GALENA, Mo. (March 11) – Any questions promoter Ken Essary had about the interest in his new Show-Me Racin’ Series have been answered by all the telephone calls he’s been fielding.

The first annual series for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models sports 15 races at tracks in Arkansas and Missouri, opening in April and running through mid-October.

“I just wanted to see some of the young guys get started racing Late Models,” said Essary, co-founder of the Midwest Late Model Racing Association a quarter-century ago. “There are a lot of young guns with talent in this area who need the opportunity to race and this series will allow them to do that without spending a lot of money.”

“The response has been extremely good,” he added. “We’re still getting calls and commitments from drivers, and we’ve had 15,000 hits in two weeks on our website.”

Essary aims to have a $25,000 point fund paid out to drivers competing in a minimum of 75 percent of the series events. Drivers will also receive national points for the 10 races held during I.M.C.A.’s Late Model season April 23 through Aug. 29; no series races are scheduled against sanctioned weekly events at Monett Speedway or Joplin 66 Speedway.

“I.M.C.A.’s spec engine rule gives everybody a chance,” said Essary. “The spec engine takes the money out of it. Drivers who work on their car and do their homework don’t have to spend a lot of money to win.”

Most of the 15 races will follow one of three purse formats topped by $1,250, $1,500 or $2,000 to win. Sixteen sponsors are already signed up to give cash and product awards.

In addition to Monett and Joplin, the series also travels to Wheatland Raceway, Bolivar Speedway, Springfield Raceway, Dallas County Speedway and Lebanon I-44 Speedway in Missouri, and to North Central Arkansas Speedway and Thunder Valley Speedway in Arkansas.

“I’d been thinking about a series like this for about a year,” said Essary, who began laying groundwork for the tour shortly after the 2003 race season ended. “This series will be good for drivers and it will be good for tracks. I think all these young drivers will put a lot of fans in the seats.”
