Haubstadt, IN - May 27. Brian Shaw won the UMP Open Wheel Modified feature Sunday night to close out the Special Memorial Weekend race program at Tri-State Speedway. The Robinson, IL, driver set a torrid pace after starting in the front row alongside fellow heat race winner Randle Sweeney. The two ran one-two for the 25 lap distance. Randle Sweeney gave it one final effort down low in the final turn but Shaw maintained his edge for the victory.

Tim Dierlam finished third and became a factor once he caught the lead pack of top feature qualifiers. Everett Bradham and Wes McClera ran fourth and fifth. Both won their respective heats and ran hard to stay in the top five. Clayton Miller was sixth ahead of Chris Moore, Chris Amick, Jared Bailey, and Steve Copeland.

Forty-seven modified race cars were on hand which rates as the largest field so far this season. Twenty drivers started the feature. Nearly half the starters were drivers making their first visit of the season. Rivalries developed quickly with five yellow flags giving testimony to the close racing. The initial start saw three drivers spin. The other incidents were single car spins and racing resumed quickly.
