KANSAS CITY, Kan. (April 11) -- USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods battled it out at the Lakeside Speedway Friday night for the inaugural Iron Man Challenge event at the historic clay oval in Kansas City, Kan.

In the end, two drivers who had to settle for runner-up finishes in points championships last year came out on top.

Two-time USRA Stock Car National Champion Tom Schmitt of Independence, Iowa, patiently worked his way forward in his main event after starting 13 in the field.

After Jay Barnes and Marshall Jewett entertained their audience with five lead changes during the first 11 laps, the sixth lead change of the race went to Schmitt and he rolled on to score the win and pocket the $750 top prize.

Mitch Hovden, who edged out Schmitt in last year's Iron Man points chase, was unable to do the same Friday night and wound up second at the finish line.

Joe Smith Jr. charged to a third-place finish while Justin Seifert got around Jewett for fourth in the 18-lap affair.

Brad Smith of Belton, Mo., started third in the USRA B-Mod main event but was in control by the second lap after disposing of front row starters Chad Feather and Chad Clancy.

Jake Richards gave chase for most of the contest but was unable to reel in the smooth-driving Smith, who finished second in the final 2014 USRA B-Mod national points.

While Smith netted $600 for his efforts, Yancy Shepard passed 17 of his fellow competitors in 18 laps to earn the runner-up paycheck with Richards, Feather and Clancy rounding out the top five.

Three straight nights of racing awaits the drivers in the Iron Man Challenge two weekends from now with the USRA B-Mods kicking things off at the Cedar County Raceway in Tipton, Iowa, on Thursday, April 24.

The USRA Stock Cars will join them the next two nights when the two too-tough-to-tame divisions invade the Bloomfield Speedway in Bloomfield, Iowa, on Friday, April 25, and the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo., on Saturday, April 26.

The Iron Man Challenge will share the spotlight with the USMTS Modifieds at all three events to give the fans a behemoth bang for their buck.
