CARTERSVILLE, GA – The two NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division National Championship combatants both visited the Winner’s Circle and the Tech Area in Week 23 action. Point leader Richie Stephens of Salem, AL picked up two wins to bring his season total to 20, and Brooks Strength of Raymond, MS took his 11th win of the season.
Stephens opened NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Week 23 competition by driving the Rocketman Race Cars Chevrolet powered by a $3,495 Chevrolet Performance 602 Circle Track Engine to his 19th win of the season on Friday night at Hattiesburg Speedway in Hattiesburg, MS.
Both Stephens and Strength showed up for the Double Features event on Saturday night at Jackson Motor Speedway in Jackson, MS. Strength took the win in the Week 1 Make-Up race driving the Sauls Farm Chevrolet powered by a $3,495 Chevrolet Performance 602 Circle Track Engine for his 11th win of the season. Stephens was involved in a crash and finished tenth.
In the Week 23 and second NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division race of the night, Stephens outran Strength, who finished second, for his 20th win of the season, but the race was not officially decided with the waving of the checkered flag.
Strength filed a protest immediately after the race to completely disassemble Stephens’ sealed engine, despite the engine having the original factory sealing bolts. The engine was impounded on Saturday night, and NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Technical Inspector Thomas McReynolds traveled to Jackson, MS on Sunday morning to inspect the engine, and found it to be 100 percent legal.
Stephens has not yet clinched the 2015 NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division National Championship because the window of opportunity for Strength to match Stephens’ perfect point total of 700 points and collect 21 wins is still open. There are four weeks left in the season, and a possible 10 opportunities, including three in both Week 24 and Week 25 competition, for Strength to post wins.
The win by Strength on Saturday night, moved him up to the second spot in the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings with a best 14 week total of 697 points. Strength needs three more 50-point wins to tie Stephens in points at 700, and then seven more wins in the last four weeks of the season to surpass Stephens’ current win total.
Branden Harris of Molino, FL did not net any points in NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Week 23 competition after a sixth-place finish on Saturday night at Southern Raceway in Milton, FL driving the Coastal Engine and Machine Chevrolet powered by a $3,495 Chevrolet Performance 602 Circle Track Engine. That dropped Harris to third in the standings with a best 14 week total of 689 points.
Steve Pate of Heflin, AL remains in the fourth spot of the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings with a best 14 week total of 668 points. Pate finished 22nd Saturday night at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, MS and was able to net one point driving the Pate Racing Chevrolet.
Bo Bailey of Milton, FL is fifth in the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings with a best 14 week total of 663 points. Bailey finished seventh on Saturday night at Southern Raceway in the L&L Construction Services Chevrolet and was able to net one point.
Larry Faulk of Monroeville, AL drove the Faulk Motorsports Chevrolet powered by a $3,495 Chevrolet Performance 602 Circle Track Engine to a fifth-place finish on Saturday night at Southern Raceway to net two points. Faulk is sixth in the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings with a best 14 week total of 662 points.
Jason Jarrell of Hattiesburg, MS had a pair of fifth-place finishes on Saturday night at Jackson Motor Speedway driving the Jarrell Rigged Race Cars Chevrolet powered by a $3,495 Chevrolet Performance 602 Circle Track Engine to net three points. Jarrell is seventh in the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings with a best 14 week total of 654 points
Kevin Mitchell of Pensacola, FL did not compete in NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division Week 23 action, but remains in the eighth spot of the point standings. Mitchell has a best 14 week total of 649 points driving the Guy Brothers Roofing Chevrolet.
Jay Geddie of Ellisville, MS drove the Geddie Tree Service Chevrolet to a third-place finish on Friday night at Hattiesburg Speedway to net six points. That enabled Geddie to climb up to the ninth spot in the standings with a best 14 week total of 648 points.
David Williamson of Seminary, MS rounds out the Top 10 of the NeSmith Performance Parts Street Stock Division standings with a best 14 week total of 643 points. Williamson finished sixth and ninth in the two races on Saturday night at Jackson Motor Speedway in the Sauls Farm Ford, but was unable to net any points.
