CARTERSVILLE, GA – Week 21 of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series season marks the beginning of the “stretch drive” for the West and East Region Championships. The majority of the drivers in title contention have reached the 16 race mark and are currently trying to net points to improve their Event Point Averages.

There are seven events on the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Week 21 schedule with four races in the West Region and three races in the East Region, including one Double-Point event.

Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS will host the $1,000-to-win John Lightsey Memorial on Saturday night. The late John Lightsey was a well-known carburetor specialist that worked with many of Mississippi’s top drivers. The race will also serve as a tune-up event for the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Touring races at WMP on August 28 and 29.

The NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Tour will be in action at Whynot Motorsports Park on Friday night, August 28 with a 40-lap $2,000-to-win main event, and on Saturday night, August 29 with a 50-lap $2,500-to-win big show. The two races will be Rounds 16 and 17 of the 2009 NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS season.

The series will be bringing the “Ride For Life” two-seater race car to WMP on August 29 where fans can bid for rides with their favorite driver to benefit the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Central Mississippi Speedway in Winona, MS will return to NeSmith Chevrolet WRS West Region action on Saturday night after being off for several weeks. Other NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Saturday night events will be held at South Mississippi Speedway in Gulfport, MS, and Pike County Speedway in McComb, MS.

Penton Raceway in Penton, AL will host an East Region Double-Point race on Saturday night. Other NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Saturday night races will be held at Tri-County Race Track in Brasstown, NC and Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL.

Drivers in the top five of each Region are currently trying to net points on their Best 16 Finish totals, that include Bonus Points for participating in NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Touring events, during the next seven weeks.

If a driver in the top five of the point standings can win each of his next seven starts in events that offer the maximum number of points, and net points off his seven lowest point totals from best 16 finishes, here’s what the point totals could look like at the end of the season on October 4:

Two-time West Region Champion Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS leads the West Region standings with 782 points based on his best 16 finishes, which includes 40 bonus points. Keeton’s seven lowest point totals he can net on are four 42s, two 44s, and a 46. Keeton could score a possible 830 points at the end of the season.

Michael Arnold of Hattiesburg, MS is second in the West Region standings with 764 points based on his best 16 finishes. Arnold can earn 20 more bonus points and net on four 44s, and three 46s to earn a possible 820 points at the end of the season.

Kody Barber of Bogalusa, LA is fourth in the West Region standings with 736 points based on his best 16 finishes, and can run one more National event to earn ten more bonus points to get his quota of 40. Barber can also net on his seven lowest point totals of 34, two 38s, two 40s, a 42, and a 44 to give him a possible total of 820 points at the end of the season.

Cliff Williams of Star, MS is fifth in the West Region standings with 724 points based on his best 16 finishes. Williams has already earned his 40 bonus points this season, but he can still net on his seven lowest point totals in his top 16 finishes at 30, five 40s, and a 42 to earn a possible 802 points.

In the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region, Scott Knowles of Lanett, AL is at the top of the standings with 772 points based on his best 16 finishes. Knowles can earn 20 more bonus points, and net on two 40s, a 44, three 46s, and a 48. Knowles could earn a possible 832 points, eight points shy of the maximum points a driver could earn at 840.

Montana Dudley of Phenix City, AL is second in the East Region standings with 736 points based on his best 16 finishes. Dudley can earn 30 more bonus points, and net on his seven lowest point totals of three 40s, two 44s, and two 46s to earn a possible 816 points at the end of the season.

Nowell could earn a possible 812 points at the end of the season.

Dana Eiland of Salem, AL is fifth in the East Region standings with 718 points based on his best 16 finishes and can earn 20 more bonus points. Eiland can also net on his seven lowest point totals of four 39s, two 40s, and a 42 to earn a possible 810 points at the end of the season.

There are still drivers outside of the Top 5 in both the West and East Region point standings that have yet to put in 16 races, and/or have Event Point Averages of 40 or above that are in championship contention.
