PHOENIX - Indiana’s Scott James had the lead going into the first turn and then withstood constant pressure from Kelly Boen of Colorado to take the win in Thursday night’s Western All Stars late model stock car feature in the opening night of the Checker Auto Parts/Budweiser Western World Championships at Manzanita Speedway.

The first 15 laps were run caution free and the leaders were in thick traffic as they battled for the lead. The race was halted when Randy Carder flipped in turn one. Once the wreckage was cleared away the race resumed but was slowed by a two car crash on the front straightaway of the half mile track before a lap could be completed. While the crash was being cleared a power failure knocked out the front straightaway lights and the race was called with 15 laps in the books. Behind James and Boen were A.J. Kirkpartick, Karl Tipton and Mike Marier. Rounding out the top ten were Chris Shannon, Brad Pounds, Ron Bartells, Kellen Chadwick and Lonnie Parker, Jr.

The Western All Stars provided 54 cars for their first ever Western and the action got fast and furious in the timed qualifying runs. Tipton of Gilbert, AZ edged Boen for fast time honors as they ran at sprint car speed. Tipton, one of the last to qualify tripped the clock at 19.137 (94.587 mph), just a fast tick of the clock faster than Boen’s 19.187.

The field ran five heat races with the top three from each qualifying for the feature. Kirkpatrick, Keith Noyes and Carder topped the field in the first eight lapper. James, Marier and Jim Whisler made the main through the second heat. The third heat went to Boen over Chris Shannon and Brad Pounds. The top three in the fourth heat were Bartels, Chadwick and Art Lacy. The final heat was won by Tipton over John Anderson and Mike Balcaen.

Two "B" mains, scheduled for 15 laps, were run to complete the main event field with the top four from each transferring.

The first "B" was a disaster from the green flag with five yellow flags flying and that was in the first five laps. Officials had seen enough and the race was checker flagged with only those five laps completed. The top four were Mike Stadel, Joey Moriarity, Lonnie Parker, Sr. and Jeffrey Priddy.
Things went smoother in the second "B" as Lonnie Parker, Jr. held off John Duty to take the win. Jim Beaman was third and Rob Sanders edged Cory Kruesman for the final transfer spots.

MADRID DEBUTS NEW CAR AND WINS DIRT MODIFIED FEATURE.

After destroying his car in the Barnett Harley Davidson Dirt Modified Nationals Anthony Madrid, with help from some friends, was back with a new car that was the best in the field.

Mike Strobl led the first two laps but then retired and that put Madrid in front of the field. He was never headed as he finished a little over two seconds in front of R.C. Whitwell. Jason Noll came out of the eighth role to nail down third, Rob Mayea was fourth and Bo Hatfield took fifth. Rounding out the top ten were Chuck Kuehl, David Rosales, Jay Foster, Dominique Askren and Sammy Schoolcraft.

Stobel won the first heat with George Fronsman, Tim Ward, Whitwell and Terry Belcher, Jr. in pursuit. The second heat went to Rosales who beat Madrid, James Pautot, John Cox and Brian Zalenka. The final heat let Ricky Thornton, Jr., the 2007 track champion, display his new paint job as he stayed in front of Mayea, Brandon Eichelberger, Hatfield and Askren to take the win.
