CARTERSVILLE, GA – Week 22 of the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series season saw the East Region championship scenario come into focus, as four drivers still have a mathematical opportunity to claim the title. Scott Knowles of Lanett, AL picked up 10 bonus points over the weekend, and now has a total of 802 points.

Knowles is now just 17 points away from clinching the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Championship. Knowles can still earn 10 more bonus points by competing in a NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Touring event between now and October 4.

There are still four NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Touring events on the schedule during that time frame, three this weekend at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, AL on Friday night, Columbus Speedway in Columbus, MS on Saturday night, and Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS on Sunday night. Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL will host a National Touring event on October 3.

Last Friday night, Knowles traveled to Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS to compete in the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National event, and picked up ten NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series bonus points to bring his total to 802. If Knowles competes in one of the three National events this weekend, he will have 812 points, and his magic number will be seven.

East Region drivers can compete in four more NeSmith Chevrolet WRS events according to the schedules posted on the East Region track’s web sites. Based on earning full points with car counts of 15 or more, Knowles can still net 18 more points if he wins out in four races. Knowles’ four lowest point events in his current best 16 total are a 44, and three 46s.

Larry Harrod of Plains, GA, the defending NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Champion Adam Martin of Talladega, AL, and Montana Dudley of Phenix City, AL are still in title contention, but will have to do some traveling and win their next four Weekly Racing Series East Region events to have a chance.

Harrod also made the trip to Whynot Motorsports Park last Friday night to pick up ten bonus points, and he is still eligible to earn 20 more bonus points. Harrod finished second on Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL to net eight points in that event. Harrod now has 774 points.

With the 20 points Harrod can still earn, he can also net 24 more points if he wins his next four events paying full points for a season total of 818. Harrod’s four lowest point events in his current best 16 total are two 42s and two 46s.

Martin scored a big win on Saturday night in the double points event at Talladega Short Track in the Martin Racing Barry Wright, his sixth win of the season, to move him up to the third spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region point standings.

Martin has a total of 760 points and can still earn 40 bonus points, but he will have to make all four National events available to do it, and bring his point total to 800.

If Martin goes to all three National events this weekend, he would have to sacrifice one of the four Weekly Racing Series events available to him, and give him just three events in which to net points. Martin can still net 18 points in three races with three 44s being his lowest point events in his current best 16 total. That would give him a season total of 818.

Dudley is still in mathematical contention for the East Region title, and is in the fourth spot in the standings with 758 points. Dudley can still earn 30 bonus points, and can net 20 points if he wins out with maximum points to tally 808 points. Dudley’s four lowest point event totals are two 44s and two 46s.

In other NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region action on Saturday night, 15-year-old Hunter Best of Greenback, TN picked up his fourth win of the season at Mountain Raceway Park in Maryville, TN driving the Robin Myrick Realty Executives Warrior.

Dana Eiland of Salem, AL drove the Andy’s Auto Parts GRT to his fifth win of the season at East Alabama Motor Speedway. Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, NC was rained out on Saturday night.

The championship battle in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region should be clearer after Week 23 competition, as there are still several drivers with a mathematical chance to win the title. According the West Region tracks’ web sites, there still ten point events available for West Region drivers to compete in before the season ends on October 4.

Current West Region point leader, two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS grabbed a big double points win on Sunday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway driving the Boland Performance Trak-Star. Keeton netted 16 points with the win, and now has a total of 806 points.

Michael Arnold of Hattiesburg, MS is second in the West Region standings with 788 points, picking up 20 bonus points over the weekend by competing at Whynot Motorsports Park. Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS is third in the West Region standings with 770 points, and also claimed 20 bonus points by competing in the National Touring event at Whynot Motorsports Park.

Eric Cooley of Fulton, MS finished third on Sunday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway, and netted 24 points to move him up to the fourth spot in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region standings with a total of 763 points. The top four drivers in the West Region standings have all earned their 40 bonus points available to them.

In NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region action on Friday night, Roger Witt of Desha, AR took his first win of the season at Batesville Motor Speedway in Batesville, AR driving the Punisher Race Products GRT.

Keeton’s win extended Trak-Star Race Car’s winning streak to each of the 22 weeks of NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series competition. Trak-Star Race Cars built by Boland Performance of Cuba, AL leads the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufacturers Challenge standings with 44 total wins.

Defending and three-time NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufacturers Challenge Champion GRT Race Cars of Greenbrier, AR is second with 38 wins, with two coming over the weekend from Eiland and Witt.

Mastersbilt Race Cars of Crothersville, IN is third with 23 wins, and Best gave Warrior Race Cars built by Goddard Performance of Knoxville, TN its 17th win of the season to hold down the fourth spot. TNT Race Cars of Piney Flats, TN is fifth with eight wins, and C.J. Rayburn Race Cars of Whiteland, IN is sixth with one win.
