Question for the QUAD 4 guys...

Ok fellas. My friend has a 96 grand am with the Quad 4 and a manual trans. My question is simple. Can you pull the engine from the top or will the clutch not have enough room to clear the trans? We've done automatics and just wanting to know if there is room to pull topside. We really don't want to drop the whole subframe just for an engine swap. Thanks for your time.

never done one of these on a hornet, but many street cars. i don't think removing the balancer from the front of the engine will give you enough room... if i were doing this, i would leave the engine and trans together and pull it out the top as a unit, then split it on the floor. it's not that much of a deal on a manual trans car. easier than you think.

Thanks Midget Racer.. Yeah its a street car. Forgot to mention that. The car is a customers and was trying to avoid removing the trans for time savings. Was thinking though if I removed the crank pulley as you said then getting some good 'up' angle on the trans maybe we could sneak it out of there. We've done that on a few hard to work on cars and might work here. And if not.. Then we'll go with the engine/trans combo pull. Thanks for the reply though. Good point in the right direction.

rick; to get that much of an angle to do what you are thinking, you are going to have the trans completely unbolted;. trust me when i say it's MORE WORK TO NOT REMOVE the trans. just remove it as a unit, and save all the fightin' and cussin'....

LOL! No problem M Racer.. I'll let him know. We're supposed to start tonight and just wasn't sure. And on a side note.. All that fighting and cussing taught me the knowledge of mechanics! ;D Ha Ha. Have a good day!

Thats the right way. Remove it as a unit...split it outside the car. Ive done several of these. If it has a subframe....ive found its also easier to drop the subframe with the motor and trans.....then you have all the room in the world. Its just 6 bolts to unbolt the subframe....some electrical connections and some hoses. Either way.......good luck. If your putting in a used motor.......better put in a new timing chain and idlers. Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions fellas.. But have to wait till the replacement engine shows up.. The one we were going to purchase had been given to someone else before we could get it. Oh well.. Might have one by this weekend or so with a little luck..
Thanks again for tips..
