There was no doubt that August greeted fans and drivers in attendance in full force as the temperature flirted with the century mark Saturday night at Warrensburg’s Central Missouri Speedway. A total of sixty-seven drivers drew for starting positions on the twelfth night of competition this year. Street Stock, ULMA Late Model, and Modified drivers all competed in qualifying heat races prior to the main events taking to the track. By the end of the night, three new feature winners visited victory lane with exciting wins and one driver pulled off his third feature win of the year. Several fans waited for the sun to lose some of its overbearing heat before arriving and in the end were in and out of CMS in record time on Heartland Waste night at the speedway.

Fifteen Street Stock drivers raced their way into the feature race lineup through two heat races. In heat number one, Warrensburg driver Dale Atkinson drove to his first win of the season ahead of Chad Eickleberry and Brian Johnson. Heat two saw another first-time winner with John Miller of Oak Grove claiming the win ahead of new point’s leader Nic Bennett and Tammy Korff. The heat-race winners paced the field for the 15-lap main event with Miller taking the early lead ahead of Atkinson. Bennett stayed near the front the entire race in hot pursuit of his first win with Eickleberry and Johnson running in the top five. Atkinson and Johnson had a torrid battle for several laps battling for third and fourth as lap-after-lap Miller continued pacing the field. Eickleberry stayed in the hunt in a close run with Johnson as Atkinson slipped back to fifth. Miller maintained pace at the front as the best race on the track continued to be between Johnson and Eickleberry for third and fourth. As laps wound down, Miller held his line and drove a smart race and eventually scored his first-ever feature race victory. In victory lane Miller thanked the many people who make his racing program work from week-to-week including long-time friend, and former driver, Johnny Ebert. Bennett cushioned his point’s lead with a runner-up finish with Johnson, Eickleberry, Atkinson, Michael Mullins, Korff, Jerry Schmidt, Craig Hayes, and Roger Stone completing the top ten.

A small but competitive field of ULMA late models competed in one heat race during the night, which turned out to unfortunately be a costly event for two top racers. Flyin’ Mike Ryun paced the nine-car field during the heat race for his fourth heat win of the year, this time ahead of Allen Perryman and Jason Sivils, who made the long haul from Springfield, Missouri. A grinding crash during the lone heat race eliminated both Brett Rollert and Bob King; each driver owns multiple feature winners at the track but on this night were unable to contest for the win due to the excessive damage received in the grinding crash off of turn four. For the feature race, Ryun led the field to green with Perryman on the outside pole. It was evident that Ryun had things well in control as he made his way to the high side and comfortably maintained his lead. The best race on the track turned out to be for second position between Randy Ainsworth and Brett Wood as Perryman and David Angell stayed within the top five trying to keep Ainsworth and Wood in sight. Late in the event Ainsworth appeared to be reeling Ryun in but with two laps remaining, Ryun again stretched out his lead and ultimately secured his first-ever ULMA-sanctioned win in the quick green-to-checkered flag event. Ainsworth scored his best finish of the year with a second-place run, Wood crossed the line third with Perryman fourth, Angell fifth and Jon Binning sixth.

Twenty-three modifieds made their way to the speedway for the night’s competition competing in three heat races. In the opening race, Sedalia driver Terry Schultz drove to victory ahead of Don Crnkovich and Doug Walrath. Point’s leader and former track champion Aaron Marrant claimed heat two ahead of Joshua Stephens and Curt Potter as Joe Walker raced to the win during heat three ahead of ‘Fast’ Richard Layne and Kyle Westerhold, who returned to racing in his car that was nearly destroyed on opening night in April. Marrant and Schultz started in the pole positions and led the field to the initial green flag with Marrant quickly jumping out to an early lead. Two early race caution flags flew before lap seven was in the books and upon the ensuing restart, Schultz’s car went around off of corner number three, unfortunately relegating the popular driver to the back of the field. The field once again took the green flag on the next restart and ran for five more laps before another caution flew, this time for the stalled machine of Travis Johnson off of turn one. As the field slowed, fifth-place running Richard Layne’s car wound up facing the wrong direction, relegating him to the back of the pack on the final restart. Some exciting side-by-side action took place behind Marrant as he securely led the field with Crnkovich, Stephens, and Walker battling for second. Meanwhile Tim Karrick, Curt Potter, Doug Walrath, Dean Wille, and Chad Staus tried to remain in the top ten. In the end, no one had anything for Marrant as he grabbed his third main-event win of the year. Last week Marrant appeared to have things going his way until he blew an engine just before the rain-shortened race was halted and unfortunately last night, Marrant thought he blew another engine just as he crossed the finish line upon winning. Crnkovich recorded his best CMS feature-event finish by holding off Stephens for second with Walker in fourth. Karrick recorded a fifth-place run after starting deep in the field as Curt Potter, Doug Walrath, Wille, Staus and Westerhold completed the top ten.

