Springfield,Mo.-Skill,Prep, and Lady Luck all together will help determine the final outcome in racing and Jeremy Payne found all 3 especially lady luck as a lap 34 caution helped to play an important roll in the outcome of the running of the Larry Phillips Memorial before a capacity crowd Sat night in the MARS/MLRA Sanctioned event at the SpringfieldRaceway.

After 4 exciting heats and 2 B-mains the 22 car field prepared to battle for 40 laps on the Quick-Quarter as MLRA point contender Brad Looney and Matt Johnson brought the field to the green.before the start row 2 starter ERic Turner had to go to the pits for a problem and returned to start at the rear of the field. On the start,Looney grabbed the early lead as Johnson kept close while the field were 2 and 3 wide behind for position. With Looney setting a fast fast,MLRA Kingpin Al Purkey,Jeremy Payne,Terry Phillips and Show-Me Series leader Justin Wells along with Brandon McCormick and Brantlee Gotschall were settling in.Payne moved into second and set his sights on Looney as the long green run was setting-up the race story.Caution waved around lap 19 just before Payne made the move on Looney as Turner who started 22nd had climbed into the Top 10 and was coming quickly.Looney brought the field down and Payne went to try the low side while Looney had the middle lane working strong. On lap 25,while working lapped traffic,Payne made the pass to take the lead and started pulling away while eyes were on a fast moving Turner,Justin Wells,Purkey,Phillips and others as the lightning fast surface allowed drivers to run anywhere on the track. On lap 34,Payne jumped the cushion in turn 3 as Looney shot to the low side to grab the lead as Purkey and Turner were following close behind along with Wells.Just as the pack came under the flagstand,Wells pulled high in turn 1 with a flat tire as the field had to go back a previous lap. This put Payne back in the lead with Looney,Turner,Purkey,McCormick and MLRA point leader Dave Eckrich following.Payne shot to the low groove on the restart as Looney went top side to attempt a final surge.Turner would make a small bobble allowing Purkey to move around.Payne took home the Phillips honors keeping the bragging rights in Team Phillips camp and in Springfield as 3 time and defending champion Terry Phillips pulled-in late with problems ending his chance at victory.

In Support action Luke Driskell of Stillwell,Kansas made his first visit to the SpringfieldRaceway and debuted his new GRT by Phillips modified in grand style in taking the Budweiser A-Modified feature after a tight and tough battle early with Brian Green.Driskell earned the pole through the 28 car field in passing points as he and Green kept the crowd on the edge of their seats early with side by side action.Green's bid for victory ended around lap 10 as he slowed with problems. From there Driskell never looked back in taking the win followed by former champion Jackie Dalton,Erik Maggard,SpringfieldRaceway champion Mitch Keeter and Joplin's Darian Hendrix. The 20 lap feature went caution free as 12 of the 20 starters finished on the lead lap.

The Reliable Chevrolet SportMod feature saw a new winner as Willard's Gary Rodocker started on the pole and withstood several challanges in grabbing his first ever victory.Rodocker withstood early challanges from Shawn Strong and Mike Striegel and then held off a last 4 lap surge from Eric Tinderholt and Strong in securing the win.Striegel and 2010 track champion Wayne Graybeal rounded out the top 5 as 13 of the 20 starters completed all 20 laps. The race only saw 2 caution flags waved as again the SportMods provided outstanding action.

Wheeler Metals StreetStock action was exciting as Rusty Forrest grabbed the early lead from outside pole setter James Redus to take the opening lead.Bill Schoen,Robert High,Bob Maggard Sr,track champion Jack Hamer and Jesse Parton were all together.Forrest was setting a really quick pace, but the pack caught the leader.Bob Maggard Sr made a mid-race pass to grab the lead and withstand a late race challange from Redus to take home the honors in his 64 Chevy Kim Kaasa OK Automotive to victory.Redus, early leader Forrest, former champion High and Nick Whitehead completed the top 5 in another action packed event.

2009 Legends track champion Jason Rayle took advantage of a battle for the lead on lap 16 as Justin Comer and Park Jones made contact while going for the top spot.Rayle in only his second start of the season is 2 for 2 this season as he held off Dave Bauer to grab the win.Springfield's Jay Reynolds recovered from an early spin to grab third place as Rob Watson and Jones completed the top 5.The Speedway will host the DirtCar Legends Nationals presented by SafeRacer.Com out of Neosho,Mo on October 15 and 16th with over 60 plus Legends on hand and support classes each night.

Each feature winner recieved a special edition of Larry Phillips Glassware and SpringfieldRaceway would like to thank Dallas Scott and all others who helped to provide tower lights when the track lost the power to the frontstretch lights causing a 1 1/2 hour delay

The next scheduled race at SpringfieldRaceway will be the running of OctoberFast on Sat October 9th.Scheduled classes include A-Mods,SportMods,StreetStocks,Legends,PureStocks and MidWest Modz.BorderTown Casino will hod the fans Money Bucket drop along with the Fastest Sherriff's Race in the Ozarks.Grandstand Gates will open at Noon that day with hotlaps to start at 1PM and the first qualifying heat at 2PM.The early starting time is due to the large turnout of cars and the other activities involved. The Nascar Autism Night on Wed Sept 29th featuring Kenny Wallace and Jamie McMurray has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts.
