Jason Frankel, Michael Long, Jeff Mueller and Jim Powell all scored feature event wins at Quincy Raceways on Sunday, July 20 during Miller Lite/Mississippi Belle Distributing Night at the Races.
The big event for the evening was the Tri-State Triple R Performance Engines Sunoco IMCA Stock Car Shootout with twenty one of the best stock car drivers on hand to do battle for the $1000 top prize. Jeff Mueller drew the number one chip to start the thirty five lap main event and it spelled doom for the rest of the field as he jumped out to a decided advantage at the drop of the green flag. Mueller survived three restarts and pulled away from the field on each of them. Muller won the event by almost four and one half seconds but the battle was for real behind him throughout the field. Abe Huls took the runner up spot after a spirited battle with David Wietholder. Wietholder settled for third followed by Jason Cook in fourth. Cook started the main event in the tenth slot and pitted for a flat tire on the second lap. Cook worked his way back up through the field to get to the fourth spot which earned him a $100 Hard Charger Bonus from Tony Dunker Concrete Construction. Chris Wibbell finished in fifth which gives him a seven point advantage over Mueller in the battle for the first Triple R Performance Engines Sunoco IMCA Stock Car Track Championship. Wietholder, Cook and Doug Huls were the heat race winners.
Jason Frankel borrowed a car from Robbie Warner to compete in the nights Budweiser J&J Steel IMCA Late Model division and it paid off for him. Frankel started the feature event in the fifth row and took the lead away from Kevin Tomlinson on the thirteenth lap and pulled to a comfortable lead over almost a half a lap but Frankel was going to have to battle for the win as Mark Burgtorf blasted through the field in the later laps. Burgtorf got to second on the eighteenth lap and steadily worked his high groove magic to catch up to Frankel on the twenty eighth lap. Burgtorf banged into the cushion too hard in turn three on that lap and it was all Frankel need to stay at the front of the field and take the checkered flag by less than a half second over Burgtorf in second. Kevin Tomlinson held on for third followed by Denny Woodworth in fourth and Nick Ingalls in fifth. Jerry Weisenberger and Woodworth were the heat race winners with Burgtorf scoring the checkered flag in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash. Frankel now holds a twenty one point margin over Justin Reed in the Track Points Championship battle.
Michael Long may have skipped last weeks competition at Quincy in the Miller Lite Modified division but it sure did not slow him down any this week. Long started the main event in his usual sixth row spot and took only six laps to get to the lead. Michael used his Ford power to pull out to an eleven second lead at the end of the twenty lap main event which made a statement that he may have relinquished the points lead last week but he still had it fully under control on his way to his second Track Points Championship. Shawn Deering held off Tony Dunker to take the second spot followed by Dunker in third, Jeff Waterman in fourth and Steven DeLonjay in fifth. David Wietholder, Justin Reed and Robbie Reed were the heat race winners with Justin Reed taking home the hardware in the Advance Trading Trophy Dash. DeLonjay now holds a slim four point margin over Long and five over Tony Dunker in a three way battle in the points race.
Mike Wiley used his front row starting spot to his advantage in the Tim’s Machine Shop Hobby Stock main event and led for the first seven laps but mechanical problems put an end to his lead. Jim Powell took full advantage of Wiley’s problems as he led the final thirteen circuits to take his first feature win of the season. Wes Mayfield had to settle for the second spot followed by James Leffew in third, Aaron Brocksieck in fourth and Wiley in fifth. Leffew and Powell were the heat race winners.
Up next at Quincy Raceways on Sunday, July 27 will be Heetco Night at the Races with residents of Ursa, Marceline, Mendon, Lima, Loraine and Tioga getting the half price discount at the ticket booth with proper identification.
