O'Neal Continues Domination of Northern All Star Late Model Series
Don "The Real Deal" O'Neal made the short trek tonight from his hometown of Bloomington, Indiana, invading the TWIN CITIES Raceway Park along with 40 other late models for the opening event of the Northern All Star Late Model Series Indiana Speedweeks.
O'Neal capitalized on his heat race win and a front row starting berth to take the honors in the 2005 edition of Indiana Speedweeks Round #1 at the always fast North Vernon, Indiana speedplant.
Despite a rough surface, gloomy skies and ominous weather in the area, O'Neal rode out a broken left front ball joint which hampered him for the better part of half the race to take the checkers over The Badlands Bandit Rick Aukland who chased O in the closing laps but was unable to overcome Don for the win. O'Neal was unable to take his CJ Rayburn, Jay Dickens powered, Allstar Automotive, A-1 Auto Salvage, O'Neal Wood Products, Hoosier by Smash #71 to victory lane due to the damage it suffered in the A-Main event. Don went to victory lane afoot and just finished the winners celebration in time to get out of the pit area before the skies opened and pelted the speedway with a good summer rain! Rounding out the top 10 were reigning UMP National Champion ROdney Melvin, Steve Shaver behind the wheel of the C.J. Rayburn owned, Mark Saul prepared CJ1 TEST CAR, Kevin Weaver, Dennis Erb, Billy Faust, Rohn Moon, Mark Barber and Ritchie Hedrick.
Shaver began the night by recording fast time with a lap of 14.805.
Heat races were won by Moon over Aukland, Barber, Steve Hillard and Mike Jewell; Brian Shirley over John VanDenBerg, Erb, Brent Londeree and Rickey Riggle; O'Neal over Shaver, Weaver, Faust and Randy Korte and Melvin over John Gill, Shawn Negangard, Devin Sebree and Brad Erwin.
Two consi races would transfer the top two finishers of each to round out the field. The first consi was captured by Jewell over Hedrick, Mike Mataragas, Mark Frazier and Steve Barnett. The second consi was won by Patrick Sheltra over Korte, Duane Chamberlain, Scott Graham and Shannon Reed.
Tomorrow night the 2005 Indiana Speedweeks action continues with the travelling show moving to the Lawrenceburg Speedway for Event #2 of 4.
