FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Nicholson collects 5th 2014 USCS presented by K&N Filters win at Tennessee National

HOHENWALD, Tenn. - September 13, 2014 – It’s said , “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good”. On Saturday night at Tennessee National Raceway, Anthony Nicholson was the one with all the luck in his hand. Nicholson, the 2008 United Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters Rookie of the Year from Bartlett, Tennessee reclaimed the lead from 2012 USCS National Champion Tim Crawley with four laps to go after Crawley blew a tire going into turn 3 during the series 30-lap Tennessee Fall Nationals A-main.. Nicholson then darted away to make his fifth trip to the www.rockauto.com USCS Victory Lane this season.

Nicholson led the first 20 laps of the event before being passed by Crawley on a lap 21 re-start and said it was the most unlikely win he’s ever had in a sprint car. It was his ninth career series victory, second straight in the series and his second consecutive TN Fall Nationals triumph after winning the event convincingly in 2013. “I knew it was just a matter of time before (Crawley got around us) with all the cautions we had been having; the track blew off and we had too much stagger on the car,” Nicholson explained about the battle with ten to go in www.rockauto.com USCS Victory Lane. “I knew it was coming and I tried to get down low but I went too low and it killed our speed. But when he blew that tire all I could think was, ‘Wow’. Tonight just shows it’s better to be lucky than good sometimes.”

The event was slowed by four cautions, with the first flying on lap lap three for a spin by the No. 17M of Tony Wilson. The second yellow came out one lap shy of halfway when Drummonds, Tennessee’s Justin Webb was battling Nicholson for the lead and 2012 USCS Rookie of the Year, Jeff Willingham from Ripley, Mississippi spun in front of Webb’s No. 31, causing damage to the front end of Willingham’s car and flattening the right front tire on Webb’s machine when the two cars came together. Webb was given the allowed time under caution to return to the event at the tail end of the field, but his wheel was lodged on and the race re-start without him.

The third caution was thrown on lap 20 when sprint car rookie Zach Roach from Sardis, Tennessee spun on the backstretch to set up Crawley’s pass for the lead. The final caution came out after Crawley slowed in the racing line following his blown tire in turn three. He was able to change tires and rejoin the field at the rear.

Cordova, Tennessee female hot-shoe Morgan Turpen surged past her teammate Terry Gray after the final restart to take second place, with Gray, the ten-time series champion from Bartlett, Tennessee rounding out the podium in the K&N Filters third place. Fellow Bartlett native Curt Terrell tied his career-best USCS finish in fourth place and Nesbit, Mississippi veteran sprint car pilot Ronny Howard finished fifth.

Tim Crawley rebounded from his blown tire to charge back through the field for a sixth place finish. Impressive 15 year-old Marco Island, Florida rookie Nick Snyder finished seventh. Sardis, Tennessee’s Jake Roach crossed the checkered flag in eighth. Jeff Willingham finished ninth followed by Nesbit, Mississippi driver Wesley Shepherd who rounded out the top ten at the finish.

Morgan Turpen kicked off the evening’s racing action by winning the Hoosier Tire Speed Dash, and followed that up with a win in the Engler Machine and Tool First Heat. Her teammate Terry Gray rolled to the victory in the Butlerbuilt Second Heat. Tim Crawley was the provisional pole starter after scoring the most passing points in heat race action, but after a six number came up in the K&N Filters Pole award inversion drawing, Justin Webb received the K&N Filters Pole Award. Wesley Shepherd passed the most cars in the A-main (five) to grab the Wilwood Disc Brakes Hard Charger Award.
