Carrying on with a tradition started many years ago, Central Missouri Speedway kicked off their 2004 racing season with the first of three practice sessions on the first Saturday of April. Twenty-five racers and teams headed out to the track to shake down their new equipment and the long winter’s rust. This was also the first opportunity to test out the newly configured CMS, which over the winter was expanded to a lightning quick 3/8 mile facility.

The largest contingent of competitors to show up for the early practice session came from the highly competitive Mighty Modified division. Defending champion Alan Deatherage had his familiar #18 on hand to get an early start in an attempt to repeat as champion. Perennial front-runners Richard Layne, Dean Wille, and Charles Ebert also had their mounts on the track looking to knock Deatherage from the top of the mountain.

In addition to the Mighty Modifieds the Limited Late Model, Street Stock, and new to 2004 Hobby Stock divisions also broke their machines out from their winter slumber. The Limited Late Models are looking to unseat Kevin Coyne from his number one spot while the street stock division will have a new champion this year as defending champion Jesse Wheeler will step up to the Mighty Modifieds in 2004.

“We’ve still got a few things to get finished up, but we’re real happy to get the season going,” commented Susan Walls at the end of the day. “We’re also real happy with the turnout today. With three practice sessions scheduled we always see a few more cars each week as the teams get them done and ready to go.”

With the 2004 campaign just three weeks away there are two more practice sessions scheduled to take place at the track. April 10 will see the gates opening at 11:00 am with the practice scheduled to get underway at 1:00 pm. The following Saturday, April 17, will see practice moved to under the lights as gates will open at 5:30 pm and cars taking to the track at 7:30 pm. The 2004 season will then kick off on April 24 with KOKO/Sunoco Opening Night with the Midwest top drivers looking to place their names in the record books with a win and looking to get a strong start in the race for the championship.
