Season Opener Brings Wide Field to West Plains Motor Speedway

Hood Performance Engines of West Plains sponsored the season opener at West Plains Motor Speedway Saturday night. Although it was cold, the racers where on hand and anxious to compete in the first points races of 2003.

Billy Romans of West Plains, scored his first win of the season in the IMCA Modified class. Taking second place was Bill Adams of West Plains, while Richie Tosh of Salado, AR, finished third followed by Rob Muilenburg of Sparta, MO and Dusty Johnston of Flippin, AR, to round out the top five. Thirty-four modifieds raced in heats, a B-Feature and the main event.

The Super Stock main event was won by Stan Lewis of Jonesboro, AR, with Stan Ellison of West Plains taking second place. Rounding out the top five were Jesse Brotherton of West Plains, Jeff Greene of Paragould, AR, and Cody Kelly of Birch Tree, MO.

Dave Wallace of Theodosia, MO, made his first appearance on Victory Lane as he scored the win in the Hobby Stock class. Blake Smith of Batesville, AR, crossed the finish line second followed by Brett Love of Mt. Pleasant, AR, Donnie Miller of Branson, AR, and Chuck Russell of West Plains.

The two-man team of Bob and Jason Johnson of Hardy, AR, took the Cruiser win followed by Bill Johns of Hardy, AR, Mike Johns and Jim Recollect, another two-man team, of Hardy, AR, Kenny Lilly of Birch Tree, MO and Donald Collins of West Plains rounded out the top five.

The Front Wheel Drive feature winner was Daniel Jenkins of Ash Flat, AR, while Jim Simmons of West Plains, Midge Johns of Hardy, AR, Russell Truitt of Hardy, AR, and Patrick Reed of Mtn. View, MO, rounded out the top finishers.

The new Sunday afternoon race program was sponsored by Ramada Inn & Figuro's as the points season for the Mini-Stock class opened. Joshua Fortner of Newport, AR, took home the top prize money and trophy. Scoring second was Jimmy McDaniel of Bull Shoals, AR, followed by Ike Moore of Hartsville, MO, Jack Essary of Republic, MO and Jonathan Russell of Jonesboro, AR.

The additional classes included the new Youth Hobby Class for 13-15 year olds driving a Hobby Stock or slower car. Thirteen year old Ben Ledgerwood of Birch Tree, MO won the feature event with Max Lilly also of Birch Tree, taking second. In the ladies Powder Puff feature Beverly Ledgerwood of Birch Tree, MO took all the honors with a two-lady team of Marlene Lilly and Monica Kelly, both of Birch Tree, MO, coming in second.

The open track practice time was put to good use by several of the local IMCA drivers as well as some Hobby Stock and Cruiser drivers as they used the extra laps to dial in their equipment for the upcoming season's events.

Next week the Saturday night events will be sponsored by Medlock Truss Co., of Ash Flat, AR. This will be the first Law Enforcement Appreciation Night to be held at West Plains Motor Speedway. Law Enforcement officers from the local area and surrounding communities as well as those from neighboring counties and Arkansas have been invited to participate.
