CASA GRANDE, Ariz – (February 24, 2008) Saturday nights flag to flag victory gave Terry Phillips the outside front row for Sunday’s $8,000 to win Salute to the Veterans 100 finale. And just like the previous day, Phillips grabbed the lead on the opening lap and never looked back leading all 40 laps in his Andy’s Frozen Custard/Don Babb Motorsports/JFR Graphics/Hatfield Racing Engines/GRT by Phillips. Following the Springfield, MO driver under the checkers were teammates Jeremy Payne & Eric Tuner, closely followed by another set of teammates in the form of Jason Hughes and Tommy Weder, Jr. rounding out the top five.

On the green Phillips would grab the lead off of turn two while Payne took second from the pole, followed by Turner, Hughes, Kelly Shryock, Weder, Zack Vanderbeek, Bryan Ayres and RC Whitwell. Shryock and Hughes would go side by side for fourth from laps two until lap five when Hughes would secure the position on the top side.

Weder would move Shryock back to sixth on lap six and would immediately be challenged for that spot by Zack Vanderbeek and a charging RC Whitwell. The trio would go three wide on lap nine before Shryock would settle in sixth, Whitwell in seventh and Vanderbeek in eighth on lap 14.

Phillips continued to pull away from Payne 15 laps in followed by Turner, Hughes, Weder, Shryock, Whitwell, Vanderbeek, Jason Krohn and Johnny Scott rounding out the top 10.

The track began to take rubber in the middle and high groves on lap 16 as Phillips approached the back of the field one lap later, enjoying a ½ straightaway lead.

The top 10 remained unchanged ½ way to the finish as Phillips continued behind slower traffic, allowing the other drivers in the top five to close in on Phillips deck. Pulling the train around Central Arizona Raceway, Phillips continued out front as the top five ran close enough to be covered by a blanket.

Past laps 25 and 30, the second through fifth place drivers searched for a way past the races only leader as they hummed along in the narrow racing grove. Phillips, Payne and Tuner would separate themselves from Hughes and Weder by clearing the lapped car of Jeremy Newberry while the Boom Drilling teammates struggled to find a way past.

No one had anything for Phillips as the race ran caution free to the finish. It was Phillips second win in as many nights, but his first since his January 2007 Wild West Shootout Late Model victories.

During and before Sunday’s events, drivers passed through the stands collecting donations for injured driver Kellen Chadwick. $2,927 in monetary contributions including donations from drivers Jeremy Newberry who donated 100% of his winnings, and the 10% each donated by Tommy Weder, Jr. and Kelly Shryock.
