Farmer City Raceway held the makeup race from the UMP Summernationals rainout on Friday night. This time without the points, but with all the action anyone could ask for. Fifty seven late models from seven states drew for time trials, with the current track champion Roger Long drawing the first spot, and turning in the fastest time of the night at 12.758.
The dash was won by Long over Shannon Babb, Billy Moyer, Brian Shirley, Rodney Melvin and Don O'Neal. The top three from each of five heats advanced to the feature event. The first heat went to Kevin Weaver at the checkers just nipping Jr Shickel and Steve Sheppard Jr in third. Second heat was another close heat with John Gill winning out over Eric Smith and Randy
Korte. Heat number three was a runaway with Matt Miller winning over Jeep VanWormer and Rohn Moon. Heat number four was an uneventful race with Matt Taylor winning over Corey Turner and Bret Sievert. The fifth and final heat was worth the price of admission alone, after a race long battle, Billy
Drake won by inches over Donnie Moran and Don Hammer. The final three spots went to the winners of the semi features, which were Chris Dick, Richie Hedrick and Jason Fegers.
With sixteen of the twenty four starters having previously won on this track, the forty lap, $10,000 to win feature proved to be a contest with a lot of experience. The race went green to checkers without incident. Shannon Babb jumped to the lead at the start and set a blistering pace with Moyer holding down the second spot the first half. By lap 23, O'Neal finally got around Moyer and set sail for Babb, who was caught up in heavy traffic. Lap after lap, O'Neal tried to pass Babb, and got it done as the white flag was displayed, but Babb ended up getting back around to beat O'Neal to the checkers and the $10,000 check waiting for him in victory lane.
