Movin' Dave Meyer takes final modified "big one," Kevin the Kid Coyne and Mark the Dweeb Carter also fly the checkers on Country Mart night at the races!

... And then there were two--two mighty modified feature wins for Dave Meyer on the year and two grand for the pocketbook for his latest victory. It's never too late to get started winning feature races and Movin' Dave seems to have found what was missing earlier in the year as he powered his way past Lance Kobush early on in the 40-lap main for this win. With just over 30 mods signed in for the last big-dollar CMS race this year, it took 5 heats and a b-main to sort out the 24-car starting field with the top four from each heat and the top four from the b-main making up the 24-car starting field. Prior to the start of the b-main, Scott Miller, of Marshall, MO, took a nasty series of barrel rolls over the turn 1 and 2 embankment, luckily Miller walked away from the incident unscathed, albeit his car sustained too much damage to continue. Joe Bradshaw and Bobby Layne led the field down for the drop of the green flag with Layne leading the initial few laps. Tim Karrick's difficult weekend continued, as he was an early victim of a flat tire that led to a 24th-place finish. On the restart after Karrick's troubles, the ss12 of Steve Hammons spun bringing out the night's second caution. Once flagman Herschel Thompson threw the green again it wasn't long after that he had to throw the third caution of the night for a spinning Dean Willie and Jesse Wheeler. The damage from the incident forced both Wheeler and Willie out for the night. Bobby Layne continued to lead 2nd-row starter Lance Kobush, who by this time was really pressuring Layne for the lead. Every time Kobush seemed to have the pass made on Layne another caution would fly, as it did again on lap 5 for the ss12 of Hammons, who had to exit the track after being involved in his second caution flag. With big money on the line, many drivers were anxious to get to the front as fast as possible and not even before all the cars could take the green flag on the restart, Herschel was waving the caution again for an incident involving the 51 of Joe Walker and the 19t of Robbie Test. After the 5th caution flew the racing began to settle in with Layne still leading Kobush and Meyer, who by this time had made a power move in turns 1 and 2 to move into third from his 5th-place starting spot. Kobush finally was able to complete a pass on Layne for the lead but it was short lived as Kobush's number 7 machine began to drift high in the corners and Movin' Dave took the lead. In the meantime, the 19t of Robbie Test, 66w of Jason Markewitc, of Arkansas, the 10b of Gary Billings and 17i of Donald Dannar all fell out with mechanical problems of their own. As Meyer was stretching his lead, one of the best battles of the year was going on between points leader Gary Blackburn, Jr., and Bobby Layne. Lap after lap these two battled and diced for the runner-up position and showed their driving expertise and professionalism by putting on a heck of a show for the dedicated fans. These drivers proved to all nay Sayers that clean racing can occur on a short-action track such as CMS. On lap 17, Kobush had to exit the track with tire troubles due to the inner lining of the tire actually coming out and rolling down the track out of turn four, this explained why he began to fade back after losing the lead. After the 6th caution flew for Kobush, Meyer resumed his torrid pace with Layne and Blackburn in tow. Behind the 2nd and 3rd-place cars, Joe Bradshaw, Chad the Gator Lyle, Richard Layne and Terry Schultz were holding their own for the third thru sixth positions. As the crossed flags flew, marking the halfway point of the race, the c3 of Chad Staus made contact with the front-stretch wall and brought out the 7th caution of the race. Once green again, Layne and Blackburn continued to mix it up in fine fashion with Bradshaw, Lyle, R. Layne and now Tom the Rooster Charles mixing it up in the top six. On lap 28, the 83 of Paul Knight exited the track and Chad Lyle, who was looking to win his second big-dollar race of the year brought out the 8th caution of the night when he slowed out of turn four and ended up exiting the track as well. Richard Layne got by Joe Bradshaw's number 8 machine on the restart, while Richard's brother, Bobby, continued his battle with Blackburn. After starting way back in 14th place. Tom the Rooster Charles, hot off of his win in session one of the Tom Karrick memorial the night before, looked to be coming to the front again but hopped the cushion in turn three and was relegated to a tailback restart and an 11th-place finish. On the restart Terry Schultz exited with mechanical problems. After the 9th and final caution flew it was Meyer, B. Layne, Blackburn, R. Layne and Bradshaw holding down the top five spots. Blackburn was able to get around B. Layne eventually but it was short lived as Layne powered back by Blackburn late in the race. Steve Potter's 1p machine exited with a mechanical late in the race as did Richard Layne's 03 machine. In the end, no one had anything for Movin' Dave as he received the double flying checkered flags from Herschel Thompson at the line. B. Layne and Blackburn brought their battle right to the flag stand with Layne edging Blackburn out for second. Bradshaw, Keith Davis in the 30, Jess Folk in the 7f, Bubba Harvey in the 3b and the 51 of Walker came home 4th through 8th at the line. Joe Bradshaw, Bobby Layne, Lance Kobush, Terry Schultz and Meyer won the heat races with Robbie Test taking the checkers in the b-main. Movin' Dave thanked his many fans and sponsors during announcer Scotty Cook's victory lane interview and he also thanked the Walls family for their many years of dedicated weekly race promoting at Central Missouri Speedway. Blackburn, Jr., will hold the point lead going to the final night with Bobby Layne and Movin' Dave Meyer in a classic battle for the runner-up position.

