Nextel Service

Looking to get new phone and was wondering how the racing community Nextel service is in the greater St. Louis Area is? Have heard pros and cons. CAN YA HEAR ME NOW!!!!!!!!!!! Do they work, worth switching from standerd cell phones etc.
Thank You

We've had a NEXTEL for a good while. It works pretty good everywhere except at our own house. For some reason it doesn't like anywhere around our subdivision. But other than that it works great everywhere else.

I have a Cingular and I haven't found anywhere it doesn't work.

I Have a spritnt phone and have taken it to alot of differnt tracks ansd when most people can't use theres I can. Up at Eldroa (in the middle of corn feilds) people were asking to use my phone cause they couldn't get a single. You can take your sprint phone to Canda and Mexico. Don't know many other phones you can do that with.

I have Cingular and it works everywhere. I've traveled with it and had great success. On the other hand, if you plan to travel with Nextel, you will not get great service. They usually only work well in the major metropolitan areas (according to Nextel).

I also have sprint and haven't had a bit of trouble with them. I also am able to get a signal at Eldora and everywhere in between.

My brother uses Nextel for work and his biggest complaint is that their service plans are so expensive compared to other providers. I looked into it also a few months ago and thought the same thing.

We have Cingular phones and they work almost anywhere we've been. The only thing I don't like is when I travel down to West Plains, Mo which isn't too far away, For every call we made we had $5.00 in roaming charges!

I worked for Nextel Corperate up until I had my son. The difference between Nextel and other providers is that Nextel does not switch over to the Analog Roam mode. Nextel uses their towers only and doesn't hook up with other companies towers. Yes it is true that Nextel service area is usually in your Metropolitan areas...it follows major cities and major Highways...their Service area is determined by Population. So is Sprints. Spint and Nextels Coverage is almost exactly the same...the only difference is if you are out in the boonies Spint will switch to roam and Nextel will just go to "No Service"...which to me is a good thing because I have had Spint before and I would never make a call when I was out of the service area because it was about $.60 per min. I am glad that Nextel uses theeir towers only because whenever your cell service bounces from other providers tower that lets your personal information out their (ss number, phone number, address) for other companies to get a hold of. Who needs to get a phone call in the middle of the night from Verizon or someone to see if you are happy with your current long distance service. Another great thing about Nextel is there are less drpoed calls than spint. Nextels Towers cover a 50 mile radias an to where Spints only cover a 25 mile radias. Nextels towers areas also overlap meaning there are less "dead areas", Sprints do not. As far as rate plans go: Nextels are changing constantly. I am very happy with my plan right now. I have 1000 anytime min. unlimited D.C and Unlimited Nights and weekends for only about $50. I don't even use my house phone anymore. My husband has a plan with free incooming call. If you have anymore questions I can help.

I agree with racey8 ... there are very few places that my Verizon phone doesn't work, especially since I got a new phone this winter!!!

I changed last summer to Cingular because I couldn't pass up the deal at work. I have found several "dead spots" in north county. I'm going back to Sprint when I get out from under this contract. We have had all the providers at one time or another.

Verison

I have had Verison for almost 4 years now and have never had a problem. It works Great in Bristol Tenn, Dallas Texas, and Mickey Mouse World back to Stl. Louis. I have 400 minutes a month and have free nights and weekends and we pay 29.95 w/ insurance... I have dropped my long distance also since it's free also. No roaming charges. :)

I agree with dirtgirl...We have Verizon too, never have problems. It works all over, even in Cancun, I could send and receive calls with no problem at all.

I've had sprint for about 5 years and never had a problem. If your worried about roaming your phone can be set to only use sprint networks. Then if you have car trouble out in the boonies you can turn off this feature and call for help. With nextel you'll have to walk til you get into there service area.

Nextel

I think the main thing to ask yourself, is how & where are you going to use your phone. If you are always in the metro areas and never travel more than 5 miles off the beat & path when between each metro area, then Nextel is worth considering.

The plans will always vary compared to others, but remember you don't really take advantage of the cost saving of a Nextel unless people you know also have it so that you can 2-way in lieu of calling them on the phone portion of the Nextel phone. The last plan I had with them was free incoming calls & unlimited 2-way use and I would like to say it was around $49.99 or $59.99.

The reason I switched back to AT&T is beacause they work everywhere I go & had the best voice & data plans for my use than the others. (T-moblie, Verizon, Cingular, & Sprint)

Also, both my brothers have Sprint & think the coverage is great all over Missouri.

PS - The other reason I got rid of my Nextel was because it didn't work in the pits & I-55, and my AT&T has full strength.
