Race gas for mods

What do you guys think about running a mod on gas instead of alky?

With the limited tire size and baisicly open motors, I can't understand why anyone would want a mod on alky. The only reason I can imagine is some chassis can't fit a 26" or 28" radiator.

HEY DEAN, JUST WONDERING,

YOU BURN MORE ALCOHOL, BUT IT COST LESS THAN RACING GAS RIGHT? OVER HEATING USUALLY ISN'T A PROBLEM WITH ALCOHOL RIGHT?

JUST CURIOUS.

Comment to PITDRIFTER

Yes PITDRIFTER, I agree with you. I wouldn't trust track gas with my 13-14 to 1 377. I have heard rumors about track gas. Alky runs much cooler, and provides other benefits that gas can't. Yes, it is cheaper but it probably works out equal when you compare the 2. It is hard on pumps and other soft pieces. I would much rather work to get my engine to °200, than work to get it away from °230!! Good call Drifter!

Alky causes alot of rear percentage loss late in the race and extra early. Gas gives a smoother flatter torque curve, and a good clean radiator, solid four blade fan, shroud, and a nice pump will keep gas engines cool. Alky makes a tiny bit less hp and a lot more tourque, but the extra tourque is only useable on tachy. If it runs cool on alky and not on gas you are cooling your engine with fuel and have problems anyhow.

Other than to make a loud "BOOM", I always thought that was one of the fuel system's jobs. To keep the cylinder's cool.???? If the engine has no air (vacuum) leaks, right total advance, good cooling system, fuel is the best tool you can own. Have you ever been at the drag races when the barometer dropped or raised, a major change in air density? They get busy with JETS!! Take advantage of the heavy air with lots of fuel. In my 20 years of building engines, dirt racers waste more chances to pick up a few ponys with the air at night. Tell me this, If your running an adjustable timing set, i.e. Jesel, Comp., why not back up (retart) the cam alittle °2-°4 at halftime when the track gets super black? Less bottom end = less tire spin..Just my 2 cents.

Why would you not want to run gas in a mod, you lose about 60-70 lbs on alky 25-35 on gas, run a smaller tank so you can put weight where you want it. If you have to run alky to keep cool you need to work on your cooling system. Get the right fuel, turbo blue is only good for about 12.5-1 compression. Sonoco and VP have some good fuels VP has some stuff that will cover over 14-1 and still cool the engine ask Brett Kreke.

Now you have got me confused too.....you said you use alky to keep the engine cool? but then you said racers change jets for ponies.....why if on gas dont they jet it correctly to get temp down?

You should change jets when you have a large change in air conditions in both gas and alky but most racers dont have the time or want to bother with them. Most will sacrifice having a rich condition and losing a few horsepower than to bother with the carb. Most racers will jet by temp 180-190 in alky because pure methanol will show no plug reading. Gas on the other hand needs to be jetted by looking at the plugs not by temperature. If you are overheating on gas it is either wrong fuel, cooling, or some other problem such as a lean condition
