the rest of the payout ****s not to mention that you can only run a select few tracks with these area sportsmans as to where you can almost run every track with a modified. Well anyways enough is enough have a good weekend everyone.

I AGREE WITH SMALDIRT28.

MOST OF THE GUYS I KNOW, THAT HAVE BUILT NEW CARS FROM THE GROUND UP SPEND ABOUT $13-15 GRAND. THATS DOING IT RIGHT.

IF YOU HAVE YOUR HEART SET ON A SPORTSMAN CAR, MY SUGGESTION TO YOU WOULD BE BUY A USED CHASSIS. THAT WAY YOU'LL GET IN CHEAPER, NOT CHEAP, BUT CHEAPER.

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN, AND SOMETIMES YOU CAN RUN UP ON A GOOD DEAL. IF A GUY IS SELLING OUT OR WANTING TO UPGRADE HIS PROGRAM.

I DON'T THINK IT IS A WISE MOVE TO TRY AND START OUT WITH EVERYTHING BRAND NEW. BEING A BRAND NEW DRIVER YOU'RE GONNA TEAR SOME STUFF UP. IT GOES WITH THE TERRITORY. ALSO, YOU AREN'T SURE IF YOU WILL LIKE IT OR WANT TO KEEP DOING IT. SO, DON'T GET TOO DEEP IN UNTIL YOU'RE ARE SURE ITS SOMETHING YOU CAN AND WANT TO REALLY DO.

IF YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE IN AND OUTS OF DIRT RACING, I WOULD SUGGEST GOING INTO THE PITS DURING THE RACES. STRIKE UP A LITTLE CONVERSATION WITH SOME GUYS, AND SEE IF YOU CAN FIND SOMEONE WHO WOULDN'T MIND YOU HANGIN' OUT WITH THEM. ANOTHER WORDS, TRY TO GET INTO A PIT CREW. THEN YOU'LL BE ABLE TO LOOK, LISTEN, AND BE HANDS ON. THATS THE BEST WAY TO GET STARTED. YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE ANY TROUBLE FINDING SOMEBODY WHO WILL LET YOU CLEAN OFF MUD AND CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE ECT...

THATS WHAT I DID. I HELPED SEVERAL DIFFERENT TEAMS OVER THE YEARS, AND I LEARNED A LOT. I STILL DON'T KNOW ENOUGH. DIRT RACING IS A LOT MORE TECHNICAL THAN MOST BLEACHER BUMS REALIZE.

LIKE SMALDIRT28 SAID, YOU CAN SPEND A BOAT LOAD OF MONEY AND STILL NOT BE SUCCESSFUL. THERE IS A LOT OF THINGS TO LEARN BEFORE YOU'LL GET COMPETITIVE.

SORRY FOR THE NOVEL........:D
