Mother Nature summoned all of her heat-wave fury Saturday night at Warrensburg’s own Central Missouri Speedway; however, she could not spoil the fun for drivers who came to compete or the hearty fans in the grandstands who came to watch their favorite drivers on the ‘Fastest High-Banked Clay Oval in the Midwest’ for Pepsi Race Night at the speedway. All together, there were 82 drivers on hand for the four race divisions and a total 17 races during the program, which started at 7:30 and ended at 9:50 p.m.
After winning his sixth main event of the year last week, Dustin Boney declared he was going to spend some time with the family and would not be competing this week. This meant the door was wide open for the outstanding field of modified drivers who made their way to the track for three qualifying heat races, a b-main, and the 20-lap featured event. During heat race action, Terry Schultz of Sedalia claimed the win in the opening race over Aaron Marrant of Richmond and Shad Badder. Heat two saw Jason Thompson take the win over Tyler Schmidt and Luke Feeback. The final heat went to Rick Beebe for his third win over Mark Dotson and David Barker of Kingsville. For the b-main event, it was Joey Lile taking the win over Jeremy Kelley and Joe Cobb. The modified field at CMS is truly second to none and just to make the a-main at CMS is truly an accomplishment. Sixteen cars transferred to the a-main from the heat races with another eight drivers coming out of the b-main to complete the field. Thompson and Schultz led the field to the drop of the green flag with Thompson quickly jumping out to the front with Schultz in tow. Aaron Marrant found his racing groove with a preferred slick track on the low side and fought his way to the third position with Beebe holding strong in fourth early on in the event. The first eighteen laps of the race were ran at a blistering pace with the top three pulling ever so slightly away from the fierce battle between Beebe, Mark Dotson and Shad Badder for fourth with Jamie Ragland also in the mix. With cars running up high, middle, and down low, the race soldiered on caution-free until Mark Dotson’s machine stalled on the backstretch to draw a yellow flag. On the re-start, another quick caution involving three cars once again realigned the field as the drivers settled back into their groove to finish on a two-lap sprint to the finish. Beebe had to unfortunately exit the race with a flat tire after contact late in the event bringing his strong run to an end. At the conclusion of the race, no one had anything for Thompson as he claimed feature win number two this year at CMS with Marrant running strong in the runner-up position. Schultz had his best CMS run of the year in third with Badder fourth, Ragland fifth, Schmidt sixth, Feeback seventh and twentieth-starting James McMillin in eighth.
The ULMA Late Model drivers kicked off their portion of the evening’s program with three heat races. Unfortunately, in heat number one, Dave Meyer’s night came to a grinding halt on the front straightaway, thankfully the Concordia driver was okay after he slammed the wall and was unable to continue. The opening heat race went to Lane Ehlert over Kevin Coyne and Joe Walkenhorst. In heat-race two, Brett Wood of Warrensburg picked up his third win of the year over brother-in-law Jason Bodenhamer and O’Fallon Missouri’s Shawn Rayfield. The third and final heat race had Jon Binning of Warrensburg picking up the win over ULMA point leader Bob Test and Steve Clancy. Lane Ehlert and Brett Wood led the strong field to the initial green flag with Wood quickly claiming the top spot. Bodenhamer swiftly moved into the second position with Kevin Coyne and Bob Test inside the top four. Lap-after-lap Bodee pressured his brother-in-law for the lead but ‘Woody’ was able to keep him at bay in a caution-free race for all twenty laps until late in the event. The drivers did a great job in keeping their cars in check with several battles throughout the field. Coyne’s strong run came to an end with mechanical woes just as Test advanced to the third spot with Jon Binning moving up to take fourth by lap thirteen. On lap fifteen Bodenhamer drove to the low side of Woods to claim the top spot and then was able to hold off his brother-in-law for his fifth feature win of the year. Wood recorded his strongest finish this year in second with Test having a fine run to third. Binning finished a respectable fourth at the line with Ehlert, Rayfield, Clancy, and Joe Walkenhorst rounding out the top eight.
A nice field of Street Stock drivers settled in for a full field in competition as the battle for the track championship continued. Current leader Chad Eickleberry of Warrensburg and Brian Johnson of Independence brought their battle to yet another Saturday night showdown at the bullring in the always exciting street stock division. Before the main event lineup could be determined, the drivers in attendance competed in three heat races with passing points determining their feature-event starting order. To open the night’s competition in the street stocks, it was Lone Jack Missouri driver Bryant Moyer claiming the win on his first night out this year over Bryce McMillin and Brian Eckhoff. Eickleberry claimed the win in heat two over Michael Mullins of Kingsville and Bobby Ruff of Independence. Dean Wille took over the wheel of the 49sr street stock machine and claimed his second heat race victory of the year; this victory was over Brian Johnson and Jerry Schmidt. The mini-points championship event had to be delayed a couple of weeks but that did not stop Brian Johnson from beating Chad Eickleberry to the line in the three-lap dash to take home the extra street stock cash. Bryant Moyer and Dean Wille claimed the front row for the main event as 19 cars took the green flag. Wille quickly shot out to the lead with Moyer in second. A quick caution for debris on the front stretch slowed the field and once the green flag flew again Wille quickly resumed his lead over the field. Two more cautions flew on the field early on just as the battle for second was really heating up between Johnson, Eickleberry, McMillin and Marc Carter. On lap seven the field also slowed for a spinning car with Wille still the leader with Johnson and Eickleberry in hot pursuit. The final restart after a late caution, gave Johnson and Eickleberry one last shot at glory but it was not to be as Wille claimed his first street stock feature win of the year at CMS over Johnson. Marc Carter made his way around Eickleberry late in the event to take third with Eickleberry fourth. Jerry Schmidt crossed the line fifth, McMillin sixth, Nate Barnes seventh, and Moyer with a nice run inside the top eight as the race concluded.
Brad Smith and B-mod racing seem to be synonymous with one another, especially over the course of the last couple of years. It seems that no matter what track the blue and white #99 shows up, he is likely to be the odds on favorite by the fans for the victory. Smith is the current point leader at CMS but do not let that fool you, the B-mod drivers at CMS are in a class of their own and the future of open-wheel modified racing is in good hands with these drivers. In B-mod heat-races, Smith wasted no time in returning to victory lane with a victory in heat one ahead of Jacob Ebert and Jeremy Lile of Higginsville. Heat race number two had troubles at the start but once things shook out it was Mark Evinger who claimed his first heat win of the year over Dalton Kirk and Ethan Isaacs of Bonner Springs, KS. The final heat went Nic Bennett with his third heat win of the year ahead of Bronson Combs, and Troy Carlyle of Liberty, MO. For the 15-lap feature, Evinger and Bennett started on the front row with Evinger grabbing the early lead to lead the first two laps. It did not take long however for multiple-time feature winner and current point leader Brad Smith to find his way to the front as he grabbed the lead on lap three. Behind Smith, a great battle was shaping up between Jacob Ebert and Dalton Kirk as they tried to settle the score for second spot for many laps through the main event. The drivers were in a great race rhythm as the first ten laps went caution free on the field. The lone caution flew just as lap eleven began when Bronson Combs spun around in turn two. With the field bunched up, Smith led the field on the restart with Ebert and Kirk close behind. As the laps clicked off, Smith pulled away and went on to take his fifth feature of the year and fourth in a row. It was also his twelfth win this season at various tracks and fifty-first career win. Ebert held on for a strong second place run with Kirk third at the line. Ethan Isaacs came away in fourth spot followed by Jeremy Lile, Mark Evinger, Troy Carlyle, and Jason Billups at the finish.
