Bolivar Speedway

by Larry Olson; Mountain Home, AR

BOLIVAR MO. Bill Frye is having the same sort of hot streak Terry Phillips had earlier in the season. Frye picked up his fifth O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-America Racing Series win of the year, and third out of the last four races. Even a fourty five minute rain delay couldn't cool off Frye prior to the feature. Frye trailed Brad Looney for the first three laps, but led after Looney had a flat tire going into turn one, starting the fourth.

Frye and Looney shared the front row of the 40 Lap Feature event. Looney was able to officially lead the first three laps, with Frye and Looney virtually side by side for that early run. Looney slowed going into turn one, with the flat, on the fourth circuit, and came to a halt in turn three, bringing out the first caution of the event. Frye inherited the lead, with Jack Sullivan, Jeff Floyd, Joey Mack, and Mike Bowers making the early top five.

Floyd shot to second on the restart, and Mack moved past Sullivan to third on lap four. Mike Brown took over the fifth spot on lap five. Joey Mack was on the move, and drove by Floyd for second in turn four on lap six.

Out front, Frye opened a 10 carlength advantage by lap seven. Brown slipped past Sullivan for fourth in turn four on lap 10. Jeff Taylor was running fifth by lap 11, while Brown bypassed Floyd for the third spot in turn two on lap 12. Taylor dove by Floyd for fourth in turn two on lap 13.

Bill Frye had opened a 1/2 straightaway advantage by lap 15. Terry Phillips, who had to qualify out of the Last Chance race, had moved to fifth by lap 16. Phillips was running the extreme high side of the track and was the fastest car on the track at this point.

Frye was starting to drive into slower cars by lap 18. Brown, Taylor, and Phillips were in a tight three way battle for third by lap 20. Taylor got the third spot, past Brown on lap 23. That pack had caught second place Joey Mack, and Taylor moved to second on the next circuit. Phillips stayed high, and rocketed past Brown and Mack, into third on lap 25.

Phillips had moved to second, past Taylor in turn four on lap 27, and quickly began to reel in Frye. Phillips had cut Frye's big lead down to 10 carlengths by lap 31. The caution flag waved on lap 33 however, as a hard crash in turn two claimed Jack Sullivan, Brad Looney, and David Gibson.

Phillips' tires cooled during the caution, and Taylor was back by him as the green flag re-appeared. Mike Brown got back around Phillips on lap 38, and Rex McCroskey, who got into the picture late in the race nipped Phillips for fourth on a photo finish.

Bill Frye came home with the win, with Jeff Taylor, Mike Brown, Rex McCroskey, and Terry Phillips making up the top five. Joey Mack, Jeff Floyd, Mike Bowers, Leslie Essary, and Jerry Buck rounded out the top ten.

O'REILLY AUTO PARTS MID-AMERICA RACING SERIES
Budweiser 40
Lebanon I-44 Speedway
Saturday, July 12, 2003

by Larry Olson; Mountain Home, AR

LEBANON MO. Mike Bowers survived a brutal night at the Lebanon I-44 Speedway, taking his first O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-America Racing Series win of the season. Bowers was one of just nine drivers still on the track after 40 laps, taking the Budweiser 40. Heavy rains soaked the racing surface, causing it to be very fast and rough, making it hard on equipment. Bill Frye caught Terry Phillips, and the pair left the I-44 Speedway in a dead heat for the series point lead.

David Gibson earned the pole for the night, with Charlie Randolph to his outside. Randolph took the lead, but the first yellow of the night appeared after just one lap. Scott Drake had pulled up on the backstretch, and was the first car out of action.

Brad Looney shot past Gibson into second on the restart, then drove past Randolph into the lead on the next lap in turn four. Bill Frye moved into the top five, and was past Gibson, into third by lap four. Leslie Essary brought out the caution on lap 10, as he was pulled up on the backstretch with a flat tire.

Bill Frye got his car sideways on the restart, collecting Terry Phillips, Jeff Floyd, and Charlie Randolph. On the next attempt to restart the event, Terry Phillips, Jack Sullivan, and Gary Stolba was involved. It was especially damaging for Phillips, who was finished for the night.

David Gibson fought off Jeff Taylor on the restart, then Gibson went side by side with Looney for the lead on lap 13. Gibson got the spot in turn two, then the caution came out again on lap 14, as Jeff Taylor had pulled up in turn two. Taylor was through for the night.

Mike Brown shot into second on the restart, then Mike Bowers and Rex McCroskey was by Looney. Gibson was a five carlength leader on Brown on lap 17. Chris Smyser moved to fourth, past McCroskey in turn two on lap 20. Leslie Essary brought out the caution again on lap 21, with another flat tire on the backstretch. Rex McCroskey retired during the caution period.

Bowers moved past Brown on the restart, then drove into the lead past Gibson in turn four. Gary Stolba brought out the next caution on lap 23 as he was spun in turn four. Joey Mack moved to fifth on the restart, then drove past Brown into fourth on lap 28. Mack and Frye were side by side for third on lap 30, then Mack made the pass in turn four on lap 31.

Bowers and Gibson were side by side for the lead on lap 33. Gibson was able to stay on Bowers's and pulled even again at the white flag. Bowers shot out to a couple of carlengths lead in turn two and came home with the win.

Mike Bowers took the win, with David Gibson, Joey Mack, Bill Frye, and Mike Brown making up the top five. Jeff Floyd, Chris Smyser, Charlie Randolph, Brad Looney, and Jerry Buck rounded out the top ten.
