MSD Ignition

When running MSD ignition setup, is altenator required? I've been told that you
need 13 volts for the system to perform properly.
We bought a car with MSD Ignition, electric fuelpump, tach and gauge lites,
1,, 12 volt battery, but no altenator. dont seem to me as if this will work!
...any help on this? .. Thanks in advance.

It will work, you have to stay on the battery to keep it charged. Keep an eye on the fuel pressure, the pump will keep working but it will slow down.

it will work,we run an msd 6t box on my late model with no alternator,i keep it on the battery charger while in the pits at the races..

Make sure you have a good battery!!!! and keep it charged. Make sure battery has enough capacity How many amps does that fuel pump pull? An MSD pulls 1 amp per 1,000 rpm so 7grand the MSD alone is using is 7 amps. MSD is designed to produce full power sparks at 10 volts. The MSD output power is regulated, so 14 volts from an alternator will not increase the output of you MSD.

Just keep an eye on your battery. For 25 lap races you should good.

Heres a question for you all.....Where should you get the power from for an MSD distributor? Should you get it directly from the battery? We've heard that your not supposed to get your power from behind the solenoid because the alternator fluctuates too much for the msd to function correctly. So we ran a power wire right from the battery to the dash, through a 50 amp switch and directly to the distributor. Any opinions on how they should be run?

I use a master switch..one of those lagre ones. Run straight batt power to one side..msd power to the other side. Never have had a problem. And yea..gotta watch an alternator...some..when idling..will actually draw more amps than putting out..when you are idling..like packing the track in..yellows..ect. I just use a good deep cycle marine battery..keep her chaged..and that will be all you need.

Ok...while were on the topic of msd's.....does heat have any effect on the chips you run in the distributors? Because were running a new set of headers this year that wrap around and dump out just on the right side of the tranny. Is there a possibility that heat can effect the chip?

I run mine..on top of the decking..to get air to it. Yes..heat can affect the msd itself in general.

Thanks for all the replies,,,lots of help.. we put a manual fuel pump on it,
went to TCS,,kept the battery charged & it did just fine. we are going to go with a deep cycle marine battery and run this thing.... see it at TCS once a
month, at least, with the young gun ,''JAKE ROBBINS'' at the wheel. But watch
out for him on the track,he's just a rookie you know.
Thanks again,,I almost put an altanator on it.

Cool..he is doing a fine job. Yea..he spun out..who hasnt? Dont know how far you can push a car till you do that. And..its fast. Good luck to you guys this year.
