CARTERSVILLE, GA – Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS and Scott Knowles of Lanett, AL, the point leaders in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West and East Regions respectively, took big wins on Saturday night during Week 21 competition, as the stretch drive has begun for the Regional titles.

Just a few more events are on the schedule in the East Region, and the West Region contenders will take a little more focus in a couple of weeks. With just six more weeks left in the season, drivers will be looking to net points by improving on their worst finishes in their best 16 finishes, and earning bonus points at NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt late Model Series National events.

Two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Keeton won the John Lightsey Memorial at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS on Saturday night in the Boland Performance Trak-Star to increase his point over Michael Arnold of Hattiesburg, MS to 22 points.

Keeton has 790 points based on his best 16 finishes with seven wins, 22 top five finishes, and 23 top ten finishes in 26 starts. Keeton has already picked up his 40 bonus points for competition in NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Touring events.

Including three double point races at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS on Sunday night, Hattiesburg Motorsports Park in Hattiesburg, MS on September 4, and South Mississippi Speedway in Gulfport, MS on September 5, there are a possible 14 more NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region events that can be run by drivers in the West Region.

For drivers looking to pick up bonus points at NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Touring events, there are six left on the schedule before the Weekly Racing Series season concludes on October 4. Five of the six National Touring events will take place in the next two weeks.

Whynot Motorsports Park will host a pair of events this Friday and Saturday nights, and there will be three National Touring events held over the Labor Day weekend. Central Mississippi Speedway in Winona, MS will host a National Touring event on Friday night, September 4 followed by a race at Columbus Speedway in Columbus, MS on Saturday night, September 5, and the weekend finale on Sunday night, September 6 at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS.

Arnold can still earn 20 bonus points by competing in National Touring events, which would put him to within two points of Keeton in the West Region point standings. Arnold has 768 points based on his best 16 finishes with nine wins, 25 top fives, and 31 top tens in 32 starts driving the Reynolds Racing Trak-Star.

Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS is in the third spot in the West Region standings with 750 points based on his best 16 finishes after five wins, 25 top fives, and 29 top tens driving the Billy Riels Racing GRT. Lee can still pick up 20 bonus points by competing in two NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Touring events.

Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS reached the 16 race mark on Saturday night and moved up to the fourth spot in the West Region standings with 747 points. Cooley has seven wins, 14 top fives, and 16 top tens driving the 78 Towing and Recovery Victory Circle. Cooley leads the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National point standings, and has earned his 40 Weekly Racing Series bonus points.

Kody Barber of Bogalusa, LA is fifth in the West Region standings with 736 points after seven wins, 13 top fives, and 20 top tens in 24 starts driving the Barber’s Hardware Mastersbilt. Barber can still earn ten bonus points.

NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region point leader Knowles picked up a big double-point win on Saturday night at Penton Raceway in Penton, AL driving the All-Star Graphics Warrior. That brought Knowles’ East Region point total up to 792 points based on his best 16 finishes.

Knowles has eight wins, 18 top fives, and 20 top tens in 22 starts. Knowles can still earn 20 bonus points for competing in National Touring events, and once he earns those points, he can trim the number of drivers with a mathematical chance to challenge him for the East Region title to just three other drivers.

Including a double-points race at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL in August 29, there are just six possible East Region events that drivers can compete in before the season ends on October 4.

If Knowles picks up his 20 bonus points, only Larry Harrod of Plains, GA, Montana Dudley of Phenix City, AL, and the defending NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Champion Adam Martin of Talladega, AL can battle with Knowles for the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Championship.

The East Region scenario shows if Knowles wins out the rest of the season, he can earn a possible 830 points. Dudley can earn a possible 826 points by winning out and earning all of his bonus points, and Martin can earn a possible 824 points by season’s end. Harrod can max out with 820 points.

Knowles holds a 36-point lead over Harrod in the East Region points chase. Harrod has 756 points based on his best 16 finishes with seven wins, 15 top fives, and 16 top tens in 18 starts driving the Harrod Logging Scorpion. Harrod can still earn 30 bonus points by competing in three NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Touring events.

Dudley took the win on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track, and is third in the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS East Region standings with 746 points based on his best 16 finishes after two wins, 16 top fives, and 19 top tens in 22 starts driving The Racing Zone GRT. Dudley can also still earn 30 bonus points.

Terrance Nowell of Phenix City, AL is in the fourth spot of the East Region points chase with 728 points based on his best 16 finishes after one win, 15 top fives, and 16 top tens in 17 starts driving the Clarence’s Truck Repair GRT. Nowell can earn 20 bonus points and by netting points from his worst starts in his top 16 total, he can max his point count out at 808 at season’s end.

Martin reached the 16 race mark on Saturday night with 720 points and he still can earn 40 bonus points by competing in National Touring events. Martin has five wins and 13 top ten finishes driving the Martin Racing Barry Wright.

In other NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region action on Saturday night, Michael Santangelo of St. Rose, LA drove the Harahan Paint and Body Trak-Star to his third win of the season at Pike County Speedway in McComb, MS. Wesley Greene of Winona, MS drove the Greene Racing entry to his first win of the season at Central Mississippi Speedway.

Jason Deal of Copperhill, TN took his third NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region win of the season on Saturday night at Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, NC driving the Cougar Fireworks GRT.

Keeton and Santangelo gave Trak-Star Race Car built by Boland Performance of Cuba, AL their 42nd and 43rd NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series wins of the season to keep their streak alive with at least one win in each of the 21 weeks of competition this season, and the lead in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufacturers Challenge point standings.

The defending and two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufacturers Challenge Champion GRT Race Cars of Greenbrier, AR is second with 36 wins after Week 21 victories by Dudley and Deal. Mastersbilt Race Cars of Crothersville, IN is third with 23 wins.

Knowles gave Warrior Race Cars built by Goddard Performance of Knoxville, TN its 16th win of the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS season and they hold the fourth spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufacturers Challenge point standings. TNT Race Cars of Piney Flats, TN is fifth with eight wins, and C.J. Rayburn Race Cars of Whiteland, IN is sixth with one win.
