Special event racing returns to Missouri State Fair Speedway this Friday, May 21 when the Lucas Oil MLRA super late models make their way to the ‘Historic Half Mile’ for the first of three visits this season. Defending MLRA champion, Al Purkey, will look to hold onto his current position at the top of the standings once the night is through. Purkey’s last appearance at the speedway ended in a frightening crash on the front straightaway just past the scoring tower when his car left the speedway and slammed into the catch fence and a utility pole at full speed, before coming to rest on all four wheels. Thankfully, the Coffeyville, Kansas driver walked away uninjured but the same could not be said for his car. You can rest assured the champion driver will want to take home the win and leave that memory long behind him this weekend. There is no doubt that Purkey will have to hold off several strong competitors to pull off the win Friday night. For more information about the Lucas Oil MLRA series visit their official web site at www.mlraracing.com.

Expected contenders for the track’s Specialty Sportswear Winner’s Circle in the MLRA late models will likely be Terry Phillips, David Turner, Jeremy Payne, Eric Turner, Shad Badder, Chris Smyser, Bill Koons, J.D. Hubert, Larry Clawson, Joe Kosiski, and none other than track co-promoter, Jason Bodenhamer. This will be Bodenhamer’s first appearance at the speedway as a driver since taking over co-promoting duties this season. Bodenhamer will don his helmet and discard his official’s responsibilities to veteran race organizer Clint Brown this weekend. With the excitement building over “who will show” in the late models, there really is only one place for you to be on Friday night and that is Missouri State Fair Speedway where many of the aforementioned drivers will take part in a pre-race driver autograph session inside the Budweiser V.I.P. tent. The tent will be accessible by everyone holding a ticket to the races Friday night.

The Rick Ball Ford 360 Sprints and W-K Chevrolet Modifieds will join the super late models this weekend. Current point leaders Chad Lyle will lead the charge in the modified division with Jonathan Cornell leading the way in sprint car action as both of these drivers try to build on their early season success. So far this year, other strong competitors in the W-K Chevrolet Modified division have been Jason Thompson, Jim Moody, Austin Siebert, and Dennis Walrath. Brian Brown, Rusty Potter, Mike Trent, and Terry Hinck have recorded top-tier finishes in the Rick Ball Ford 360 Sprint Cars. Look for all of these drivers and many more to challenge the leaders.

Gates open this Friday night at 5 p.m., hot laps begin at 7:00, and racing starts at 7:30. General admission is $15 for adults, pit passes are $30. For detailed speedway information bookmark the speedway’s official Web site at www.missouristatefairspeedway.com. You may also join the speedway e-mail group by sending a request to PRatSFS@live.com or become a fan of the speedway on FaceBook by sending a friend request to Missouri State Fair Speedway. We’re just two weeks away from the first visit of the year by the MLRA late models. The super late models will take to the track on Friday, May 21 along with the Rick Ball Ford 360 Sprint Cars and W-K Chevrolet Modifieds. Mention of driver names does not guarantee appearance.
