Member drivers of the United Late Model Association (ULMA) were busy last weekend as all four ULMA-sanctioned tracks hosted drivers and fans for racing action. The action began last Friday at Butler Motor Speedway (BMS) and Callaway Raceway, and then continued Saturday at Central Missouri Speedway and Lucas Oil Speedway. Jeff Schlup became the only four-time winner so far this season by taking another feature win at Callaway Raceway. Shawn Rayfield drove his CRATE late model to victory lane in his first-ever appearance at Warrensburg's own Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) on Saturday while Matt Menzie pulled into victory lane for the first time this year at Lucas Oil Speedway. So far this season, thirteen different drivers have claimed ULMA wins.

Jeff Schlup of California, MO found himself in victory lane again at Callaway Raceway last Friday night in his Cedar Ridge Taxidermy, Superior Power Cleaning, All Star Performance, Brake Buddy, J&J Steel, Scheck Industries, Travel Answers of Jeff City, Hatfield Racing Engines-powered #21 Rayburn Chassis late model. There were a total of 20 drivers on hand with 8 ULMA members among the drivers in attendance. Schlup has now won four of nine features contested at the track this season. Despite suffering mechanical issues, Danny Lorton of Moberly, MO tied his season-best finish with a third-place run in the FastShafts, Heartland Motorsports.com, Autozone of Moberly, Smothers Auto Sales, TCI Automotive, Randy's RaceMart Chevy Gran Prix GRT, Schurbon Engines & Machine powered #27 late model. Bob Test drove the Lannie Wineland-owned #27t GRT late model sponsored by Wineland Enterprises, L&J Metal Works, Browner Alternator & Starter Service, Eldon Freightway, Cole County Upholstery, Tipton One Stop to a fourth place run. Other drivers scoring top ten finishes at Callaway included Robbie Test, Walt Imhoff, and Robbie Wright. Callaway Raceway hosts another week of competition this Friday, July 17th, according to the track schedule if the races are cancelled due to weather on Friday, the program will be run on Sunday, July 19th. For complete track information check out the track's Web site at www.callawayraceways.com.

Although a ULMA member did not visit victory lane at BMS, there were three ULMA members on hand of the 12 late models signed in for the night. Jake Williams of Lockwood, MO came away with the best member-driver finish by racing his Yeoman Race Engines GRT #72w to a third-place finish. Randy Ainsworth piloted his #57a Quarles Family late model to a seventh place finish; Dwight Niehoff was also present but was unable to start the main event. BMS is scheduled for another action-packed night of racing this Friday, July 17th. For more information log onto the track's official Web site at www.butlermotorspeedway.webs.com. For race day information call (816) 738-9433, the track is located 45 minutes south of Kansas City off Hwy 71 in Butler, MO.

Matt Menzie became a first-time ULMA winner this year after he claimed the win at Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday night. Menzie, of Clever, MO earned the hard-fought victory by a scant .006 seconds over Evan Hubert of Cross Timbers, MO according to the track's Web site, as the two drivers raced to the finish under a green, white, checkered-flag finish. Hubert's sponsors include Lucas Oil Products, AFCO, Dixie Chopper, A&G Electrical, and Simons Petroleum on his Mastersbilt #9e late model. Javan Payne of Russelville, MO, who claimed a ULMA win at Callaway a few weeks back, ran to a strong third-place finish. There were 17 late models present with 13 ULMA-member drivers on hand. Additional strong ULMA finishes were posted by J.D Hubert 4th, Jake Williams 6th, Kevin Kaiser 7th, Harlen Kennedy 8th, and Andy Kennedy 10th. Lucas Oil Speedway has a special touring series super late model race scheduled this Saturday night. ULMA-sanctioned points racing resumes the following weekend, July 25th. Another Saturday has come and gone at Warrensburg's own Central Missouri Speedway with another winner finding his way to victory lane at the high-banked clay oval. In eight races at CMS this season, eight different drivers have found the winner's circle at the track. Shawn Rayfield, who made the long three-hour haul to the track, became the latest winner and first driver to pick up a ULMA-sanctioned win this year at the track in a CRATE late model. The former four-time champion of Montgomery County Speedway in New Florence, Missouri, held off a strong field of 19 late models in a torrid green flag to checkered flag battle with Mike Ryun, who was also making his first ULMA start of the season. There were 14 ULMA-member drivers on hand for the three heat races and feature event among the 19 drivers on hand. Rayfield, who started on the front row, survived many challenges from Ryun for the lead in his Rocket Chassis, LK Custom Fiberglass, Lachata Mexican Restaurant, AFCO Race Products, Dominator Race Products #18r 2009 Rocket Chassis 602 CRATE late model. Ryun's had an impressive run to a second place finish, his first in a late model this year; Ryun, from Pleasant Valley, MO has been busy with his factory stock on Friday night's at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City. Robbie Test of Jefferson City, MO kept the overall point's battle with Kevin Kaiser close with a solid third-place showing in his Tony Wineland/Russell Kueffer-owned #1 INCE Chassis machine sponsored by W&M Welding, Bonecutter's Body Shop, Cole County Upholstery, Engine Connection, VK Graphics, Eldon Freightway, and Wineland Enterprises. Additional top-tier ULMA finishes were posted by Steve Clancy, Ainsworth, Jon Binning, Kevin Coyne, and Bob King in his return to racing after a serious highway vehicle crash. Bob Test and Allen Perryman rounded out the top ten as ULMA drivers swept the top ten finishes at CMS last weekend. Again we have to ask the question for this Saturday night, will CMS have its first repeat winner of the year or will another new driver visit victory lane for the first time? For complete track information be sure to check out www.centralmissourispeedway.net.

Having a look at the overall ULMA standings, Kevin Kaiser continues to hold onto the lead just ahead of former leader Robbie Test by a mere 20 points. Kaiser has posted 16 starts this season to Test's 21 starts and his next worse thruway finish of the year is a seventh place finish; Test's next worse thruway finish is a sixth-place finish. ULMA-member drivers earn points throughout the season and keep their overall 15 best finishes of the season to determine the final rundown in the season-ending point standings. Kevin Coyne and Danny Lorton continue swapping the third and fourth place positions in the standings with Randy Ainsworth quietly waiting in the wings in fifth place. A driver to keep an eye on in the coming weeks as he works his way toward the 15-starts plateau will be Jeff Schlup; currently Schlup has 12 starts and 4 wins. His worst finish of the year is 19th, after he discards that finish his next worse finish is 8th; he has nine top nine top-three finishes so far of his twelve starts! The ULMA points always become exciting to watch this time of year as additional drivers cross the 15-starts marker. In the coming weeks, Schlup, Williams, and A.L. Barbour will become the latest drivers to start 15 feature races for the year.
