Ray Cook’s Old Man’s Garage Spring Nationals Spring Showdown at Ponderosa Speedway Friday April 18

Junction City, KY-April 13, 2014- After a pair of Saturday events, Ponderosa Speedway track promoter Jerry Denson and staff are set to return to the traditional format of Friday night dirt track racing at the 3/8 mile D-shaped red clay oval better known as “Kentucky’s Baddest Bullring” with the 2nd Annual Spring Showdown featuring Ray Cook’s Old Man’s Garage Spring Nationals presented by Schaeffer Racing Oil. Super Late Models will be racing for $4,000 to win and the track’s Modified division will be racing for $1,500 to win, along with a full program for Pro Late Models, Sportsman, and Pure Streets.


The event is part of the 2014 Kentucky Triple Crown weekend with the tour that will see action on Thursday April 17 at 201 Speedway in Sitka, KY ($4,000 to win), Friday April 18 at Ponderosa Speedway ($4,000 to win), and concludes on Saturday April 19 at Florence Speedway in Union, KY ($5,000 to win).


The Friday April 18 racing program will feature Ray Cook’s Old Man’s Garage Spring Nationals presented by Schaeffer Racing Oil in a full program of practice, A-B group time trials (which will automatically lock-in the top four qualifiers from each group), last chance heats, and the 40 lap, $4,000 to win/$400 to start 2nd Annual Spring Showdown A-Main. Also in action will be Modifieds racing for $1,500 to win and $125 to start (Modifieds will have a $30 entry fee for this event), along with Pro Late Models racing for $500 to win (12 or more entries; $300 to win with 11 or less entries). The Sportsman division will be racing for $300 to win at the season opener, while the Pure Street division will race for $200 to win. RACEceivers are mandatory for all divisions and can be rented at the track at driver registration, with all drivers needing to be signed at the time for the drivers meeting that evening at 7:00 p.m.


The Spring Showdown debuted on the track schedule in 2013 and Victor Lee of Danville, KY was the inaugural winner of the event. Lee would top Michael Chilton of Salvisa, KY, Brad Neat of Dunnville, KY, Justin Rattliff of Campbellsville, KY, and Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, IN and collect $3,000 for his efforts on his way to the 2013 Super Late Model track championship at Ponderosa Speedway.

Super Late Models (40 laps): 1st- $4,000, 2nd- $2,000, 3rd- $1,400, 4th- $800, 5th- $700, 6th- $675, 7th- $650, 8th- $625, 9th- $600, 10th- $580, 11th- $560, 12th- $540, 13th- $520, 14th- $500, 15th- $480, 16th- $460, 17th- $440, 18th- $420, 19th through 22nd- $400 to start.

Pro Late Models (20 laps): (12 or more cars)- 1st- $500, 2nd- $250, 3rd- $200, 4th- $150, 5th- $125, 6th- $100, 7th- $95, 8th- $90, 9th- $85, 10th- $80, 11th through 18th- $75 to start; (11 or less entries)- 1st- $300, 2nd- $200, 3rd- $100, 4th- $90, 5th- $80, 6th through 11th- $75 to start.

Modifieds (30 laps): 1st- $1,500, 2nd- $700, 3rd- $350, 4th- $250, 5th- $225, 6th- $200, 7th- $175, 8th- $150, 9th- $130, 10th through 18th- $125 to start.

Sportsman (15 laps): 1st- $300, 2nd- $200, 3rd- $150, 4th- $125, 5th- $100, 6th- $90, 7th- $80, 8th- $70, 9th- $60, 10th- $55, 11th through 18th- $50 to start.

Pure Street (12 laps): 1st- $200, 2nd- $100, 3rd- $90, 4th- $80, 5th- $70, 6th- $65, 7th- $60, 8th- $55, 9th- $50, 10th- $40, 11th through 18th- $30 to start.


For the Super Late Model division, the entry fee is $100 at all series events plus transponder rental ($20) that will be used to time and score the cars (per series rules). The tire rule for each event will be as follows: Hoosier- 1300, 1350, 1600, LM 40 (both front and rear); American Racer- 44, 48, 56 (both front and rear). Tires will also be checked for soaking and by durometer for hardness before each car goes on the track for qualifying or any racing action. The car and driver weight rules for this event will be as follows: 2350 lbs.- Open Motor; 2300 lbs.- Steel Block/Aluminum Head-Spec Motor Only (8" spoiler allowed, 12" sides); 2250 lbs.-CT525 Motor (8" spoiler allowed); 2250 lbs.-All Steel Motor or Crate Motor (12" spoiler allowed). There will be a 1 lb. per lap burnoff plus 5 lbs. in the Heat Races and Feature, plus if the driver is using a HANS Device that will allow a 30 lb. weight break and the use of a working fire extinguisher will allow for a 20 lb. weight break.


Activities for the Friday April 18 event will see the general admission area and pit area open at 4:00 p.m. The drivers meeting will take place at 7:00 p.m., with practice laps set to begin at 7:20 p.m. Time trials will get underway at 7:45 p.m., with racing set to take the green flag at 8:30 p.m. Ticket prices for the Friday April 18 event in the general admission will be $20 for adults, while children ages 12 and under will be admitted FREE with a paid adult. A pit pass will be $35.


Ponderosa Speedway last raced on Saturday April 12 and feature event winners that evening included Dustin Neat of Dunnville, KY in Late Models, P.J. Feistritzer of Danville, KY in Pro Late Models, Ryan Thomas of Gosport, IN in Modifieds, and Glen Hounshell, Jr. of Mount Vernon, KY in Sportsman.