In the limited late model division, even a low car count could not prevent the fans from witnessing a hard-fought battle for the win between Kevin the Kid Coyne, Lance Elwell and Steven Clancy. Coyne took his time getting to the front from his 3rd starting position as Elwell and Clancy battled it out up front for the lead. Once in the lead, Coyne held his line and left Elwell and Clancy to battle for the runner-up spot. When Herschel's crossed waving checkers flew, it was Coyne taking the win over Elwell, Clancy, Derek Nevels, Owen Evinger and Ryan Lovercamp. It was Coyne's 8th win of the year in the limiteds. Ryan Lovercamp took the lone limited late model heat race win. Don't forget to take your program add with you to the Blue Springs, MO, Ponderosa steakhouse for a discount on your order as a result of Coyne once again winning the feature. Coyne wrapped up the championship but behind him Steven Clancy and Owen Evinger are close for the 2nd position with Derek Nevels and Ryan Lovercamp battling with the absent Danny McKenzie for the 3rd spot. Sadly, it was announced that limited late model driver, Mike Brockert, lost his wife last Sunday. The Walls family and CMS fans and drivers send their thoughts and prayers to the Brockert family during their time of loss.

In the street stock division, Mark Carter padded his points lead as he once again had the red number 10 hooked up anywhere on the tough racing surface. Carter took off from the drop of the green and was never challenged for the lead. With only three cautions flying during the a-main, the 51 of Daryl Edwards and the 6 of Wayne Stevens tried to hang with Carter on the restarts but just could not quite pull off the move. When Hershel waved the checkers, Carter was in possession of his 7th a-main victory of the year. Edwards held off Stevens for 2nd, John Ebert came home 4th, the ever-consistent Tammy Korff was 5th and Herb Dannar held on for 6th place. Carter looks to have the points championship wrapped up, but behind him Tammy Korff, Wayne Stevens and John Ebert are close for the runner-up spot.

Don't miss the exciting final night of racing at Central Missouri Speedway next Saturday night, September 11th, for the season championships in all three divisions, the mighty modifieds, limited late models, and street stocks. There are tight points battles throughout the top ten in all divisions and the drivers will be looking to gain as many spots as they can before the final checkers fly under the Walls-era of promoting the CMS races.

Notes and asides:

*Prior to the start of the final big one for the mighty modifieds, outgoing promoter Earl Walls announced that the prospective buyer of CMS is looking to possibly add a new class to the racing action and is looking at a few other options/changes as well, perhaps to include another night of racing action. According to Susan Walls, prospective spokespersons from different classes should either call the track or send in comments, suggestions or class info to the following snail mail or E-mail addresses in order to be considered for next year:

Central Missouri Speedway

5 NE V Highway

Warrensburg, MO

64093

E-mail to: Info@CentralMissouriSpeedway.com. Questions and suggestions may also be brought forth at the rules meeting next week at CMS.

*Two Yellow Flag Rule Clarification: Any car that brings out the yellow flag twice or one red, one yellow during any given race will be disqualified for the remainder of the race. Yellow count does NOT start until after the race has completed the initial green-flag lap. Any spin or car stopping at ANY time for any reason sends the car to the back of the pack for the start or restart.

*Lapped Car Rule Clarification: In the event of realignment after a red or yellow flag, cars that are lapped will be restarted in the spot in which they were at the end of the previous completed lap. It is their line placement, not running position, in the race. If the lapped car(s), is/are considered a hazard to other racers, they may be moved to the rear of the field for safety reasons.

*It has been a great season at CMS in all divisions. The officials and all personnel at CMS have made everyone feel at home as much as possible. Many fans now meet and greet each other during intermission to discuss all things racing and share racing stories and ideas. Scotty Cook has done a great job of filling the announcers slot after the untimely death of Tom Wilson late last year. Scotty is always entertaining and lively on the mic (even with a bad Kenny Rogers loose-wheel rendition), and is always in the know about racing in the local area, a definite plus benefactor for dedicated racing fans. Many fans have been talking about next year's races already and are looking forward to what the new promoter has in store for them.

*Good luck to all the mighty modified drivers heading up to the Boone, Iowa, nationals this coming week.