When last week’s action was halted by rain showers for the Battle of the B-Mods, all heat races were in the books but the main event had to wait one more week. The wait was worth it for one driver in particular who stated in victory lane that he nearly sat out the event, only to run after a fellow competitor convinced him to load up and make the trek to CMS for the $600-to-win twenty-five lap feature event. Based upon the previous week’s heat-race finishes, Bobby Raybourn and Michael Mullins led the charge to the green flag. Early on, four cars were involved in a caution before one lap was completed. Mark Evinger, Bryan Montgomery, Stephen Barbour, and Lucas Isaacs were all involved in the first caution flag of the race, which forced a complete restart. Raybourn raced his way into the lead early on with Brad Smith of Belton breathing down his neck in the runner-up spot. Chris Stout experienced mechanical troubles on lap two and exited the race early. Raybourn maintained his lead ahead of Smith, Mullins, Bobby Layne and Ethan Isaacs early in the race. Front runners Layne and Eickleberry both exited the race on lap ten with mechanical problems just as Joshua Jacobs also gave up his top ten run with a left front flat tire. Raybourn continued to bring the field to the scoring line until a lap ten caution flag. With fifteen laps to go after the race resumed, Raybourn had his hands full with Smith, who pressured him continuously for the lead all-race long. Mullins maintained third but the driver on the move was Ethan Isaacs in fourth from his fifteenth starting spot. A great battle then ensued between Montgomery, Jeremy Lile, Chris Brockway, Ethan Isaacs and Mullins from third through seventh. Lucas Isaacs exited the race on lap sixteen just as Chris Brockway nearly went around off of corner two. Another caution flew on the field for debris on the track with six laps remaining. Near the end of the race it was a six-lap shootout with Raybourn and Smith swapping the lead in the final few laps. Smith actually led the race in the waning laps until Raybourn stayed hooked up on the low side and regained the lead with two laps remaining. With the white flag looming, another caution flew as the Evinger and Michael King cars got hooked together coming off of turn one. Evinger had to leave the race after being involved in his second caution flag incident of the night with King able to restart tailback. This set up a thrilling green, white, checkered-flag finish as Raybourn held on for his first-ever B-modified win with Smith second. Eighteenth-starting Jeremy Lile gained fifteen positions by the conclusion of the event and secured a third-place finish. Bryan Montgomery improved from his eleventh grid position and came home in fourth just in front of tenth-starting Rusty Trimble. Mullins settled for sixth with Ethan Isaacs, Brian Ziegler, Stephen Barbour, and D.J. DeMotte rounding out the top ten.

Kids, you will want to mark next Saturday night August 9th on your calendar for the annual CMS Kid’s Night at the track. This ever-popular night includes all four competing car classes but the highlight of the night should be the annual age division, boys and girls foot races down the front stretch of the speedway. Every kid twelve and under will receive one free hot dog and drink from the track and will have the opportunity to compete in the foot races. Also, each child twelve and under will go home with a goody bag stuffed with all sorts of items including school supplies, race stickers, treats, and much more. Pit gates open at 4:30, grand stand seating opens at 5; hot laps roll out at 7 with racing close behind at 7:30. For complete admission information, race results, and general track information log onto www.centralmissourispeedway.net or call the Track Report line at (660) 747-2166. See you next week for Kid’s Night!
