East Smethport, PA (July 25, 2014) Little Power Shop RUSH Crate Late Model point leader, Chad Ruhlman returned to victory lane Friday night at MCR by winning the Ralph & Peggy Grimes Memorial. Art Peterson, Mitch Boylan, Jeremy Williams also returned to victory lane and Kirk Bradley captured his first of the year.
Pure Stock point leader, Roger Schweikart and Smethport's, Dustin Raught paced the fifteen car pure stock field to the green flag. Raught would get the initial jump on Schweikart with Joe Layfield holding down third. Layfield would grab second from Schweikart on lap five as Jason Dobson would also move past the fading point leader. Raught was still holding the lead with Layfield and Dobson running door to door for second till Dobson would take the runnerup spot on lap 8 and Art Peterson would move into third on the very next lap. Lap ten would see the yellow lights flashing for RJ Pistner and on the restart Peterson would get second from Dobson with Raught still in front looking for his first win. Peterson would use his bumper the next two laps to remind Raught he was there and on lap twelve as the leaders raced into turn one, contact was made between the two racers with Peterson taking the top spot from Raught. As the duo raced down the back stretch, Raught would spin in turn four with Dobson narrowly missing him and the lights flashed again this time for Raught, who was having another stellar run. Peterson restarted the field and led the final two laps over Dobson and Layfield, with Moose Reed making a late race run to finish fourth and RJ Pistner coming back from his lap 10 yellow for a top five finish.
Steve Sklar and Dobson were on the front row for the Highway Auto Stock Car feature. Dobson used the outside lane to get to the front of Sklar at the start with Butch Talbot in third. Kurt Stebbins moved into third on lap three and on lap five was second behind Dobson with four time winner, Jeremy Williams now in third making his way to the front. Dobson, Stebbins and Williams were all engaged in a battle for the lead with Williams coming out on top leading lap eleven. Williams would lead the final four laps for his fifth win of the season over point leader Stebbins, Dobson, Talbot and Rich Wotjowicz was fifth at the line
Jason Knowles and veteran John Haggerty led the Little Power Shop RUSH Crate Late Models to Curtis Peters green flag for the Ralph & Peggy Grimes Memorial. Knowles would beat Haggerty at the start with Brady Wonderling sliding into third. Knowles would hold that pace for the first five laps over Haggerty and rest of the field as ninth place starting Max Blair worked his way to fifth and heading to the front. A lap eight yellow slowed the pace and on the restart mayhem broke loose on the front stretch as the field got stacked up resulting in a seven car pileup that saw the #07x Kevin Dzuroff, getting upside down. After the cleanup, Knowles would again lead the field to the green and this time Brady Wonderling would get around Haggerty for second with Blair now fourth and Doug Ricotta in fifth. Blair would get past Haggerty on lap ten for third setting his sight on Knowles who had the first ten laps. Blair would move into second on lap thirteen as the fans anticipated MFB catching Knowles. As Blair closed in on Knowles, Chad Ruhlman started to make his presence felt as he kicked Haggerty out of the top five. As lap twenty was clicking off the board, Knowles would get high out of turn four with Blair sneaking by and contact was made between the two racers sending Blair into the wall ending his night. During the caution, race officials determined Knowles would go to the tail of the field for the contact as Blair was officially credited for the leading the lap. When all the dust settled, Brady Wonderling was your new leader with Ruhlman, Ricotta, Haggerty and Dustin Waters now fifth. Wonderling sped away on the restart but Ruhlman would stick with the #10 machine as the white flag was waving, Ruhlman made his move to grab the lead from Wonderling to pick up his eighth win of the year at MCR along with the $1000 prize and $700 Cutco Knife set that was awarded as well. Wonderling was second followed by Ricotta, Haggerty had his best finish in years in fourth and Dustin Waters came home fifth.
Newcomer Jason Birdsay of Hornell NY and Cyclone's, CJ Irons led the 17 car mini stock feature to the green flag. Birdsay led the first two laps over Irons as the cars of Birdsay, Irons, Holden Heinemann, Lyndsay Carlson, Mitch Boylan were all within car lengths of each other running two and three wide for the race lead. Irons would lead lap three over Heinemann and on lap four Heinemann would get into Irons as both would get side ways in front of the mad trio of cars behind them. As the leaders gathered both cars up and raced down the back stretch, point leader, Mitch Boylan would move into third and take the lead on la five. Boylan would stretch his lead leaving the only race to watch was for second with Heinemann, Irons, fifteenth starting, Chris Paar and Carlson all battling for second. Aar would get by Irons for third on lap thirteen as Boylan was a full straight away ahead. At the line it was Boylan, Heinemann, Paar, Carlson beating Irons at the line for fourth.
Kirk Bradley and former UEMS Emod champion, Carl McKinney paced the sixteen car Close Racing Supply Modified feature. Bradley took the lead at the start with Mr.V6, Darren Tarabori quickly into second ahead of McKinney. With five laps in the top three were still the same, with three time winner John Woodward Jr now fourth and ninth starting Rich Michael Jr now in fifth. Michael would make his way to fourth on lap twelve as RMJ started to use the high groove. Tarabori was all over Bradley for the lead and contact was made between the two on lap fifteen allowing Michael to get a great run and move into second. With two to go RMJ using the new high line groove would sneak by Bradley coming out of turn four to take the lead only to see his right rear tire blow apart and shred into pieces ending his fine run and possible first win of the year at MCR. Bradley restarted the field and held off the stiff challenges of Tarabori to get his first win of the year at MCR over Tarabori, Woodward, Nathan Hill and Al Brewer picked up his fifth top five in the last six events.
MCR will be back in action on Saturday night with the make up BILL BIGLEY MEMORIAL for the Little Power Shop RUSH CRATE LATE MODELS. A complete regular program for the other divisions will also be running and race time is the normal 7pm. This will be the final event at MCR as MCR will be idle for the rest of August due to the county fair and other fairground activities. Gokart racing will still be going on Sunday, August 3rd and Sunday August 10th to kick off the McKean County Fair.
