NHRA NORTH CENTRAL DIVISION LUCAS OIL SEASON CONTINUES AT GATEWAY INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY

ST. LOUIS – NHRA North Central division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will continue the 2007 season July 13-15 at Gateway Int’l Raceway. The event is the fourth of seven on the division schedule.

The region’s Top Alcohol Dragster competitors are chasing Bill Reichert, the defending divisional and national champ from Owosso, Mich. Reichert started the 2007 season with a win at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. He was runner-up at an out-of-division race in Reading, Pa., before going to the semis at the division’s race at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill. Former division Top Alcohol Dragster champion Marty Thacker is in second place in the point standings, 53 points back. The Robinson, Ill., racer went to out-of-division races in Bradenton, Fla., and Gainesville, Fla., where he had a first-round loss and a semifinal-round finish, respectively. Thacker had his best performance of the season in Joliet where he was runner-up to Ken Perry of Gormley, Ont. Perry is in third place in the point standings with a first round loss in Norwalk and the win at Route 66 Raceway.

Defending Top Alcohol Funny Car champion, Mick Snyder from DeMotte, Ind., has been to three races this year but is currently in fourth place in the point standings. His first event, an out-of-division race in Cecil, Ga., was postponed and although the former NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League competitor had qualified No. 1, he was unable to make it back for the rescheduled date. After that, he suffered a first-round loss in Norwalk but went to the semis in Joliet. If he is going to earn his fourth straight division title, he will need to regain the form he had last year when he had three final-round appearances, and won two of them.

Currently leading the division’s Top Alcohol Funny Car points is Olympic gold medal-winning cyclist Marty Nothstein of Orefield, Pa. He won the Southeast division event in Bradenton and has been to the semis at three consecutive races. Daniel Wilkerson, son of former NHRA Funny Car racer Tim Wilkerson, is in second place in the point standings. The Springfield, Ill., resident opened the year with an out-of-division win in Memphis, Tenn., and was runner-up in Norwalk before going out in the first round in Joliet. Veteran North Central division Top Alcohol Funny Car competitor Chuck Cheeseman is in third place in the point standings. The former division champ from Galena, Ohio, was runner-up at Route 66 Raceway after a first round loss in Norwalk.

NHRA North Central division racers will continue the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season in Indianapolis. O’Reilly Raceway Park will host the series July 20-22. Originally scheduled in April, the ORP event had to be moved due to inclement weather.
