POWRi Midgets Heading To Macon For One Last Hurrah

Saturday Event To Close Out Season For Central Illinois Track

The 2015-racing season will screech to a halt this coming Saturday, October 3 at Macon IL Speedway. There's one thing that can be certain, it won't go out quietly, as the Lucas Oil POWRi National Midgets and Speedway Motors Micros scream into town. The highly popular POWRi divisions will be joined by the Midwest Big Ten Series DIRTcar UMP Pro Late Models for their season championship race and the UMP B-Mods in their finale.

The event, not on the original Macon schedule, is a makeup from the August 22 rainout. On that night, 33 Midgets and 33 Micros were pitside. Those, plus some additional entries are expected for this Saturday night's festivities. The Midwest Big Ten Series Pro Late Models and B-Mods are expected to have good turnouts for their season championship races, as well.

Riverside, CA driver Darren Hagen will lead the list of Lucas Oil POWRi National Midget competitors heading into Saturday's event. Hagen currently sits atop the standings with a huge point lead. Andrew Felker, Austin Brown, Kyle Schuett, and Spencer Bayston are top five competitors. Hagan has won just four features so far this season but his consistent finishes have propelled him to the sizable margin. Hagan will be looking for his first Macon win this Saturday.

Another driver who fans will be keeping a close eye on is Pocahontas, IL driver, Zach Daum. Daum, the 2014 POWRi National champion, sat out for much of the season, recovering from injuries he sustained in an early season crash overseas. Daum missed the previous Macon events this season but will be behind the wheel this weekend.

Carl Junction, MO driver Andrew Felker may be a good bet for those who like to lay a friendly wager on the line. Felker has won two of the three Midget events held at Macon this year, as he got the clean sweep on Freedom Fest weekend. Christopher Bell, who won USAC Midget and Silver Crown races over the weekend, won Macon's other Midget event in June.

The Speedway Motors POWRi Micros are set for their fourth appearance of the season, as well. Concordia, MO driver Nathan Benson leads the points by 190 over Ayrton Gennetten and will be the favorite this week. Benson won three of the four races he competed in during the Freedom Fest weekend at Macon. Not only did he race with the POWRi sanction, he took his wing off to claim a win in the Shelton wingless special. There will be a number of challengers trying to knock him off his pedestal as drivers have gained plenty of track time in the non-sanction Beach House Micro division this year.

The POWRi Micro division standings have Aaron Andruskevitch, Joe B Miller, and Chris Cochran completing the top five. Zac Taylor, Tucker Klaasmeyer, Joey Wirth, Slater Helt, and Shelby Bosie have been other frontrunners this season.

The POWRi divisions will be running at Macon in the second half of a doubleheader weekend. The two classes will be running this Friday night at Belle-Clair Speedway in the Meents Memorial.

Pit gates will open Saturday at 3:00, grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps will begin when the pill draw ends at 6:00, and racing will begin at 7:00. Grandstand admission is $15 for adults and free for kids 11 and under.

Midwest Big Ten Series DIRTcar UMP Pro Late Models & UMP B-Mods Join POWRi At Macon
Point Battles Are Tight On Final Night

While many fans will be attending Macon Speedway this coming Saturday, October 3, to see the open wheel stars in the Lucas Oil POWRi National Midgets and Speedway Motors POWRi Micros, a good number will be there watching the championship battles go down to the final laps in the Pro Late Model and B-Mod divisions.

Just two points separate Berlin, IL driver Tommy Sheppard, Jr. and Springfield, IL driver Guy Taylor in the Macon Speedway Pro Late Model points. Sheppard claimed the first feature of the year, back on April 18 at the season opener and has held the lead for much of the year. Taylor, who looks to be on his way to the Midwest Big Ten Series championship, has won six features at the 1/5-mile out of the ten held. Sheppard's consistency has been good enough to keep him ahead, though. Each position on Saturday night awards two more points than the next. It looks as if it will come down to who finishes ahead of who for the track championship. It's that close.

Touching on the Big Ten points a little further, Taylor has a 56 point lead on Sheppard and a 66 point lead on third place point man, Nick Bauman, of New Berlin, IL. Bauman has competed in one less event than Taylor and Sheppard. After Saturday night, each drivers best eight point nights will be used. That will put Bauman right there in the mix, but it doesn't look like Sheppard or Bauman can garner the points necessary to make it happen. The likely battle to watch will be for the runner-up spot.

Macon Speedway's other class running will be the ever growing B-Mod division. The point battle is tight there as well. Currently, two Springfield drivers are in contention as Thomas Riech has a ten point lead on James Farley, III. Riech has not found victory lane this season, while Farley won his lone feature of the year on June 6.

While the likelihood is not high, if a tie to occur for a point position, the tie-breaker would go to the driver with the most wins. If each driver has the same amount of wins, then the next tie-breaker would be second place finishes and on down the line. Taylor holds the advantage in wins for Pro Late Model competition, while Farley does in the B-Mod class. However, if Riech wins, that would give he and Farley the same amount of wins, resulting in tie-breakers moving to second place finishes.

It will definitely be a fun sideshow to watch on a great night of POWRi racing at Macon Speedway, where the racing action has been outstanding over the past month. We've seen track records, strong fields of cars in different divisions, two and three wide battles last for many laps, and overall, just good entertainment.

Pit gates will open this Saturday at 3:00, grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps will start at 6:00 when the pill draw ends, and racing will begin at 7:00. Grandstand admission is $15, while kids 11 and under get in free.
