After a week’s worth of Mother Nature, it was time to get the race cars out and go racing. The track was not in the best of shape but the racing turned out fairly go with several new cars in the pits.
In the UMP Late Model division, there were 13 cars on hand for the racing. Kyle Monroe set fast time for the night at 13. 802. The format for the Late Models was changed beginning Saturday night. There is no longer a dash for the six fastest cars, but rather the fast six start on the front rows of the heats and the heat results determine the dash lineup. In the first heat, Bobby Melvin won with Billy Faust, Kyle Monroe, Bruce Unterbrink, Jimmy Burwell, Randy McMahon and Jame Burrell trailing. In the second heat, Rodney Melvin got the win followed by Brad Loddeke, Tony Boyles, Clint Bex, Charlie Schaefer, and Darrell Spiller. The dash went to B. Melvin followed by R. Melvin, Faust, Monroe, Loddeke and Boyles.
In the 25-lap feature, the Melvin brothers started on the front row. At the dropping of the green flag, B. Melvin got the jump followed by R. Melvin. The pair ran nose to tail the entire 25 green laps. Faust stayed within striking distance, but could not get close enough to be a challenge. The only movement forward was by Burwell, who started ninth and moved though the field to finish in the top five.
Lap after lap, the two Melvins ran on the low side of the track each trying to avoid the ruts in the corners. Rodney could not over come Bobby and Bobby went on to beat his brother. Finishing third was Faust followed by Monroe and Burwell to complete the top five.
In the UMP Modified class, there were 21cars in the pits. Brent Mullins set fast time at 15.285. In the dash, Chad Kinder took the win over Mary Lindeman, Mark Ford, Kevin Cole, Mullins and Brad Withershaw. In the second heat, Matt Mevert got the victory over Jay Hughes, Steve Cole, J.W. Moore, Billy Lewis, Glenn Stephens, and John Rednour. The third heat saw the win go to Steve Picou followed by Mike Brimley, Mike Higginson, Wayne Downing, Chris Baker, Tim Lewis, Rick Fuller and Beadles. The semi went to Fuller over Stephens, B. Lewis, and Beadles.
The 20-lap feature started with Kinder and Lindeman on the front row. Kinder took the lead and never looked back. The race looked like it could be a repeat of the Late Model feature, but that did not happen. On the fourth lap which appeared to be a big problem as each time the lap restarted something happened to restart the race again and again and again. The first stoppage was for Mullins, who had something go wrong with his car and he could not put off out the gate. The infield was unusable as it was a lake from all the water the fell during the week. The running order was Kinder, Ford, Lindeman, Mevert and Brimley at this point in the race. Each time the race was restarted something would happened to not get a lap in. Finally after several attempts the race got under way.
Seventh starting Mevert was on the move as he was into fourth by lap 4. The battle would turn out to be between the two 22 cars as Mevert got into second place, but could not over take Kinder. The two cars ran a close first and second for most of the race. Kinder went on for the win followed by Mevert, Ford, Lindeman and K. Cole to complete the top five.
In the Steel Block Late Model class, there were 19 cars on hand. Chris Winters set fast time. In the dash, Jeff Sloan won over Chris Winters, Shane Cockrum, Mike Beasley, Ray Emling, and Chad Burkes. In the first heat, Don Lamacchia got the win over Doug Mandrell, Tom Huite, Tommy Krankel, Louie Baker, Matthew Ragland, Richard Baker, and Mike Galloway. In the second heat, the win went to Rick Isaacs followed by John Terry, Don White, Kevin Ferguson, Scott Ferguson and Chuck Still. The semi went to Rodney Melvin, in Still’s car, with L. Baker, S. Ferguson, and Galloway making the feature.
In the 20 lap feature, Sloan and Winters sat on the front row. Sloan took the lead on the start of the race and would hold it the entire race. Winters tried to take command but could never get the right chance to over haul the #4 car. The car on the move was the 5s that was driven by Rodney Melvin. Melvin started 15th and worked his way thought the field to finish third. Rounding out the top five were Emling and Lamacchia.
